If Only "The Fool" Could Have Heard Me

I first saw LA STRADA within a few years of its original release. I still remember how I felt when I saw Gelsomina's face and heard her play her few melancholy notes on the violin. Almost fifty years later I can still see that face and hear those notes. I have to admit that I'd never heard of Federico Felini or his wife, Giulietta Masina. I didn't know that, in time, LA STRADA would be labeled a work of genius. I did know, by the way that it affected me, that I had been exposed to something exceptional. I pictured myself as a pretty macho guy back then, and I wasn't supposed to walk out of a movie theater with tears in my eyes. Luckily, no one saw me when I did.
For most of the movie, I wanted to take Gelsomina in my arms and protect her. I wanted to wrap a piece of Zampano's chain around his neck and strangle him with it. I wanted to grab "The Fool" by the shoulders and shake him and tell him, "If you keep taunting that bully he's going to make you pay for it."
Poor Gelsomina, I couldn't do a thing for her. "The Fool" was really a fool for not heeding my silent warnings and it cost him his life. As for Zampano, he would have been better off if I could have strangled him. His pain, a result of the pain he had caused, was worse than any punishment I could have dealt out.
My criteria as to what makes a movie great is a very personal one. It's also a very simple one. I don't look for multiple layers of symbolism or any other intellectual gobbledygook. It's how I react emotionally. On that score, LA STRADA is right up there at the top of my list.

The Best Cheering Up Film

I laughed until I cried. Not since Monty Python have I enjoyed a video so much. It was informative, educational, and entertaining. While students may not get the British-style humor, the other teachers and I enjoyed it immensely. This is a must-see for environmentalists.

Along Came a Spider - movie DVD cover picture

I went to see this movie today, and I got amazed of good it was. I didn't want the movie to end at all. I thought that Morgan Freeman and Monica Potter do an excellent job acting together. You won't imagine what happens at the end. It is all like a spiderweb. A psycho teacher, kidnapps the daughter of the senator, and it is Freeman's and Potter job to resucue her. I wouldn't recommend this movie for kids under 12. There is a lot of blood and that is why it is rated R. I would definately buy this movie for DVD. I recommend it to everyone. It is simpley... AWESOME!!

Pulp Fiction - movie DVD cover picture
If Elmore Leonard wrote "Three's Company..."

Quentin Tarantino cops a little from about a million different sources, mixes in some clever (and occasionally overwritten) dialogue, about a billion ..., some standout performances from John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson (one super-bad cat!), Uma Thurman and Bruce Willis, and comes up with one of the freshest, most influential films in recent years.
Travolta and Jackson play two dangerous men in black, paid killers for local kingpin Marcellus Wallace (a glowering, muttering-in-basso Ving Rhames) and they provide the film's central narrative thread. This bantering pair weaves its way from an early morning hit that ends with a very freakish occurence to a grisly accident to a date with Wallace's lovely wife Mia (Thurman). Told in a non-linear fashion, the story also manages to incorporate Willis as a pug fighter Wallace has ordered to take a dive (and who has other plans), a death-obsessed cabbie, a pie-loving potbelly-desiring cutie, sexual deviants, and a dance contest at a kitschy 50's-style restaurant. And then there's the briefcase...
Weirdly enough, the film amounts to a kind of hipster/mob sitcom. Characters get themselves into outlandish situations, and a lot of the film's humor derives from their frantic dialogue as they attempt to extricate themselves. It's full of quotable quotes, most of which I can't list here, and memorable bits by Christopher Walken, Steve Buscemi, Tim Roth, Eric Stoltz, Rosanna Arquette and Harvey Keitel as Mr. Wolf, a guy who fixes problems.
What's in the case? It doesn't matter. What matters is, like that fabled macguffin's mysterious contents, this film dazzles. It even created a genre, and helped spawn an indie film renaissance of sorts. Of course, we're probably all a bit weary of smart-alecs with guns popping off rounds and dialogue referencing 70s tv. And don't worry: "Pulp Fiction" is not nearly as violent as its reputation; for the most part, Tarantino actually cuts away from the gore and leaves a lot to the viewer's imaginations. That in itself can be a bit off-putting for some. For others, bite into this slab of cinema that's as meaty and tasty as a Big Kahuna burger.

Greatest Movie Ever

This is my favorite movie, and in my opinion, the greatest ever made. Not only is this movie extremely deep in substance and thought provoking dialogue, but there are some great examples of moral values, as well. Not only is this movie a classic (a long classic, 126 minutes), but should be viewed by everyone who enjoys watching great movies and learning more about the greedy decade of the 1980s. This is such a great movie, I've memorized it line from line.

Santa Claus the Movie (Widescreen Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
A Wonderful Christmas Movie

This is one of my favorite Christmas movies. It brings the legend of Santa Claus to life in a grandiose way (i.e. great Hollywood special effects and wonderful musical score!) This movie was produced by the Salkinds (which probably explains why some of the flying sequences are similar to the Superman movies.) I just recently found it is available now on DVD. The DVD gives you four movie trailers and a very interesting hour-long behind the scenes making of "Santa Claus: The Movie." It also has director's commentary, if you like that. Buy the widescreen version. Ever since owning a DVD player, I have enjoyed watching movies presented widescreen. I hate to see them "fit to screen," because it cuts so much out of the picture. The score is by Henry Mancini and is just magical, especially "Sleigh Ride Over Manhattan"! This is a wonderful Christmas movie that you and your family will enjoy for years to come!!

Vanilla Sky : The Most Creative Movie Ever....

I can't tell you anything about this movie. That would spoil everything this movie is about. It's too complicated to get into. I must say however, this is without question one of the most creative movies these eyes have ever seen....
Vanilla Sky isn't just a movie, it's a trip into the subconscience mind. Don't let any of the bad reviews keep you from at least seeing this masterpiece. T. Criuse is awesome, and his character in Vanilla Sky almost makes you feel like this could be anyone of us witnessing these experiences he's going through....
It's a MUST SEE. I bought this the day after I saw it because quite simply, it's one of the most creative, and imaginative movies I've ever seen....

The Woman in Black - movie DVD cover picture
A vengeful ghost story that defines the genre!

Oh how I wish they would re-release this movie on video. With the current success of THE RING as well as the classic selections from the British 1960's (THE HAUNTING, THE INNOCENTS, THE UNINVITED, et al)...THE WOMAN IN BLACK is the perfect tale of a ghost hell-bent on revenge and mayhem. This movie is very subtle in it's portrayal of horror because it has the viewer experience the ghost in little bits and off kilter glances, slowly building up to the inevitable confrontation. Imagine a black silouette void of all color...begging to be seen (in order to scare you to death) but always thwarted by the victim's doubt of the experience. However, the victims resistance breaks down eventually(with the viewer) while the observations become closer, and closer...clearer and clearer, UNTIL... .There is one specific scene that literally caused my wife and I to scream(no joke)where we get an up close in-your-face look at the woman in black's body and maniacal face!! My wife refuses to watch this movie again. I'd love to buy this film for my collection. It's a must have. A classic if there ever was one. Please re-release this!
