Hell Upside Down...What a great movie. A +++++++++++

I just bought this DVD and was very impressed. The picture quality is outstanding. I saw details I have never seen in this film. Wonderful! Love all of the stars...especially Carol Lynley as the terrified pop singer...just to hear her sing "The Morning After" again was worth the wait. Roddy, Shelley, Stella and the rest are great also. I highly recommend this film to anyone that is a fan...or even if you are just seeing it for the first time.

Will Make You Love ANNIE!

I saw this on this on t.v. and my daughter screamed that she wanted 'her Annie'. I bought it and told my family we'd watch Annie. They said, "No!" We watched it and they asked me to rewind it several times. Other family members also love it. They could watch it over and over, singing the songs by heart. They did an excellent job with this Annie!

Mean Streets - movie DVD cover picture
the most influential independent film

"Mean Streets," simply put, is the greatest independent film ever made. At the very least, it pioneered what modern audiences have come to associate with the best of indie cinema, and what, by the late '90s, has become so essential to our perception of so-called "hip" movies that the once daring and exhilarating techniques are now mostly used as frustrating cliches. The picture itself, made in 1973, is most famous for kick-starting three major careers. Martin Scorsese and Robert DeNiro later collaborated as a director/actor team on four more masterpieces: "Taxi Driver," "Raging Bull" "The King of Comedy" and "Goodfellas." Harvey Keitel, in the leading role, went on to play other memorable characters, like "Pulp Fiction"'s Mr. Wolf. Cast as Charlie , a small-time, young gangster in New York's Little Italy, Keitel struggles to make sense of his Catholic background and help his troubled friend (DeNiro) stay out of the powerful Mafia players' way. What seems to be a familiar scenario, used as far back as the classic Bogart/Cagney vehicles, gets an unusually complex treatment from Scorsese. A conventional, linear plot structure with big speeches and witty one-liners from main characters is abandoned for a grittier, naturalistic approach. The film consists of a series of telling episodes, related only through their participants. "Mean Streets" has much more in common with the works of Italian Neo-realism or French New Wave, rather than a typical gangster drama. Its unorthodox, original, yet unpretentious camera work gives the film an unprecedented vitality that young filmmakers have attempted to recreate for decades. Now commonplace shots, such as a subtitled introduction of a particular character, a fight sequence tracked through the four corners of a room in a single take, a swaying hand-held camera to create the sense of an alcohol-induced stupor, have all been popularized through this movie, a veritable Bible of dynamic cinematography. Another revolutionary aspect of "Mean Streets" is the virtual lack of a script. Most of the key scenes were almost fully improvised, thus sounding far more authentic than the old-style, theatrical delivery used in most American films up to that time. The actors' speech is so profanity-ridden that no screenwriter of the time could have possibly doctored anything even close. De Niro's flamboyant turn as a youth on the edge of sanity is unlike anything before. In fact, the swear-fests of later crime movies (and indie classics like "Clerks") owe a direct debt to his extraordinary performance as Johnny Boy. One of Scorcese's most groundbraking achievements was his incorporation of popular songs into the soundtrack. All of the icluded music originates elsewhere- Italian traditional recordings (Opera arias, Folk tunes) and for the most part, glorious, irresistable Rock'n'Roll of the early 60's (Motown, the Stones, Girl Groups, DooWop). The easily identifiable hits serve as atmospheric settings, adding an extra, personal dimension to any given scene. George Lucas' "American Graffiti", released in the same year, operated by the same principle, establishing a tradition that seems to expand with every coming year. As it is often the case with true independent cinema, "Mean Streets" was ignored at the box office, despite an underground acclaim which helped launch not only the great talents behind it, but an entire school of filmmaking.

Spookley is great for kids and adults

We just got the DVD and my 3 year old daughter loves it. We have watched it about 4 times already (I find myself humming the music all day!) We walked into the bookstore yesterday and the first thing we saw was a Spookley book on a display for Halloween so we had to get that as well. They had a bunch of different Spookley books and a small stuffed animal too. The story is such a nice story (when my daughter gets a bit older she may appreciate the moral of the story better) We highly recommend this and plan on buying it for my brothers kids.

Peacemaker Vol. 1

Peacemaker is a strange series at first glance. As some commentaries point out, it is odd to see the Shinsengumi as the protagonists in a series. Unlike Rurouni Kenshin, (where it, in a sense, glorifies the Choshu and the Shinsengumi) the Shinsengumi are the heroes in Peacemaker.

Tetsunosuke Ichimura, the main character, is a 15 year-old who, though a bit obnoxious, has a kind personality. His heart is in the right place, but is torn between his desire to seek revenge and at the same time, not cause bloodshed. He is determined, but sometimes (or rather often), he gets in too deep. He is immature in many ways and has much to learn, but he grows on you as the series progresses.

The show itself follows Tetsunosuke and his quest to join the Wolves of Mibu. It does, however, in good taste, veer off to explore other characters. It can be over dramatic, and the digital effects can be annoying, but it is still fun to watch. The plot has some strange stories, though. I disliked it when it ventured into the parts involving some strange man who looks like a clown and a summoner who controls the dead.

The other characters, Susumu and Okita being the most intriguing, are likeable. I mistook Okita for a woman at first (his mein caught me off guard). Though I don't mean to compare two series, I preferred the Saito Hajime from Rurouni Kenshin.

Overall, even if it has flaws, Peacemaker is a likeable series. The best episode on this disc is the third (I especially enjoyed the part where it shows what happened in the alley, when there was no talking and only music; very well executed). The animation is somewhat lackluster, but the characters are fun to look at. The extras on the fold-out in the case were a nice bonus, too. Give the series a chance, it's likely you'll get hooked like me. (note: I watched it in Japanese with subtitles)

Queer as Folk - The Complete First Season (Showtime) - movie DVD cover picture

First, I must introduce myself as a gay guy. There are so many of us! I offer kudos to Boy Corrupted, who hit the nail right on the head when he said that this show is superficial.
The focus on sex, sex, and more sex, with no real look into the personalities and lives of the characters in this show really do a disservice to the gay community. Our community is beautiful, full of the same love, respect, and talent that exists in the straght world, but it is not given enough light in this show. American movies and television shows miss the point when it comes to showing real life and relationships. It is so unnatural and rehearsed. Just try watching a foreign series, and you will know what I am talking about. I haven't seen the British version of Queer As Folk, but would be tremendously interested in doing so. I am sure it is phenomenally done.
It is true that gay culture reveres good looks, and the club life, but there is much more to it than parties and getting wasted. Gay life is about love, and the desire to be loved an accepted ust like everyone else. If QAF would touch on some political issues, like the importance of gay marriage, that would serve our community well. If the show would educate its viewership instead of serving up old stereotype, that would also help. I am longing for a series that would be sweet and candid, showing the gay community for what it is. Shows like QAF, and Queer Eye for the Straight Guy for that matter, only paint the gay community in a negative light. I hope this review catches the eye of a daring producer who will create the kind of masterpiece we need to show us for who we really are.
I will follow up on this review when I have more time, I am at work at the moment!
Love to All,

More thoughtful than you'd expect... I don't like Pitt or Cruise, but the movie's so dramatic and enthralling, I forgot who they were. Beautiful score, intriguing story, fascinating direction, plausible acting (by today's standards).
