Wonderful View of the Hajj and Mecca from 3 Perspectives

This is a wonderful documentary of the Hajj with an inside view of the sacred city of Mecca. As a teacher of religious studies, I have seen several good documentary depictions of Mecca, but this is the best I have seen as it gives the viewer the perspective of a woman from Texas, a man from South Africa, and a man from Malaysia. This documentary takes the viewer on the Hajj, recounting the preparation for the Hajj, the journey to Mecca, and the various rituals associated with this Pillar of Islam. Most interestingly, the viewer learns about the meaning of the Hajj for the Muslim pilgrim. I HIGHLY recommend this DVD!

Everything positive all the other reviewers said...

...are absolutely true! I am a lifelong Trekker - have been watching Star Trek since '68 - but I have to say that aside from a couple of brilliant seasons of TNG, ST totally can't hold a candle to the incredible writing and acting of Firefly. Firefly even makes X-Files look a little slow.

I'm still a Trekker, but I would not shell out money to buy a ST DVD, whereas I would, if I had to, give up a couple of meals to buy a Firefly DVD! :) You won't regret owning it.

Go, Bub, Go...!!

Yeek! The third of George Romero's high-concept, low-rent zombie masterpieces, in which he explores the psychology of the undead. A small scientific team, with an unstable, volatile military attachment, is holed up -- literally -- in a vast underground government storage facility. Can they figure out what makes the zombies tick before time runs out... Or has it already? Apparently "fans" of the series pan this flick as inferior to the first two... I dunno; it seems pretty much of a piece with the rest of them, and it sheds some interesting new light on the zombies and their potential to develop social relations and culture... Pretty juicy, provocative stuff, if you ask me! The film's also pretty damn gory, at least in the last third act, when the fur really starts to fly; the first part of the film is curiously, atypically placid, other than the thick psychic tensions running amok among the survivors. There's a lot of hammy, even campy acting, but nothing gets in the way of Romero's thoughtful, subversive storytelling. If you ask me, this is a superior horror flick.

Killer!

Most people write these reviews with opinions dominating the scene. I try to keep it factual for a bit and give the reader something tangible to make a decision about the product. That crap being said, THIS ROCKS!! :)
Okay, so this was filmed in the early 80's (1980 or 1981) before the release of the Hot Space album. It was filmed in Ontario, Canada in front of about 15,000-25,000 people. It's about 80 minutes long and has only one disc. Not too many special features to talk about here.
The lighting on this tour was genius. Guitarist Brain May once callled it the "pizza oven" lights. They follow the mood of the songs almost perfectly. The show starts with a fast rendition of "We Will Rock You." Then they wind it down a bit. I have to agree with some people when they say Freddie played the piano more on this tour then the 1986 Magic Tour (Also very much worth checking out.) But, people have to realize the tours to follow were PACKED. It's kind of difficult to get 70,000 people to feel like they're virtually part of the show when the frontman is sitting at a piano.
Now, there are some high points and some not-so-high points. My favorite song has to be "Somebody to Love." What an amazing, beautiful piece of work. Freddie is just stunning. Also worth mentioning is the fact that they FINALLY let drummer Roger Taylor sing his kick ass song "I'm in Love with My Car"! 'Bout time! Some not so great points are "Get Down, Make Love" (not so powerful, very studio-like) and the fast version of "We Will Rock You."
The worst feeling of this DVD is the lack of audience participation. Anyone who knows Queen knows they get their audience to sing the songs with them (ie: "Love of My Life"). Here, they don't really sing along too much. Maybe just a lack of truly knowing the songs, I don't know. Still, Queen itself are at the top of their game.
So, now you should have enough info! One more side note: This is just one of many DVD's you can buy from Queen. Now, they're coming out with another concert! Remember, they are a band with many moods. This concert is more of an intimate mood (if that's possible to say when they're singing to thousands), so if you don't like this one, don't stop looking! Try Wembley, or Live at the Bowl. But, I think you will be happy with this one!

Ignore the plot, listen to the music!

Finally released on DVD this is a great opportunity to view some of the early stars of Rock'n'Roll. The plot is pure hokum and must've taken at least five minutes to write but this film is worth buying just to catch Chuck Berry, The Johnny Burnette Trio, Frankie Lymon etc. miming their hits of the day.The transfer to DVD is good, picture quality is excellent, the sound is just OK, it was a low-budget exploitation movie so Hi-Fi quality was probably not top of the agenda. One annoying feature is a 'pop-up' logo at the bottom of the screen during one of the songs. The extras, well the one extra, in the way of an Alan Freed Bio is interesting and adds some value to this release. Well done to Passport Productions, now how about a DVD release for the other low-budget Rock'n'Roll films from the '50's?

very entertaining, one of guest's best

I didnt like Waiting for Guffmann- so i was a bit skeptical on watching this movie. But i have to saw that this is one of the best movies i've seen this year. Guest can just make you so attached to the lovable characters he creates, and this movie is a perfect example. It focuses on 5 major dogs and their rather obsessive owners. This is definately a movie you can watch time and time again, to see what you missed. It never fails to lose your attention, and is flawless from start to finish. The dog show host was hilarious. I reccomend this to anyone a fan of dog shows or Christopher Guest- i'll be watching this one again.
