Humor is Truth, Truth Humor

Thank God for Michael Moore! And thank the distributors of this video for getting the recent seasons of "The Awful Truth" available for the non-cable subscribing audience so quickly.
In characteristic form, Moore skewers the hypocricy of Washington, law enforcement and corporate America. He even takes on bible bangers, hitting the road with his "Sodom-Mobile" taking a mini gay pride parade to meet up with Fred Phelps' funeral-picketing homophobes.
With so much entertainment packed in the twelve episodes, I'll pick my 3 faves:
1. Dressed as Puritans, a crowd pickets Ken Starr's house for the filth of his publication, The Starr Report.
2. Mike places a personal ad and seeks out a date for Hillary Clinton.
3. Mike responds to the repeal of a restaining order placed on him by a business at 30 Rockefeller Plaza by a hilarious montage which reunites him with his favorite Plaza locations.

Frank Oz's Funniest Movie Of All Time

'What About Bob' was probably the funniest movie I'd seen since 'Stakeout', ironically which also starred Dreyfus. Although Bill Murray's childish neurosis is sometimes annoying, the movie is 'made' by Murray's and Dreyfus' clashing eccentric personalities..(Do I get my Doctorate yet?). Dr. Leo Marvin is the successful phychiatrist who recently publishes his own book and relishes in it's success and 'Good Morning America's interest. Own his way out to vacation, he is handed the case of an obsessive loon (Bill Murray) who refuses to let Dr. Marvin's vacation convince him that their sessions are on hold. Its hilarious watching Dreyfus' patience slowely wear thin as Murray delights his family and 'Good Morning America', and consequently ruins Leo's career and sanity. Think of the old cartoons when Elmer Fudd uses everything from little round bombs to guns in order to get rid of that old rabbit, but instead everything winds up backfiring. That is the comic feel of this well-acted great movie that if you ask me, was so good because of Richard Dreyfus' performance. I particularly like the big bomb scene when Leo decides to resort to 'Death Therapy', exciting his pestering patient with thoughts of a cure..oh Lord, this had to be one of the funniest movies ever. It does'nt matter what kinds of movies you like, this will make you laugh histerically by the third time you hear "BOB!!!".

A movie about people who do stuff that is not normal

This is really a great movie. Get it now before it totally goes out of print. The movie is approximately 3 hours long, and comes on 2 tapes. Most of the movie is Frank Zappa in concert with his 1979 band. On Halloween night, no less. The other segments are the band rehearsing, and some really cool claymation by Bruce Bickford.

A Different Slant

The DVD of The Talented Mr. Ripley works as well on small sreen as the spacious film did in the theaters. Somehow the character development seems more fleshed out, probably due to the fact that the Theater version lavished us with the visual wonders of Italy. But here we are allowed inside the minds of each of the sterling cast of five: Minghella has drawn both individual moments and fine ensemble acting from Damon, Law, Palltrow, Blanchett and Hoffman. The music score is mesmerizing and assists in seducing us into fallling in love with people who share their evil side while masking their whole being beneath the facade of The Upper Class. I think the reason Tom Ripley wins us over inspite of his deeds is the fact that he is trying so hard to capture "The American Dream"...and all the shallowness that can at times represent. Worth owning.

Almost Famous - movie DVD cover picture

Cameron Crowe deserved his Oscar for this wonderful movie's delightful screenplay. Almost Famous is one of those movies that stays with you; it has a big, sweet heart and is chock full of enchanting characters -- from Billy Crudup's deceptive rock and roller, to Kate Hudson's beguiling Penny Lane, to Frances McDormand's wickedly funny portrayal of Mom. The movie genuinely surprises you, and carries with it the ring of truth, in its situations, its dialog and its depiction of an era in time. The soundtrack captivates the early 70s rush of rock/pop, and evokes the wistful feeling of adolescence, possibility and yearning -- the perfect complement to Crowe's autobiographical screenplay.

This Classic Deserves A Salute

One of the finest of John Ford's films, yet surprisingly overlooked, this movie gives us both an honest glimpse into West Point and sincere characters to cry for and laugh with.
Tyrone Power and Maureen O'Hara make a charming match once more (see The Black Swan, quite a different movie), and it's a wonder to me that Ty's sensitive and utterly believable performance in this film wasn't given more notice than it was. He was perfect all the way down to his accent, which I thought would surely slip, and it never did. Maureen's portrait of her character was poignant and gentle, with that spark that is purely Maureen. The death scene blows me away each time with it's simplicity and honest grace. They were quite a team, both of times they were together.
All the performances were top-notch, making you forget you were watching a movie. I felt, instead, as if I were being allowed into sacred ground, welcomed with open arms by the memories of that proud place.
This is truly a masterpiece. Ford at his finest. If you get a chance to see it, do. I can't recommend it strongly enough.

Starman - movie DVD cover picture

After watching so many alien movies that deplict aliens as mean and scary, every so often you'll find one that sort of makes you feel sorry for them.
That is the case with Starman. 'Scott' intercepts a recored that homo-sapions have launched in space and he answers the call. When he gets here the human race try to kill him. And all he wants to do is go home before he dies.
The music in this movie is very dramatic as it helps the mood of what 'Scott' is going through to get home.
Yes there is romance, if you like that kind of thing, but it does not take away from the over all atmosphere of the movie. This is a good one to buy.

Sparrow Rules

Johnny Depp's dramatic and artistic portrayal of Jack Sparrow is the highlight of this film which otherwise would have been a collection of well-executed special effects. The Curse of the Black Pearl storyline was interesting and creative and kept me anxious to find out what would happen next.

The Thomas Crown Affair - movie DVD cover picture
Round, like a circle in a spiral

This remake of the highly rated Steve McQueen/Faye Dunaway film is that rarest of all films, a remake that is as good if not better than the origninal. The plot centers on Thomas Crown (Pierce Brosnan), a Donald Trump like businessman who indulges in many exciting and expensive hobbies - racing catamarans, sail planes, golf (with huge side bets) and art theft. He sets up and pulls off an elaborate theft that sets the NYPD and insurance investigator Catherine Banning (Rene Russo) on his trail. She quickly sees through his innocent bystander pose and focuses her attentions, both personal and professional, on Crown. Their affair escalates and vies with the action of the art theft/investigation for the viewers attention. The tension from both sides of the story continues until the last scene.
The style of the film is reminiscent of the original, quick cuts, split screens, rapid pace driven by powerful background music. Brosnan quickly establishes the character of Crown as powerful, arrogant and wealthy with only a few words of incidental dialogue. Russo quickly establishes herself as his equal which changes the film from a slick heist film to a romance. The cinematography is breath takingly beautiful and is backed by a lush music score.
The DVD includes both wide-screen and standard formats, English and French subtitles and dubbing, and trailers from both the '68 and '99 versions. There is also an audio commentary that brings even more to the film.
This is definitely a DVD that is worth buying (as opposed to renting) it is one of those films that merits watching again and again, though it is not one for family watching as it is very definitely and deservedly an R rated film.
