Immensely entertaining action hokum

It is admitted that Steven Seagal, as an actor, is not of the "method" school of Brando and De Niro. You don't watch his films to see him act. If you want to see acting, then watch the powerhouses Humphrey Bogart or Jack Nicholson, but not Seagal, the seventh dan black belt aikidoist. His films are primarily made to thrill and entertain. With his erect posture, powerful build and frowning expression, he exerts an intimidating screen presence. Like a tornado sweeping across the torrid zone, he leaves the bad guys annihilated and in brief, hard-trimmed action scenes, he despatches villain after villain with either a bullet to the head, a chop to the throat, a thrust with a knife or a kick to the face. In this film at least, he also manages to be mildly humorous and even self-deprecating in his portrayal of a bead-wearing Buddhist cop. This is the first film in which he actually draws blood during a conflict with a bad guy. The action scenes are supreme. The dialogue is post-Tarantino tart and the film, as a whole, is wonderfully self-mocking.

Alien 3 - movie DVD cover picture
Its Started!

very much maligned upon its release, alien 3 is seen as the weaker of the 4 films by many fans of this franchise. i myself am a fan of this movie and purchased it on dvd today [i write this review after watching it!]. i managed to pick this dvd up at a bargain price from a video rental outlet.
why this film was hated so much by critics and fans alike i will not know. each alien movie is unique in its own way and alien 3 is a total sidestep away from camerons classic aliens. many people expected the 'bang' 'bang' 'boom' 'boom' of its predecessor but instead david fincher decided to create his own vision using the same formula as the first alien movie.
commendable performances from the cast [charles dutton, ralph brown and brian glover] all compliment weavers performance excellently. like the first two movies there are some strong characters that we can identify and sympathise with. the script itself has some plot holes but that aside the film is a visual masterpiece with some breathtaking set designs which were way ahead of 1991 standards. easily the grimmest of the alien movies, fincher gave this movie a rather nihilistic undertone and it works great with the story.
the dvd transfer is very good, clear picture and the sound is also good with a few tweaks here and there over the vhs version. my only complaint was that this dvd has no real special features. we get a 25 minute 'making of' doc which is more like an overview to the making of the movie, there is no real depth. we get all 4 trailers to the alien movies. strange because alien3 had 3 trailers if i can remember...the one seen at the end of the documentary, the 'on earth we can hear you scream' trailer and the missing 'when the sun burns cold' directors commentary which disappointed me. there were no tv spots either which was a shame.
i'm giving 5 stars to the movie...but on the features front i don't think it deserves any. alien and aliens had far better features and documentaries.

Beautiful Remake of a Classic!

It is a wonderful remake of an old classic story. It's different, the "true" version of the fairytale, with one horrible stepmother and one horrible stepsister, along with one nice stepsister. Leonardo DiVincci replaces the Fairy Godmother, and Drew Barrymore plays Cinderella AKA Danielle.
It is lovely and romantic. Something for the whole family.

Being a Navy brat most of my life, I had a chance to see this ship with my own eyes. Very impressive. It was sitting in the habor at Gitmo Cuba, when we were stationed there. My father, who is retired now, absoultly loves this movie. When we were kids we ended up watching most movies dealing with the Navy. This one was very good. I have this movie on vhs, but want to give my dad one on dvd. My three children even enjoyed this movie it helps some what with them understanding about PearlHabor. Please release this soon Thank you!

The main objective of this movie is to show the importance of teaching students, no matter what it takes. Mr. Jackson is a die-hard teacher, having been stabbed several times by a student in his class that he failed. Still, he did not give up. He went on to substitute in one of the toughest schools in L.A. He stuck it out to the end. However, his character should have gone on at least until the end of school. All in all, this was a truly good movie.

Best movie I have seen yet!

This film is dark, intense and focussed. Only film to have a shot at romantic/action/horror/comedy (sort of) combo. It is well worth a look (unless you were a big wrap for driving miss daisy - you might prefer city of angels - which i gave a wide steer waiting for nic cage to come back. snake eyes should do the trick.

Vertigo (Collector's Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
The Highpoint of Hitchcock's Career

Whereas classics such as North By Northwest, Rear Window and Strangers on a Train established Hitchcock as an ingenious, masterful director, it was with the release of Vertigo that he truly pushed his talents to a new extreme both in storytelling and visceral, directorial impact. One of his longest movies, it manages to slowly unravel into a deliberately disturbing, creepy film whose ending never could have been guessed from the beginning. Various elements of unique directing are put to good use here, including the infamous track-out/zoom-in camera technique, and many scenes of wordless montague that create palpable suspense and intrigue.

Like every good Hitchcock movie, there is always a sense of the unknown in Vertigo, even as revelation upon eerie revelation is thrown at the viewer. There is scarcely a point where we think we have everything figured out, due in large part to the appropriately dizzying score by Bernard Herrmann. Herrmann, famous for his many stellar film scores, including Taxi Driver, and Cape Fear, and several of Hitchcock's other movies, manages to perfectly match the film's atmosphere of deception and whirling, gloomy and sinister mystery. It is a great gift that Herrmann has given this film by pronouncing its atmosphere with his artful score.

If I were to recommend one Hitchcock work to moviewatchers, Vertigo would be the one. Because of its expertly spun plot, filled with unsettling motifs and unusual themes, and its style of filming and directing that put to good use many signature Hitchcock techniques, there are few true movielovers who will not enjoy this film. Highly recommended, and a continuously absorbing creation, despite its age.
