Ideally, this should be mandatory viewing!

In this film Morgan Spurlock makes his point very forcefully that fast food is indeed very harmful to a person's health. Yet people routinely eat fast food, sometimes more than once a day! People need some type of shock treatment to realize that fast food is dangerous to their health--and this film is one excellent tool people should use to educate others about the dangers of fast food. As the film points out, fast food companies have long tried (and succeeded) to hook kids from a very early age on junk food and fast food with high unhealthy levels of fat, cholesterol, and calories. (In one scene, when Morgan asks children if they can recognize George Washington, Jesus Christ, and Ronald McDonald, the only face they consistently recognize was McDonald!)

As other reviewers write, in Super Size Me the director of the film, Morgan Spurlock, goes on a 30 day diet of nothing but McDonald's fast food. If McDonald's doesn't sell it, he doesn't eat it. The experiment is extreme but proves Spurlock's point well. We see Morgan become ill, throwing up his food after just three or four days of the experiment. Then he soon has much less energy and his cholesterol shoots up with his internal organs taking a pounding. I was upset to watch it yet I admired his determination to make an important point. Morgan has arguments with his vegetarian girlfriend; she doesn't like his mood swings and she openly admits the quality of their sex life has deteriorated. The doctors start telling Morgan he might even have to go to an emergency room for any ill effects of the diet--after only three weeks! It's an important look at the debilitating effects of a fast food diet.

The DVD comes with extensive extras that are wonderful. We see how a school in Illinois succeeds brilliantly in providing state of the art physical education for its students to help them avoid becoming overweight. We meet a couple who collects McDonald's memorabilia. The viewer also sees Morgan interview Eric Schlosser, the author of Fast Food Nation. Morgan also interviews a "supermarket guru" who shows how sugar breakfast cereals are on the supermarket shelf at a child's eyelevel to entice them and hook them onto sugar cereals. There are other deleted scenes and Spanish subtitles.

There are, of course, some drawbacks to the film. McDonald's is almost exclusively singled out for criticism--hardly any mention is made of Burger King's menu, for example. I also would have liked to see how Morgan's mood swings affected his performance and relationships at work. And, although Spurlock does make the point that personal responsibility is a very important factor, the film doesn't go into this enough, at least in my opinion. Spurlock makes up for this, though, in a DVD extra about O.E., Overeaters Anonymous. I wish he had expanded on O.E. more.

All in all, I believe that because of the obesity epidemic this film is highly important. Why not show it to children in the schools as soon as they can comprehend it? (Of course, that will be a tough one, since school lunch programs are very tight with the fast food lunch companies.) I heartily recommend this film for anyone since it illustrates such an important point about our health. I recently heard over the radio that our generation might actually have a shorter life span than our parents' because of our lack of attention to our own health care; this film is one wake-up call people should pay attention to. After waiting for 6 months, I finally feel complete!

I know this is a contradiction of all other reviews, but here goes. Gleen Carter as Jesus was surprisingly and greatly dissapointing. I was never ever convinced of the fact that he was Jesus, never! I sat wacthing the video, I bought the day it came out mind you, and was absoulutly astonished at his one dimintioned interpretation of the character. His sharp contrast between little facial expression and suddenly much too much! Is wonderful for the Theatre but as an actor one must know the distinct differnce betwwen the two mediums. His small voice lent nothing to the emotion, he has a beautiful falsetto but not the right kind needed to pull it off. This part is famous for it rock like screeching, he gave a light soprano instead. I found him to be very unattractive, not in looks (that too) but in charisma. He had none, I never felt sorry for him, the key is to evoke empathy. On the other hand! All other aspects were done very nicely. Jerome Pradon was absoulutely astonishing as Judas. Those are the type of internal emoitions I would have liked to see from Jesus. Gleen Carter played all of his emotions on the outside, nothing was happining behind his eyes. I did find that since Gleen did not react off of Jeromes' Judas in quite the right way the realationship sometimes resembled a homosexual affair. Which could be an interesting take, but not what was intended here. Renee Castles' Mary was quite wonderful, I found her voice to be a bit too pop, for her powerful ballad "I don't know how to love him." But she did well, I would much rather cast an actress who sings, rather than a singer who acts. As for the others they gave marvelous performances. It was directed beautifully, with its interesting camera angles, and rich color scheme. Edwards had a wonderful concept, and different interepretations were refreshing. I have been in the show and I have never thought of it done quite this way before. Nice production, but when Mary sings of Jesus, "I don't how to love him, I don't see why he moves me. . ." You may find you agree.

Thirteen - movie DVD cover picture
Scary for parents of teens

Many have argued that "Thirteen" does not delve deep enough into the psyche of the characters, therefore we never understand what exactly it is that drives them over the edge. But the fact that this film was co-written by a thirteen year old (the actress who plays Evie) gives "Thirteen" instant credibility.
This is the story of a normal girl, Tracy (played magnificently by Evan Rachel Wood) who befriends the most popular girl in school, Evie. Instantly, Evie is a terrible influence, and the girls start going on shopping sprees funded by stolen money, get high on whatever they can find, drink often, and begin doing things with boys that thirteen year olds should not be doing. Tracy is a tortured soul, angry because her father does not care, because her mother cares too much and because her mom's boyfriend is bad news, according to Tracy. Holly Hunter is awesome as Mel, the mother, playing the character with a naivete thatcomes with a parent hoping their kid is alright. Another pivotal performance is by Tracy's brother, although I can't remember his name right now. His role is much smaller than the other three, but he combines a lack of caring with a big brother instinct that is very real.
This movie could be considered an eye-opener for parents. It seems insane that thirteen year olds would be up to these kinds of things, but we now live in a world where people grow up entirely too quickly, and this movie shows us that in gritty detail. I enjoyed the direction of this film, and it is shaky and grainy in some parts, adding to the realism of the situation.
Maybe we don't know the real reasons why Tracy is so upset with life, and why she choses to do what she does without remorse or any thought of the future, but the fact of the matter is that we don't always know these things, and often there is not even a reason. Simply put, she does do these things to herself, and it matters not what the reasoning is, just that they are done is enough. I can see this movie being pretty scary for parents, and maybe it should be.
This is a great film, better than the other movie of this type, "Kids", which was more an expoitation of youth than an analysis.

Groundbreaking, innovative.... Peter Gabriel in a nutshell.

This is easily of the best music video collections to date. The wait has been worth it. It sounds great and looks great. The one I did notice that was missing was "Excellent Birds" with Laurie Anderson, and an alternate video to "Don't Give Up" (the one Kate Bush is in made the way, when is SHE putting her videos out? Another video they could have put on the extras is "Here Comes The Flood" from her rarely seen Xmas special from 1979) but there are a lot of videos I'm pretty sure have never before been seen, "In Your Eyes" and "Solisbury Hill" were completely new to me. "Modern Love" in the extras section is pretty funny to see him right out of Genesis (who also have a video collection coming out, Peter's mentioned being on the Carpet Crawlers 99 video but unfortunately nowhere else... someone needs to put the 1973 concert film out already.

The only complaint I have is that his time in Genesis is not on video, and that more of his older concert footage from before "So" isn't on video as well, he did a "Rockpalast" show which has "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" on it, and the San Remo Festival concert in 82-83... and the Amnesty International shows in the late 80s, all of which show how great of a frontman he was with Genesis and how he kept an audience transfixed on him in concert.

Peter Gabriel on video, on CD, and especially in concert (whether it's a club or a stadium) will have you hooked. What's amazing to me is that he was able to leave Genesis' "prog rock" stigma and be welcome with open arms into "alternative rock", early involvement in music video, and have hit singles into the 80s and 90s as well, and STILL continue to put something new out that's quality. Even more astounding is why he's not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Genesis or solo for everything he's contributed to music, multimedia, and various causes.

Optional introductions by Peter (from various years) you can turn on and off which is good, and subtitles. It's great to hear the songs in Surround as well as how well the videos have held up over the years. The price you get this for and what you get out of it makes an even bigger treat.

An amazing movie that should win movie of the year

I am not a man who gives a movie 5 stars because i like it, I gave it 5 because thats what it is. The movie that outdoes all movies of the fall and most of the winter lineup (Lord of The Rings is the only movie it is even tied with.) With complete star power, a funny and einstein smart oscar winning script, powerful and eccentric acting, and a plot that is smart and just plain original. The original only gets 3 stars from me, it was too mediocre, this was only an amazing movie because of not only everything i mentioned, but Steven Soderberg, the best director of today in my opinion. The ending is too good to be true... Anyways, read on the Main Ocean's Eleven(2001) page for the plot. Just remember what I have told you, listen to no one else who give it anything less than 5 stars. Only listen to poeple who only give great reviews that are only perfect, they have their reasons and those reasons are greater and reasonable than anyone who even dismisses this movie like the worst ever made, and of course, they can't have reasons, there are none, you can only love this movie, see it! Trust me, you will have your reasons as well.
