I'm a believer

Hi, I have not seen nor purchased this DVD but after reading some of these reviews had to comment--the ORIGINAL theatrical release had the Four Tops "The Same Old Song" during the "cleanup" scene and the ending credits. The Four Tops song, not the Neil Diamond song (or Monkees or whoever) is the ORIGINAL. I don't know what happened, but I vividly remember the first time I saw the film in the theater (Same Old Song) and then when I saw it again (I'm a Believer) I was extremely shocked and disappointed at the replaced music--It doesn't even fit with the storyline, that the bartender guy would insist on playing a Neil Diamond song--the Same Old Song fits better with his character and with them movie. I have never enjoyed the movie as much after they changed the music and am very pleased that they decided to go with the original song for the Director's Cut.

Red Sox Nation Enters The Promised Land!!

As a long time Red Sox fan, I urge all fellow Nation members to get this DVD!! It is a tremendously well-made account of the Magic Carpet Ride the Sox took last October. Parts of it will make you laugh, make you angry and even make you cry. I do wish a little more was done about the ALCS comeback, but that takes nothing away from the video. (I must admit I am a little prejudiced about the DVD because I make a cameo appearance at the end of it, with other NYC Red Sox fans!)
The DVD is worth every cent!!

Cute, Sweet, and Light!!

This is my all time favorite movie. Many people feel that the ideals of this movie are superficial and materialistic. BINGO!! Thats it, so its not Shakespeare, its not supposed to be. It is funny, and light hearted, and a movie I can watch a zillion times and still laugh about.

Once Upon a Time In the West

ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST is a strong contender for greatest western ever. Fans of the genre would be hard pressed to name any more than a handful of greater movies. I can't add much to the positive reviews but an amen or two. I haven't read anyone's comments on the "extras" in the last ten pages or so. A number of people contribute to the commentary track. They include John Carpenter, Sir Christopher Frayling, John Milius and some others. I usually enjoy running the commentary track after having watched the movie, and this one is a little more informative than most. There are three documentaries on disk two. They include interviews with Fraying, Milius, Carpenter, actors Claudia Cardinale and Gabriele Ferzetti, Bernardo Bertolucci and a few others. They also include clips from interviews with Henry Fonda and Sergio Leone. An Opera of Violence (30 min.) is more or less a brief biography of OUATITW director Sergio Leone. Nugget: Alan Cox relays the rumor that Clint Eastwood, Eli Wallach and Lee van Cleef were approached to play the parts of the three killers in the opening scene. Wages of Sin (20 min.) more particularly about the filming of the movie. Nugget: Leftover woods from Orson Welles' monumentally unfinished Falstaff movie, Chimes of Midnight, were used to build the railroad station and the Sweetwater mansion. Something to Do with Death (20 min.) talks a lot about the sound of the movie. The term "amplified reality" is thrown around a few times. Nuggets: The score was written before the movie was shot and the script for the three plus hour movie was only fifteen pages long. Locations Now and Then - A five-minute slide show of stills of location shots from the movies compared to new pictures of the same locations. Production Gallery - Another five-minute slide show of stills. Most are taken from the finished film, but there are some shots of the actors getting made up and suchlike. Cast Profile - Typical profile of the five lead actors. Does not include a detailed filmography. Original trailer

The Great Wide West.

The first movie in my experience that I wasn't allowed to not like. Kevin Costner is incredibly vacuous in this tedious western epic. Yes it is visually stunning, yes the score is beautiful,(except the ridiculous electronic dance sequence). This movie has a message though and it is perfectly willing to hit you over the head with it. White people are sweaty, wear dirty clothes, are immoral, incontinent, foul mouthed. Indians, at least the Sioux Indians are clean, laundered, chaste, pure of heart and speech. There are bad Indians but they are not Sioux, they are Nazi's with feathers and loin cloths. When a white man decides to convert to an Indian, he gets to have his hair blow dried and all his dirty clothes laundered, he gets to have a serene attitude, he gets to have a fetching young white woman who is also spotlessly clean because she has turned Indian too. When we are all clean and pure we get new names. The whole thing is so manipulative and transparently racist I don't understand why so many people fell for it. Buy the soundtrack and try to put these images out of your mind.

As another reviewer stated: we all have the right to our opinions, and art IS subjective. I'm not going to try to refute that, but I must throw my opinion of this movie into the mix. My friend and I both watched this movie for the second time and agreed that it only gets better after multiple viewings.
The tale that Andersen weaves has so many different dimensions - the complex themes and character development take time to fully comprehend. True, most of the characters in this film are dysfunctional, and the language is terrible (and this does disturb people, like my mother. I love her dearly and respect her opinion, but she hated American Beauty because it was too dysfunctional), but these negative qualities have their purpose. I walked away from the movie with the message that - yes, these things do happen. And yes, people are like this - disturbed, troubled, confused, and not entirely likable all the time. But real question is this: "How do we deal with it - with life? How much can we forgive?" I don't know the answer to that question. True art makes you think a bit and helps you see the beauty in even the rough parts of life.
About the aesthetic appeal of the movie - the camera style was choppy, but for me this only contributed to the urgency of the film. The fast pace made me question what was going on and what was going to happen next. And the three hours just flew right by. Additionally, the shots of Julianne Moore in the car (looking like death itself) and Stanley looking out the window as frogs pour down outside struck me as particularly beautiful. They could hang on a wall in an art gallery. Aimee Mann's soundtrack played an integral role and helped create a definite mood. Basically, nothing was superfluous - everything contributed to the overall artistic vision and meaning of the film.
I could go off for ages about how much I love this movie and this director, but I've rambled long enough. Go watch it yourself; nobody else can make up your mind for you.

Excellent movie

I wasn't sure what to expect from this movie. Actually, I expected it to be similar to the bad sequels that Disney usually puts out. Most straight to video sequels tend to have bad animation quality. The quality of animation was good in this "Goofy" sequel. I was starting high school with the first "Goofy" movie. Coincidence that Max and I started college "together". It was really touching to see how such a big event as going to college in life impacts both parents and children. I was glad to see PJ get a girl! The whole coffe house scene was very amusing. lol

One of Jet Li's BEST!!!

In my opinion, this is one of Jet Li's best movies. He does share the spotlight with other actresses, but his fighting skills are excellent throughout. I'm a big fan of the "fly in the air, walk on water" special effects of the newer Chinese movies, and this one does not disappoint! Great special effects and choreographed fight scenes make this a MUST BUY in my library!!! Other great movies I like that star Jet Li are: New Legend Of Shaolin and Fist Of Legend (original chinese version w/subtitles), and my ALL-TIME favorite - Kungfu Cult Master (or as it is listed in the released "American version" - Kungfu "Colt" Master.
