Important, Impressive, Inspiring!!!!!!!!!!!

I definitely remember seeing this movie as a youngster, well before I had come out to friends and family, and it left an indelible impression on me and actually provided me with survival tools, all people, regardless of their differences would invariably need to effectively deal with societal intolerance. The performances are spellbinding, most notably, Audrey Hepburn and Shirley McClaine. It was indeed ahead of its time and quite frankly I am surprised it has not been re-done. But on second thought, regardless of cast, there would be very little that a remake could lend. This would be a classic example of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." This version does exactly what it was intended to do: open up a dialogue. It is uncomprimising and tastefully done with wrenching performances and is just as timely today as when it was first produced. I heartily recommend it as a thought-provoking and important film.

A beautiful though dramatic story.....

Utu. The story of a proud warrior who returns to his tribe, to find them slaughtered by the British. Te Veki then sets out on what people now would call a Jihad. The conclusion left me allmost crying, for the only one who really has the right to execute Te Veki is his brother..... talking 'bout right-by-birth? This movie left me feeling ashamed for being a white man.

Fox and His Friends - movie DVD cover picture
"Everyone's to be had..." (Fox)

Fassbinder himself exudes a natural impish charm as the streetwise ex-carny Franz Biberkopf, who loses his gig as "Fox the Speaking Head" when his carnival barker boyfriend is arrested for tax evasion as Fox and Friends opens. Down and out, and unable to borrow a few marks from his perpetually inebriated sister, he gets into the significantly older Max's car for a quick trick. Before getting down to business, Fox manages to scam the local florist for enough cash to buy that last prayer for the hopeless, a lottery ticket.

But wait, old girl, it just so happens that Fox has purchased the winning ticket...

Max (Karl-Heinz Bohm) cuts a truly Mephistophelean character as an antiques dealer who seems less interested in sex than in watching the predictable machinations of human nature with a jaded eye and a knowing smirk. After befriending the ill-mannered, working class Fox, Max throws him to his snobbish, affected, status-obsessed "friends" - after letting it slip that Fox has recently come into quite a bit of money. Fox puts the moves on Eugen, who he describes to his bar buddies as "posh and a little prissy". Fox soon finds that while his "natural intelligence" gets him through the day in his usual social sphere, he is outclassed among his new friends. Seeing an opportunity to save the family business, Eugen begins to "assist" the fish-out-of-water Fox in spending his newfound wealth.

Fox's old drinking buddies at the grungy neighborhood homo watering hole speak for the audience, warning Fox to save his money and stick to what he knows. And Max, though certainly the instigator behind Fox's growing troubles - seems to half heartedly hope that Fox turns things around and comes through as a street-smart underdog.

While Fox and Friends is based on a culture-clash clich?, watching it played out amongst homosexuals in 1975 Berlin was a pleasure. There's a scrappy realness to the lower class characters, and a comical superficiality and pretension to the upper-middle class characters - who seem to be "positively aghast" at the smallest infraction of etiquette. Further, homosexuality never becomes the central issue. The film stays true to the core theme of class disparity. However, both the speed at which the story develops and the legal instability of Fox's connection to his prissy partner do seem to comment on homosexual relationships.

Fox and Friends is far more natural and less stylized than Fassbinder's Querelle, however, there are strange, surreal moments when artificial theatricality prevails over the realistic, straightforward filmmaking that makes the rest of the film believable. Whereas Querelle feels like an erotic dream, Fox and Friends is grounded in the real. Some might find the oddball touches and vignettes out of place, but they also give the film a certain sparkle and symbolism that make it special.

One of the best!

I watched the video 3 times in a row. The movie felt so right to me the 1st time, but the 2nd and 3rd viewings revealed the seamlessly woven visual, musical and plot threads that, taken together, caused me to conclude that the only way a film could be this good was if it was crafted with love and integrity. Realistic, touching portrayal of the vicissitudes of life in the relationship arena, with a nod in the direction of the almost mystical impact of destiny. Usually when a reviewer says a movive is a feel-good movie, it suggests a certain superficiality or lightness that makes is hard to take such a movie seriously, or you feel insulted by the movie because it is so formulaic and predictable. At the end of this movie you feel good because the male and female leads arrive at their happiness by having the guts to keep on living their lives in the face of all the hurts and disappointments of life, and the general insanity of urban life in particular. Just by having the perseverance to keep on getting up each day and doing their lives, eventually the sun breaks through and they discover each other. The music was great, the portrayal of the Boston setting was accurate, superb, and the acting was, across the board, convincing and just-right in emotional tone. Hope Davis was great, as was her Brazilian suitor. See it. You'll like it.

Waiting for Guffman - movie DVD cover picture
A Must-See! Hilarious and Wonderfully Entertaining!

A wonderfully hilarious and heartfelt mockumentary by Christopher Guest and Eugene Levy who recently wrote the hit movie "Best in Show." This ingenious film tells the story of Corky St. Clair(Guest, who is also the director), a New York actor/director living in the small Missouri town, Blaine. He has written a new musical entitled "Red, White, and Blaine" to celebrate the town's 150th anniversary. Next, he must find the perfect cast. Enter Fred Willard, Catherine O'Hara, Parker Posey, Lewis Arquette, and of course Eugene Levy, who create some of the funniest theatrical characters since Mel Brooks' The Producers! Corky has sent a letter to some New York producers, and one has agreed to fly down to Blaine and see the show, Mort Guffman. The cast becomes extremely excited as they gear up for the possibility of a future on Broadway. Through superbly acted situations and comedic timing and poise, the rehearsel's finally culminate to the movies best scene. The opening night of "Red, White, and Blaine." I could not stop laughing at the cameos, the well-crafted characters, and the overall joy that was rampant throughout this great little movie. Anyone who enjoys theatre or just wants to see a great movie nust see this one!

Wonderful DVD, but be warned!

We all know that Man on the Moon was one of the best movies of 1999. Finally, a biography that does not force you or beg you to understand and fall in love with the hero. So I'd only like to warn you that - although the movie itself on the DVD has wonderful picture and sound (DTS for an all talk movie!) - you will find no documentary about Andy Kaufman on the DVD although the Amazon description says so. But still, this is the one to have.

Uncovered - The Whole Truth About the Iraq War - movie DVD cover picture
Biased? Perhaps. Propoganda? Hardly.

In all fairness this is a biased piece. I would hope the producers will admit as much. Then again, it does show the other side. It is hard to show the other side is wrong without first showing what it is you are purporting is wrong. But, do you see it airing on the so called liberal media? Not to my knowledge. On the other hand, Fox is biased and it is running 24 hours a day! I have an acquaintance who is a World War II veteran and Fox is all the news he watches. I respect this person. We agree on a lot of things, but he has been misled by Fox. This person actually stated that a vote for Kerry would result in another war! Not to say that that might not be true , but, he was ignoring the fact that we are currently in a war started by Bush and that that was apparently irrelevant. I was, needless to say, purplexed by his statement.

I have read some of the critical reviews of this documentary. There are claims that this documentary is "Complete Garbage. . . The only mastery is the editing to take info out of context", (yet no examples are given putting it in context); "Almost completely untrue. . . .Try READING about the war and get some real analysis.", "Liberal propoganda"; "Missing a few things. . .Where is the footage of Saddam gassing the Kurds", ("Liberal non-sense", "Propaganda. . .Use some common sense and don't waste your money!, (common sense? Is this the 51% sense?); "If you like lies and distorted truths you'll like this!" ; "Their "truth" has a hole in it",[...]So, I say, "Prove it!". Show me where Uncovered is debunked. You cannot, because it is all true. I have not seen or read anything out there that shows Uncovered putting out lies, exception being the above critical reviews, which do not detail any lie in this documentary. If there is something out there that debunks Uncovered, please let me know . I will be glad to see something that shows the WMD stockpiles we found or the ability for Iraq to strike the US, etc. And I don't mean something that says it is all good because we got [...]
