The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms - movie DVD cover picture
First and one of the best of the "Beast on the loose" tales

"The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms has always been a particular favourite of mine, not only because it was the first of the famous 1950's Sci Fi films to deal with the Atomic age and all its pitfalls, but because of the excellent effort in all departments that was lavished on it. Based on a short story by Ray Bradbury it had a good, and for the time, original story to work with.
"The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms" was and still is such a leader in many departments of the history of science fiction storytelling. It dealt with the type of storyline that had not really been used since "King Kong" back in 1933. It boasts the additional flourish however of dealing with Atomic age testing and the possible dire consequences it can unleash on both nature and mankind. The writing and plot development are literate and follow a logical sequence and there is an effort, not common in a lot of the films of this era, to explain about the effects man can have on the evolution process and how our meedling can be detrimental.
The film is also exceptional in that for the first time the sheer genius of Ray Harryhausen is seen at work in a film and his special effects wizardry in this film is wonderful . His creation of the fictional Dinosaur the "Rhedosaurus" is excellent and the scenes after the creature has been awakened by arctic atomic testing and begins its long journey back to its original breeding grounds are superb. The action that takes place in the eerie setting of a snow bound arctic location, and when the beast attacks the fishing boat, the lighthouse and finally when it comes ashore in New York City have never been equalled in its time.
The attack on New York City culminating in the beast been trapped and then killed at Coney Island Amusement Park is without a doubt the most memorable set of sequences in the film. The expert stop motion animation meshed into live action is excellent and really creates a feel of a beast crashing along streets causing death and destruction. The beast's fiery death in among the Rollercoaster is spectacular but it makes you wonder at who is the real villian of the piece, the monster or the humans that disturbed its sleeep and then felt the need to kill it.
Despite the films small budget and pioneer special effects it is an important and highly entertaining piece of movie making done at a time when these "monster on the loose" type of stories were still new and fresh. Many have followed "The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms" but most have not come near its excellence in style and execution of a gripping story. I love these 1950's Sci Fi efforts and they seem to have a heart to them that are largely missing from the movies on similiar topics that are made nowadays. As a time capsule of movie making as it used to be back in the golden age of sci fi cinema you can't go past "The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms"

This is filmmaking at its best

Excellent film. This is real filmmaking. Moving story without being sappy. Life's warts are shown here. But life's promise shines through. Even made me dream about living in a place like Dancer, TX.

Could have been even greater!

I am a U.S. History teacher in Grand Terrace, California. I did love the way that the film depicted Shaw and the 54th Mass., but the film did little to show that the very reason that blacks were allowed to join the North, was a political one. Lincoln saw that they were going to join the South, so he gave his famous proclaimation, freeing them. This in turn brought many blacks to the North that wouldn't have fought for them. There were also many blacks who did in fact fight for the South. It would have been very interesting to see a black/black conflict in the film for instance. I did very much enjoy the movie, but I wish I could show more than the T.V. version to my students. A PG rating would allow more young viewers to such a historical event!

you are the best at what you do!

I MYSELF HAVE BEEN AN AVID COMIC BOOK COLLECTOR SINCE 1961. SO TO SAY I HAVE A LOT OF PERSONAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE X-MEN COMIC WOULD BE PUTTING IT MILDLY! AS FOR THE MOVIE IS WAS MARVELOUSLY WRITTEN AND THE ACTING WAS SUPER AWESOME! IT FOLLOWED THE BOOK AS WELL AS POSSIBLE CONSIDERING THE DEPTH IT WOULD HAVE INVOLVED CONSIDERING THE LONGEVITY OF THE BOOK! THE X-MEN ALONG WITH MANY OTHER MARVEL BOOKS JUST KEEP GETTING BETTER ALL THE TIME. YOU HAVE PROVEN TO THE MOVIE INDUSTRY WHAT QUALITY REALLY MEANS IN YOUR MOVIE! ME AND A FRIEND WENT TWO SEPARATE TIMES TO SEE IT AND WAS VERY IMPRESSED AND WAS GLUED TO THE SCREEN LIKE KIDS AGAIN! THANK YOU FOR BRINGING EXCITEMENT BACK TO THE BIG SCREEN!

My Personal Comedy Hero

I adore this woman! I had the pleasure of seeing her live at the Laugh Factory recently and I only hope that this DVD contains some of that material! Her opening "multimedia" piece on Julia Roberts and the Wild Horses of Mongolia had the entire audience shrieking in hysterics. The whole set, from Apple and Banjo (future roommates at Promises!) to the brilliant final half-hour devoted to Clay Aiken (what would Jesus do??) was fresh, current, and perfectly showcased her wonderful wit, pop culture savvy, and flawless timing and delivery. I can't wait to own this DVD! Love you Kathy!

One of the best films I've ever seen, hands down!

Sad, disturbing, and powerful are all good words to describe this beautiful motion picture directed by David Lynch. Filmed in black and white, it tells the true and altogether touching story of John Merrick, a young man so grotesquely deformed he was forced to spend most of his short life as a carnival sideshow attraction.
Though he is looked upon and treated as an animal by both those who put him on display and others still who pay money to see him, Merrick's fortune soon takes a turn for the better in the guise of Dr. Treves. Treves, portrayed brilliantly by actor Anthony Hopkins, takes John into his care and tries to instill within him a sense of love, dignity, and acceptance.
You won't see a more emotionally draining movie than this one. It's an important film and one that I truly believe parents should watch with their older children, especially given that it's based on a true story and would do well in teaching them acceptance for differences in others.
Very well made and highly recommended.

I love it!

This video is sooooo great! It all flows together, its tons of fun, and features upbeat modern music. Im only 4 months pregnant now but it seems as though it will work great for any and every trimester. The workouts themselves are not overwhelming they are just perfect. I do them everyday! I have bought other pregnancy videos and they dont compare at all. Hers is definately the best. It kicks butt!

Wonderful

Let's see: Shakespeare, Howard Keel, Kathryn Grayson, Ann Miller, Bob Fosse, "Brush Up Your Shakespeare"; How the heck could this have not been one the best MGM musicals made?! It's one of those movies that I have on tape, but get sucked into anytime I run across it on cable - I just can't change the channel or turn the TV off.
