Jailhouse Rock - movie DVD cover picture
In Jailhouse Rock Elvis was everything rockabilly's about;

living fast, dying young, and leaving a good-looking corpse. That is the opening line from 'True Romance,' and I couldn't have put it any better myself. Elvis' best movie and one of the best ever. If you ever wondered why Elvis was so big, watch this movie. He defines cool. I went on an Elvis kick and watched a bunch of them. When I got to this one, I couldn't believe how good it was. It's not cheesy happy-go-lucky like most Elvis movies. It's got heart. The music is great and Elvis' performance combines Michael Jackson's dance moves with James Dean's attitude, only he did it first. He's a rebel who plays by his own rules. This is one of the most underrated movies ever. It's never mentioned when the best movies are discussed, but it definitely should be. If you miss when rock was still rock, you'll love this movie.

Star Wars returns: And man, what a ride

First off, way to go george. This is simply the most eagerly awaited event in the history of film making. There will never be another Star Wars and this saga deserves its place as the foremost example of american culture there is. These films should go into a time capsule and be burried for 1000 years as our decendants will undoubetly want to relieve this fun fantasy.
This episode does well to capture the feeling and grandeur of the originals in such a way as to suggest that merely months have gone by since "A new hope" was on the big screen for the first time. The story is captivating, and the characters are interesting, yes, even Jar Jar. Although I too did not really appreciate him until I read the book.
My only complaint, it went too fast, both in story telling speed and time. 2 hours was hardly enough to satisfy this die hard SW fan who has been waiting for 17 years to see how it all started. And the story telling, while true to Lucas' passion for speed, went too quickly from one scene to another. IMHO
All in all, a masterful return to the saga that holds such a special place in our hearts. Bravo.
PS. Its a shoo in for the Oscar in all the same categories that Star Wars won for.

This Is A Great Movie

I wrote a review for the V.H.S. edition of this film, a few years ago, but it is gone now, because it is no longer available on V.H.S., and Amazon has completely removed it from their database. I saw this movie when it came out 21 years ago (1983). I've always liked it a lot. The scientist that created the android, gets very attached to it, throughout this movie, because he and his wife were never able to have children of their own, so the human looking android, is like a "Son" figure for the scientist. I like that aspect of this film. The ending is sad, but Michael (the android), did the right thing. The government would have used him for the wrong reasons. Watch this movie, and I think that you will like it.

Gilligan!!!!!!!!!

The second season of CBS's sitcom Gilligan's Island premiered in the fall of 1965 in glorious Technicolor. So,those who saw GI in 1964-65 could only guess the colors of the clothes worn by the cast. Cable television's TNT(Turner Network Television) began to air colorized versions in the 1990's of the GI episodes from the first season. The Professor(Russell Johnson) and Mary Ann(Dawn Wells) are mentioned in the slightly revised new version of the theme song. Not only that,Johnson and Wells appear in name and face. So,there's no more "all the rest".

Fantastic, but not the Miramax version

Great film for reasons that have been stated numerous times over. However, the film , especially the Miramax version, which is the version you'll be getting when you're buying this film, is very propagandistic, given the China-Tawain situation. A thing to note about the Miramax release...the subtitles were done very poorly, and the MOST CRUCIAL translation of "All Under Heaven" was instead translated to "Our Land"...big difference...the film did very poorly because of this in North America...and to the reviewer who said that the Chinese should quit the invisible ropes act...you must be american. This was a GENRE film and the conventions of "swordsman" films includes the "weightless" acrobatics you see. It's what makes the genre the genre and Chinese "swordsman" films what they are. If different cultures were to quit what they do just to be accepted more in the west, this world would be a boring place. BTW, the x-men, superman, and batman are very down to earth.

Black Hawk Down - movie DVD cover picture
Bravery and humanity

Wow. What a powerful movie. While it soft-pedaled the political failures of the situation, it certainly did not back off from portraying the valor of the men involved. This movie was moving in its portrayal of the Rangers and Delta Force troops that participated in the Somalia adventure. They were sadly forced into a situation that will mark their lives forever, and hopefully we will never forget their sacrifice. This should be viewed as a memorial to those fine men. There is no way for me, or any of us, to thank them. But, that's not why they did it. They are true patriots and this movie honors them.

Unflinching Horror

This movie is violent, entertaining, well shot, and it has a strong cast of characters. Rob Zombie is great at staging a scene and his screenplay, while lacking originality of concept, makes up for it in execution. Features a strong cast of genre character actors including Bill Mosely (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Sid Haig (Spider Baby), and Karen Black (Trilogy of Terror). It also includes the ultra hot Sheri Moon (appeared in many of Rob Zombie's music videos).

Mobile Suit Gundam The 08th MS Team (Vol. 1) - movie DVD cover picture
Proof that Gundam makes your grandma scream for mercy.

If you think Gundam Wing is a good series, then prepare to be blown away. Not only does every episode contain some serious action...but it also looks fantastic. This series was originally released in Japan as an OVA (Original Video Animation) which means it was released straight to video -read as: Higher budget/ better animation. This series is actually a side-story to the main Gundam Universal Century series, kind of like the "elsewhere..." of comic books. Unlike Gundam Wing, the 8th MS Team characters work together and help each other out in times of need, which creates some very likeable heroes. The animation itself is superb -done by Sunrise/Bandai (of Cowboy Bebop and Outlaw Star fame) and receives a fantastic transfer to DVD. The extra's include both English and Japanese language tracks and some extra footage -with an easy to navigate menu system. While this series is coming to Toonami, I highly recommend this DVD regardless. You'll see and hear a lot of stuff on the DVD that didn't make it past the Cartoon Network sensors -that, and the increased picture quality make this disc a must for Gundam fans.
NOTE: Although not stated, this disc is Playstation 2 compatible -Booyah!

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure - movie DVD cover picture
Dudes, you gotta see this savory movie!

This movie is, well, interesting. Bill and Ted are two kids who have a dream of starting their own band, but they don't have good instruments and they can't play. They have to pass this history presentation or the flunk and Ted has to go to Military camp. They get help from a gu from the future and go back in time and grab several characters from history for their project. The storyline is one of the worst. The way the two guys talk, we'll just say the should back off of the narcotics. ...
