Imaginative Approach to a Classic Story

This movie is surprisingly faithful to the Robert Louis Stevenson classic; surprising because the movie takes place in outer space on multiple planets. Because of the combination of anachronistic elements with interplanetary space travel, extremely high technology and space aliens, this movie comes across as fantasy versus science fiction. The laser rifles look like flintlocks and the spaceship appears to be a sailing ship, complete with a ragtag crew right out of the original story, to name but a couple of examples.
Young Jim Hawkins rides a rocket-powered skateboard in feats that would turn the hair of anyone over the age of 30 gray instantly, which means that Jim's exploits are a sure hit for younger audiences. As in the original, Jim is threatened by a variety of characters and situations and comes through each of them by a combination of luck, daring, and an affinity for Long John Silver as a father-figure. Jim provides the center point for much of the action in this movie.
The story itself is the same as the original. Jim Hawkins comes into possession of a treasure map, and he and other compatriots set course to find and retrieve the treasure. Long John Silver has discovered what they plan to do and has gotten his men hired on to man the ship. During the voyage Silver and his men take over the ship, and Jim Hawkins, the Captain and Doctor Doppler (comic relief, think Goofy as a professor) escape to Treasure Planet. From this point forward the adventure is the encounters with the pirates, locating the treasure, and escaping back to home.
There are several points worthy of note. The captain (Captain Amelia) is outstandingly animated and a unique combination of gymnast and intellectual, coolly commanding in all situations. One of the best Disney-created characters ever; this DVD is worth having just to watch Captain Amelia. Long John Silver is a cyborg. Better to see Silver than any description I could provide. The third point is that John Rzenik of the Goo Goo Dolls provided a song for the movie, in addition to James Newton Howard's score. The fourth point is the incredible CGI backgrounds; these backgrounds bring an incredible depth and quality to the movie.
For fans of Disney's action movies, this movie is a must-have. The story moves along briskly, and follows the original well. The setting for the story is unique and well done, yielding a new Disney classic. While the PG rating due to violence means that the movie is unsuitable for the very youngest members of the family, children over the age of five or six should find this movie a rousing adventure. Five stars for this family movie.

X2 is awesome

Mutants both evil and good find themselves on the run when the evil General Stryker (Bryan Cox) devises a plan to rid Earth of their kind. The plot, such as it is, exists mostly as a framing device for a succession of spectacular scenes in which the mutants from the first film, along with some new ones, engage in a series of battles, pursuits, and narrow escapes. Director Bryan Singer and the screenwriters pack in as many mutants as possible and pepper the film with brief, efficient, effective character moments. The result is less a cohesive story than a game of "Spot That Mutant," but it is very entertaining nevertheless. It was fun to see Nightcrawler (Alan Cumming) as such a prominent character; he was my favorite X-Man when I was a kid. Colossus makes a brief but tantalizing appearance as well; hopefully, we'll see more of him in the next film. If you're looking for a noisy, action-packed good time, this is the film for you.

Best Television Movie I've Ever Seen

Never before has a television movie moved me more than this one. The calabor of this production is excellent and the acting superbly strong and powerful by all invloved. Leelee Sobieski as Joan is simply outstanding, her performance is the backbone of the production. Her conviction in her portrayal of Joan was so moving, I found myself in tears at the end. I recommend this movie to everyone, young or old. Joan's faith and courage will touch you all, guaranteed.

The Talented Mr. Ripley - movie DVD cover picture
First half of the movie: Jude Law, 2nd: Matt Damon

Southern Italy, the 50s. Nerdy Tom Ripley is hired to bring the gorgeous playboy Dickie Greenleaf home to America. Tom and Dickie live off Dickie's father's paycheck, and live a life Tom has never dreamed of. Then Dickie says that this cant go on forever. And Tom will do anything to keep it.The performances or the best part of this movie. Matt Damon is effective as nerdy, pale, Tom Ripley. He takes an Oscar-worthy turn halfway when he turns into a creepy killer. Gwyneth Paltrow is also Oscar-worthy as Dickie's girlfriend, but she is best in the 2nd half when she becomes suspicious of Tom. Cate Blanchett has a small role as an aquaintance of Tom's, and she is flawless as usual. But the best of them all is two-time Academy Award nominee Jude Law as Dickie Greenleaf. His obsessions move so quickly, and Law is right on the money. He pulls off being a jerk really well, and introduces depth around the character so well. He doesn't just say the lines and follow the expressions from the director, he becomes the character and he never falters. The fun only increases in the second half, but i wont give it away!Grade: A

Good anime for grown-ups

Well, isn't most anime for grown-ups anyway? There's some children ones too I guess. For every Tenchi and Pokemon and Ranma 1/2 there's Evangelion, Hellsing, Vampire Hunter D and Akira. Yet for some reason, people always think that animated means children based. Well this is one film you should show people that have that mindset, it's gory, it's violent, and yet it's entertaining.

Jubei is basically a wanderer, a mercenary ninja taking odd jobs for money. Kagero and fellow Kogi clan members investigate people caught in what looked like a viral outbreak. While investigating, they find Tessai, a strange guy who can turn his body to stone and throws a heavy blade, in what results in probably the most goriest scene in the film. He captures Kagero and tries to make love to her(really bad at that too by the way), enter Jubei who rescues her.

She takes off and he encounters an old man whose name escapes me oddly enough. He tells him to take a mission which Jubei refuses until he's poisoned by him so he reluctanctly takes it. There, Jubei finds there's a plot to get rid of the Tokugawa Shogunate(the political party in control of Japan at the time) and ascend themselves to power.

Not only that, Jubei finds the 8 Demons of Gimon: 8 people with incredibly bizarre abilities. It reminded me of the Metal Gear games recently with enemies and bizarre abilities. In the film, you'll find a woman with control over snakes, a ninja who can disappear into shadow, a blind man with incredible hearing, a man with a hive in his back and the leader, who is capable of reincarnation and regenerating his limbs.

The gore is quite violent with ripped off arms, a man torn into 2, other men ripped in half and one's head sliding down his own blade. There is nudity also, one woman has a habit of being nude quite a bit, while there's an attempted rape in the beginning and something that looks like anal sex(or just entering from the back, who knows).

This film is definately not for the little kiddies but for the adults? They just might enjoy themselves.

Dial M for Murder - movie DVD cover picture
A Hitchcock thriller with first rate cast and good plot

"Dial M For Murder" is one of Hitchcock's lesser known movies from the fifties. It was taken from Frederick Knott's successful stage play and he also wrote the screenplay. The film had a strong cast which included Ray Milland, Robert Cummings, and, in her first film for Hitchcock, Grace Kelly. The supporting cast included John Williams and Anthony Dawson. The film was made in 3-D but never released in this form here in the U.K.
Tony Wendice (Ray Milland) is aware that his wife Margot (Grace Kelly) is having an affair with Mark Halliday (Robert Cummings). Margot is hoping for a divorce but her husband has other plans - Tony is alarmed about the thought of having to live without his wife's money so he decides to have her murdered. By chance he runs into an old college acquaintance called C. A. Swann (Anthony Dawson) who is known to have a criminal past and has in fact been in prison. Tony decides that Swann would be the ideal man to do the murder as he has no connection with Margot and offers him ?1,000 to do the deed. Swann is reluctant at first so Tony has to resort to blackmail threatening Swann with exposure of some of his past criminal activities to persuade him to become involved. On the night of the planned murder Tony is dining out at a restaurant with Mark and some others (which is to be his alibi). He has left a key under the stair carpet for Swann to enter the apartment and at 11.0 p.m. Tony will phone Margot from the restaurant - Swann will be hiding behind the curtains and when Margot answers the phone he will strangle her from behind. The perfect crime - or is it? Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances things don't quite work out as planned and there are many twists and turns before the police inspector (John Williams) has got it all figured out.
Some favourite lines from the film:
Robert Cummings (to Grace Kelly): "I can see this is going to be a rough evening. All of us saying nice things to each other".
Ray Milland (to Anthony Dawson): "I thought of three different ways of killing him. I even thought of killing her - and that seemed a far more sensible idea".
Kelly (to Cummings): "Do you really believe in the perfect murder?".
John Williams (to Cummings): "They talk about flat footed policemen. May the saints preserve us from the gifted amateur".
Hitchcock's cameo appearance in this film is a little different as he doesn't actually appear "in person". He is seen in the school reunion dinner photograph that Ray Milland shows to Anthony Dawson early in the film. Robert Cummings had starred in a previous Hitchcock film called "Saboteur" (1942). Grace Kelly went on to make two more films for Hitchcock - "Rear Window" and "To Catch a Thief" (both in 1954). Talented character actor John Williams was also in Hitchcock's "To Catch a Thief". "Dial M For Murder" was remade in 1998 as "A Perfect Murder" with Michael Douglas, Gwyneth Paltrow and Viggo Mortensen (the last named was also in the remake of "Psycho"). Another of Frederick Knott's plays made into a film was the excellent thriller "Wait Until Dark" starring Audrey Hepburn.

...adjust your rabbit ears...

o.k....so, the quality isn't great, and, unless you are a fan of advertising, you probably shouldn't be watching this in the first place...but to all those complaining about sound and picture quality, grow up...you've been so spoiled by all the latest effects and production values, that you think 'star wars' looks antiquaited...but yes, there was a time when these commercials looked great, and sold products...3 channels on the philco...that's all we had, that's all we needed...and we thought it was cool...so put away your xbox, and put your mindframe back to the days of an icebox...

A Very Warm and Highly Entertaining "Monsters" Delight...

MONSTERS INC. is a thoroughly enjoyable and highly delightful movie about the world of monsters. You will laugh and you will "awww" when you watch this movie. It's a great cinematic picture from Disney/Pixar, and the animation is breathtaking.
The premise is cute: in the world of Monstropolis, the inhabitants are all monsters whose job everyday is to scare all the world's children to power their city, which is quite charming. We focus in on two particular monsters: Sully (voiced by John Goodman) and his pal Mike (voiced by Billy Crystal). Sully is trying to maintain his status as the #1 scarer of all in Monstropolis. But when a young sweet little girl crawls her way through her door into the world of Monstropolis, it's up to Mikey and Sully to get her back before everyone sees her and causes widespread panic, as humans are thought of as "toxic" in the world of Monstropolis.
You will love this charming tale, which will make a wonderful holiday movie, or if you're just in the mood for laughs and maybe even funny scares, you will surely love MONSTERS, INC. A highly delightful and very entertaining animated film indeed!
