Hearwarming movie!

This movie is based on the true story of Jimmy Morris, who had a lifelong dream of becoming a major league baseball pitcher. In flashbacks the movie shows that while he was growing up, Jimmy would get involved in a team just in time for his family to move, as they followed his career-military father. Added to this was his father's tacit disapproval of his son's dreams of a baseball career. Jimmy continued to play until a serious injury sidelined him, and he became a teacher and coach in the small Texas town of Big Lake. As the movie switches to the present time, Jimmy's team is not doing well until he challenges them to dig deep and feel free to dream. They, in turn, challege him to make another try at professional baseball. Rather sheepishly he tries out, while ignoring jibes about his age. The rest of the story is predictable, yet heart-warming. This is a good movie for the whole family.

Essential On So Many Levels

I saw "Don't Look Back" again the other day, my first time in a number of years. I actually was prompted to this after seeing the recent Bob Dylan interview on "60 Minutes" (to promote his equally astonishing memoir "Chronicles-Volume 1"). Were you as astonished by the "60 Minutes" piece as I was? In any event, "Don't Look Back" is essential on so many levels: first and foremost, it gives us a never-since equalled candid view at life (on the road) with Dylan. While it does contain a number of performances, "Don't Look Back" is not a concert movie. It's more a pre-concert movie than anything else, watching Dylan getting ready to perform in the "Green Door" and other performing halls' waiting rooms. The film also remains essential as a looking glass onto England, 1965, with its gritty, if not to say seemingly always gray outlook and feel to it.

Back to the "60 Minutes" interview. When I was watching it, it felt so familiar. Even though the interviews are separated by almost 40 years, Dylan played the "60 Minutes" interviewer in very much the same way he played the British journalists in 1965, although admittedly in a somewhat nice fashion now. Watch again the "interview" Dylan did with the reporter from "Time Magazine" towards the end of "Don't Look Back", it's the highlight of the movie for me.

The live performances in "Don't Look Back" are equally essential, if for no other reason that you are watching Dylan in Spring, 1965 (almost 40 years ago to the day!), a mere months before turning electric at the Newport Festival. From an audio perspective, the performances in "Don't Look Back" are very similar to the material covered in the 2 CD set "Dylan Live 1964", issued in Spring of 2004. The staying power of "Don't Look Back" 40 years later is proof that this movie is essential for any Dylan fan. Highly recommended!

all I can say about this film is...WOW!

One of the best teamed up action of three great martial artists. Jackie Chan, Samo Hung, and Yuen Biao aka the three brothers, really work great together. They make this movie fun and intense. The stunts are incredible, as usual with J.C. movies. The sad part is, this is the last time the three brothers team up, hope they decide to do something like this again.

Hard-boiled W.W.II movie that pulls no punches.

Beach Red is finally out on video. One of the best films about World War II and it's made by people who were there.
This movie was produced by film companies from Japan, U.S.A. and the Philipines. Cornell Wilde stars and directs this film that inspired The Thin Red Line remake and Saving Private Ryan. Rip Torn co-stars as a battle harden sergant who uses unorthodox techniques to get information from his p.o.w.s. A grim film that was way ahead of it's time. Terrance Mallick must have really loved this movie, The Thin Red Line is virtually a remake. Go out and get the extended version of Big Red One as well, Two highly underrated films about World War II.

I guarantee full satisfaction.

A darkly beautiful film

"The Hours" is a sad, yet great story, of the lives of three women, who are living in different times. One is Virginia Woolf(Nicole Kidman) who is living in 1931, and is writing her book, Mrs. Dalloway. Virginia also has some problems though, in that she hears voices, and is also suicidal. The next is Laura Brown(Julianne Moore) who is living in 1949. She is a pregnant houswife, who has a loving husband(John C. Reily) and a young son. However, she is unhappy with her life for various reasons, and is contemplating suicide. She is planning to make a cake for her husband, and seems to be broken up about many different things. Then, there is Clarissa Vaughn(Meryl Streep), a lesbian who is planning a dinner party that night for Richard(Ed Harris)her ex-lover, who has just won the top prize for poetry writing, and is also dieing from AIDS.
What makes the film work so well is the acting. A film like this requires that we care about the characters. The dialouge is well written and the acting is off the charts. Without brilliant performances, this film would not be nearly as good as it is. The reason acting is the key factor in this film is because 99% of the film is dialouge. There's no action, no sex, or anything other than the characters talking. That's just fine with me.
I found everyone in the film so intriguing and intresting. The film is two hours, but I felt as though it could've gone on for another two hours and I still wouldn't have been board.
Another highlight of the film is the beautiful score from composer Philip Glass, whose music makes the scenes complete. It fits the film too, because most of the music is like someone gradually gaining anger or frustration, and then exploding or wanting to explode.
Nicole Kidman won Best Actress for this film at the oscars, and rightfully so. She is great as Virginia...but everyone else is equally great. This is such a complete cast.
"The Hours" was my second favorite film of 2002, only behind Steven Spielberg's brilliant masterpiece "Minority Report". This film is one that you see, and cannot forget.

My take

While this is not the best season they had, it was the original, where it all started.
I was in high school when this came out, and I enjoyed every moment. I would remember making sure there were no plans so I could stay home and watch it that night.
What made this show great was its ability to make fun of itself and it color. They made it a point that there was 0% seriousness in anything they did, which made it that much better. They were able to have fun without offending (I will say 'most') people in many different aspects. Carrey did well as the 'white-guy' target.
I remember we would talk about this show at school all the time, and no one would think it was a racial attack.
I recommend this to anyone who can afford it... = )

The Dark Crystal

A First-Rate Fantasy! Like the "Star Wars" trilogy, "Legend", "Labyrinth" and many others, this fantasy-based film delights the viewer by taking us into another world where "Good" and "Evil" must co-exist. This film will delight both young and old. One caution: The film does an amazing job with the dark and sinister characters and this may prove too realistic for the very young viewers. (I think that many of us remember experiencing nightmares from the flying monkeys in "The Wizard of Oz!) The talents of Jim Henson/Frank Oz and their amazing creative team are very impressive, taking the puppet/muppet craft to new heights. The viewer is treated to these characters in the form of the evil vulture-like Skeksis and their oversized bug "henchmen" the Garthim, the chanting and mystical "Mystics", the wize wizardress "Ogra", the Podlings, Jen and Kira, the last of the Gelfings, and a host of other amazing supporting characters and creatures. It is easy to identify with the film's theme of Good vs. Evil as we watch the small and elfin-like Jen take on a challenge that was prophesized long ago. We are reminded that we when you belief in yourself, great things are possible! I would highly recommend this film for all.
