If I could give ten stars....

I would for the Sopranos, possibly one of the finest television shows on today, and now given to us as a gift on DVD.
"The Sopranos" is a multi-layered show that is a no-holds barred modern drama about the life of one Anthony Soprano, and all the forces in his life that are starting to pull his mind apart. From his family issues to the "family", Anthony, played brillantly believable by James Gandolfini, is starting to buckle under the strain of the weight of the world. There with the thread to sew his mind together is his psychiatrist, Dr. Jennifer Melfi, who confronts Anthony as no one else dare.
The acting is superb, the stories demand your full attention, and the philosophical nuiances play like a violin to the lonely trumpet sounds of Anthony trying to figure out life. And it's in his struggles that we join him, and pray he finds his way out as we should.
Truly, masterpiece theater.

An amazing film that everyone should see

I first saw The Battle of Algiers on September 12, 2001. It was all the more powerful because of that, although it is quite devastating in the first place. Personally, I think everyone should see this film, as it portrays the difficulties (personally, I believe, impossibilities) of fighting a "war on terror." An Italian/French/Algerian co-production, it portrays both sides of the French and Algerian conflict humanly and as even-handedly as possible. It shows the horrors and honors that both the French and the freedom fighters commit. It contains images that will never leave me - in particular the end sequence (which I won't spoil by detailing here). It's amazing and depressing how much this film resonates with the current state of the world.

Magnuson and Malkovich Magic

This movie is a treat! I don't see how anyone with a heart wouldn't like this movie. It is very sweet, funny and touching. John Malkovich is totally hiliarious in both his roles and Magnuson is great as Ulysses' love interest. Anne was perfect in her role as Frankie Stone, the sexy, smart and witty PR executive hired to fix and promote Jeff Peterson's Ulysses android mission to space.

This movie has laugh out loud moments. Seeing Jeff's reaction to Frankie's accidental influence on Ulysses is priceless. "My God, she's turning you into a hooker!!"

The twist at the end is perfect, especially seeing as how all along Jeff was the one more interested and basically primed for space. Ulysses just wanted to be human and loved. And he was the perfect "man" for Frankie.

The dvd transfer is perfect. I recommend buying it, especially if you are fan of the movie.

the best psychological film from that time.

Some people claim that this movie is specifically about angst and the the loneliness one feels when you reach middle age. I DISAGREE however. This movie is actually based on several pyschological factors that involve "becoming". Maybe another psychology major might read this and think. Yeah. It's a great movie. check it out.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding - movie DVD cover picture
Hilarious and Amazingly Accurate Portrayl of Greek Americans

Being a first generation Greek in America, I can attest that 90% of what happens in this movie is dead on accurate. From the flashbacks to childhood all the way through the end, the behavior exhibited by the parents in this movie mirrors my parents and most of the Greek parents I know.
The plot focuses on a 30 year old unmarried Greek woman who is still living at home (yes that is common) who desparately wants to do something more than work at the family restaurant and follow the path her parents have laid out for her: marry a Greek, have Greek babies, and feed everyone. The subtle messages of letting your past be a part of you without necessarily defining who you become is a powerful one and important for everyone, Greek and non-Greek.
If you are Greek, you'll find yourself or your family somewhere in this movie. The interactions between the father and anyone else are hilarious. He is definitely the scene stealer in this movie and fortunately there are few scenes without him. If you are a non-Greek, this will give you insight to our lives and confirm two points: Greeks treasure family above all else and Greeks living in America are obsessively proud of their heritage. Either way, this movie will make you laugh histerically out loud and wanting to see it again.

Al Pacino gives the devil his due

Of all the actors to portray Satan, Al Pacino gives the best performance as the prince of darkness over everyone else. It is Pacino's performance as John Milton (aka: Satan) that makes The Devil's Advocate worthwhile; with every other actor to portray Satan, they always portray him as a menacing, relentless sum of all evil. Pacino gives Satan a classy swagger never before seen, making the devil seem more human than previously imagined. The film itself is great, with Keanu Reeves' portrayal of Kevin Lomax, a hotshot lawyer who gets his chance to work in Pacino's lawfirm. The beautiful Charlize Theron and Connie Nielsen give good performances as well, especially Theron as Reeves' wife who senses something foul afoot, and eventually starts to lose her mind. Jeffrey Jones and Craig T. Nelson give good performances as well, Nelson is rather good as a murder suspect who Reeves is picked to defend. All in all, The Devil's Advocate is a great thriller, and Pacino is devilishly (no pun intended) charming as Satan. A little side note: when Pacino and Reeves go to the boxing match, Pacino introduces Reeves to Don King and they seem to be good friends. Whoever said that Don King made deals with the devil might have been right afterall.
