Hilarious movie, but apparently it's misunderstood.

I am actually not that big of a South Park fan. I watched the show for several seasons, but after the movie came out the show seemed kind of tame in comparison. Team America is anything but tame. The language, content, music....everything is as extreme and funny as it can be and I wrote this to say that even people who don't like South Park can still enjoy this.
Before I wrote my review, I decieded to check out what other people thought and it was as shocking as the movie. Review titles like "Neocons will love this movie," and "HATEFUL, NAZI-LIKE, PROPAGANDA FILM" soar like giant flags of stupidity. Just because this movie makes fun of Michael Moore, Alec Baldwin, and other actors who think their opinions matter, doesn't mean that its anti whatever those guys are. I'll admit I'm not an expert on politics, but when did conservitives start supporting gratuitous violence, language, sex scenes, and America bashing? The title of the movie makes fun of Americas' believe that the world is theirs, America gets its intelligence from a retarted computer, and in order to stop a terrorist from blowing up a city with a bomb, America blows it up with missiles. I don't know what's worse, the fact that people can watch two things and only see one of them, or that someone actually looks to puppets for political guidance. Every single person, place, and thing that appears in this movie regardless of affiliation is there to be made fun laugh.

The Office- Finally a comedy I can laugh at!

I had heard rumors about The Office from poking around on the internet, but was never really interested because my cable provider does not offer BBC. That all changed when I was trying to decide what to get my father-in-law for Father's Day. I walked past a DVD display in Target and there was The Office-Season One, and The Office- Season Two. They only had one copy of Season One left, which is surprising considering I'm in South Dakota (not exactly the British Humor Mecca). My father-in-law is your typical corporate guy who is constantly frustrated by his job and the people around him. I knew right away what we had to get him for a gift.
Naturally, after reading the back of the DVD I became curious, and my husband and I ended up purchasing The Office Season One & Two for ourselves.
I can't say enough good things about The Office. The characters are flawlessly developed (not shallow play-things like the cast from Friends), the writing solid, and the humor deft but subtle. There have been several times where my husband and I were laughing so hard that we were crying. Season One, Episode Two, where Gareth is "investigating" Tim and Dawn, is one of my many favorite moments.
Don't be put off if you've never worked in an "office-setting"- The Office can appeal to anyone who has ever held a job and was forced to deal with co-workers. My dad, who has been a truckdriver his whole life, LOVES The Office!
A word from the wise, though: You'll definitely want to watch with the subtitles on. Since it's filmed "mockumentary" style, some of the things they say are muttered, and the subtitles help you to keep up with the humor.

Great movie!

Miss Congeniality is an amazing movie! It has the gorgeous Sandra Bullock and she does her job well. As an uncouth FBI agent, she enters the 'Miss America' contest. Sandra would probably be the last person on earth (in the movie) to enter a beauty contest, but she has to do it, because she gets word of a planned attack on the winner of this contest and is determined to find the crooks and hand them over to the cops. That's the basic story line. It is very well portrayed and all the actors do a good job. And the best part is: even kids can watch it! All-in-all, a great buy!

Our Son Loves It!

We bought this DVD based on reviews read here and it was a great purchase. Our 8 months old son has loved this DVD since the first time he saw it. We've had it for about 4 months and he still loves it enough to spin his head around when he hears the intro and then actually sit still for the entire 1/2 hour. It is old fashioned animation, but our son prefers this over many newer kids DVDs including Elmo. We also have the Counting Songs version and he loves that too. The Learning Songs version is a bit more enjoyable the 100th time you've seen it, but both are great.

Fight Club (Single Disc Edition) - movie DVD cover picture

The first rule of fight club is "you do not talk about fight club", but i'm gonna risk both this and the second rule of fight club: "you do not talk about fight club". David Fincher is a funny guy.

FC is about an insomiac (Edward Norton in fine form). he has a crap job which involves daily menial tasks. but he is clever/cynical - you decide. He takes a bunch of pills to sleep but they dont work, then he finds the answer...

He attends help groups and by crying/letting others cry he can finally sleep. then

he meets Marla (Helena Bonham Carta). She attends help groups (a 'tourist') including one for testicular cancer (dont ask). After meeting her he cant sleep.

Then he mets Tyler (Brad Pitt). Tyler Durden. Then his apartment is blown up and moves in with Tyler. Him and Tyler start Fight Club. It goes national. Marla and Tyler have rocky relationship that falls apart, but thats a sideline to the main story.

The Edward Norton character becomes suspicious of Tyler and finds out the real reason..and target... for Fight Club. cue plot twist and jump back to the first scene of the film.

This film has everything from topless totty (HBC), to fights, to explosions reminiscent of McVey. Oh, it has a killer plot as well that twist every time you think you get it right up till the final not-quite-climactic scene. and it explains that you can make dynamite from soap and sell rich people's fat back to them.

Laced with irony, wit, and sharp dialogue this is David Fincher's Pulp Fiction. something for everyone. it is a must see film.

Medea - movie DVD cover picture
Barbaric, Raw and Brilliant

I first saw Medea in college and was highly critical of it, finding it disappointing on almost all counts: terrible sound editing, cheap film stock, over bright lighting, bizarre, amateurish acting styles, inadequately edited, etc. Then there was the extended murder scene of Glauce and Creon going seemingly on forever, and then . . . wait; what's this? It's repeated all over again? Did someone get the wrong reel into the house?

Another ten years went by before I watched it again and after the second viewing, found myself emotionally drained, my jaw on the floor with the realization that I'd just finished a film that alternately horrified, fascinated and astonished me.

Medea is a grim, violent, film, minimally processed which only adds to its gruesome, wild rawness. This is Pasolini's Medea, not Euripedes and it is not easy viewing. Its wild, African/Middle Eastern score with the nasal bleating of women's voices in near pre-historic sounding rhythmic chant adds further to the element of being "out there" this film produces: This is about as far away from popular cinema as one can get. Medea doesn't easily compare to films of any other style or genre; not even with some of Pasolini's other work. But, if you can succumb to its hypnotic, mesmerizing pace at once both frenetic and static - you will realize this is as about as close to a hallucinatory experience one can achieve without the use of an illegal substance. Granted, not everyone wants that experience.

As Medea, Callas is simply amazing. Oddly, when the film came out she was roundly criticized for not being able to transfer the magic she so naturally gave on stage to the big screen. I will strongly disagree. The more I watch this film (which is probably several times a year for well over a decade), the more amazed I am by her performance in it. Where I, too, had first been critical of her languid weirdness, I've grown to see her
commitment to the role. I've come to be riveted to her painfully expressive mask as she completely inhabits this character who is, quite literally, capable of everything (yes - everything is the right word here).

Where I was once critical of the lighting, I've grown up to realize what Pasolini did; why he chose to film at the times of day he chose, and the resulting, fascinatingly brutal and surreal luminosity that bathes the entire film and the almost palpable sense of its visual texture. Stunning. The landscapes Pasolini chose to film in are as brutal and as vital as the characters of the tale. His near excision of all spoken text ( the screenplay is nearly dialogue free) brings us into a timeless, yet somehow ancient world where all is understood without the use of verbal communication. The savage, bloody rites of sacrifices for fertility and harvest initially seem barbarous then become somehow beautiful and fascinating. Then they make one cringe with the realization of how, not so long ago, this was us.

A remarkable, savage and beautiful film.

Very well done in all aspects

Beautifully shot, nicely scored, well acted, and - above all else, well written and put together. Script and dialogue are definetly above average, and are executed as they should be. The film's scenes flow coherently, and tell their tale well.

In sum, it is a very stylish production throughout. A moving and interesting story. It isn't the only film of its kind, but it does stand out as one of the best. In my personal opinion this is a better achievement for Spielberg than Schindler's List. It stands out from the vast mass of mediocre films that are ceaselessly churned out as something that has more to it.
