Has anyone ever noticed similarities to

One of my favorite films is "Darling," the 1965 classic that won Julie Christie a Best Actress Oscar. Upon reflection, I have found several similarities between that film and "Mahogany" - and I wonder whether these remain coincidences or if the screenwriter (and initial director Tony Richardson) had that earlier film in mind when developing this vehicle for Diana Ross?

Cases in point:

Julie Christie's character Diana Scott ("Darling") 'stumbles' into modeling; so does Diana Ross' character Tracy Chambers ("Mahogany").

Both are referred to as their one-word monickers throughout the film.

Both flee romances and travel to Rome where they befriend a [...] photographer.

Darling speeds around in a sports car; Mahogany is the passenger in a speeding sports car.

Darling's photo is passed around at a board meeting of advertising executives; same for Mahogany.

Both attend avant-garde parties.

Both find themselves unhappy living with an older, wealthy aristocrat.

Both return home to their lovers.

Just food for thought.

The best comedy I have ever seen

Maestro Brooks has reached the maximum quality a comedy can ever get in the History of the World. From the stone age to the French revolution, you can find the turnaround events of the history in the most funny way one can imagine in this movie. One piece of bad news for the nes who have watched the first part: The second part, advertised at the end of the movie, has never been shot - pity for Brooks fans like myself. "The producers", "High Anxiety", "Silent movie", "Life stinks" were a piece of art, but in "History of the world", Mr Brooks really outdoes all of his past and future work. Two thumbs up, truly deserved five stars...

Triumph - Live at the Us Festival - movie DVD cover picture
This is Real Rock-n-Roll

This DVD features Triumph at the infamous "US Festival" in 1983. The line-up for that day was incredible, featuring other rock acts such as Motley Crue, Ozzy, Judas Priest, Scorpions, and Van Halen. Obviously, Triumph was not intimidated by the other big-name acts, delivering a smoking set of material played with depth and precision. Triumph was touring their most recent release at the time, the fine "Never Surrender." My favorite Triumph album is the prior "Allied Forces," and several cuts from each make the performance. Also included are the Triumph classics "Lay It On The Line" and "Rock and Roll Machine." I saw this tour in Texas, also in 1983, and both were outstanding performances. The difference is with this DVD you are on the front row and the 5.1 sound is magnificent. The included 80's videos and other various concert footage is a nice bonus, although, to me, it illustrates how Triumph got off the track of playing killer hard rock and venturing into commercial pop and ballads. I can't help but wonder if this was a main factor in the break-up of the band. Comments from Rik at the time have him sounding less than thrilled. Also included are recent interviews with drummer/vocalist Gil Moore and bassist/keyboardist Mike Levine. Wish they could have gotten Rik Emmitt in there, too, for his overall perspective. Too bad there is much animosity between the two camps. Overall this DVD is fantastic. For $16.99 here on Amazon, it's a no-question buy for fans of the band. I only wish it was longer. Maybe with all the great reviews from fans, a little more magic power will come through and a Triumph reunion might at least be discussed.

More Great Anime.

The original Vampire Hunter D is an Anime classic, much like Akira. This sequel is by no means a let down. The story and animation are excellent. If you've seen the first Vampire Hunter D, you need to see this. If you're new to Anime, both this and the origianl should be on your must see list.

Hoffa - movie DVD cover picture
A must see for everyone, including schools.

"Hoffa", released in December of 1992 along with other bio- pics such as "Malcolm X" and "Chaplin", was a film that opened and faded in a snap. Audiences really took it for granted, thinking it would be a glory film about someone who didn't deserved to be praised. I will agree that the film did take a few liberties, but that's a minor quibble because this film ultimatily showed what few had the courage to acknowledge about Jimmy Hoffa: his fight for the well-being of mankind.DeVito and Company made a searing biography that gave Nicholson one of the best performance of his lifetime. Everyone should view this film and form their opinion. Those who lived through the time period from the film should give it a look. And, this film should be shown in every high school history class, so they can learn about a man they should never forget.

Percussion Bliss

This video turned out to be better than I could have imagined. Neil Peart's discussion of percussion techniques, including his transition from match style to traditional style drumming, is awe inspiring. This video is a must have for any drummer or fan of Neil Peart.

A laugh a minute

Take one state-of-the-art battle spaceship. Throw together a crew of a pilot who wants to be a cook, a voice actor, a penny pinching accountant, a high strung anime fan, a genetically engineered 12-year old girl, and a few other loonies, and this is what you get. And make no doubt about it, this show is hilarious. The action is fast, loud, and even sometimes confusing as no one ever seems to shut up on this show (Except for Ruri, who makes an occasional observation of 'Idiots!'. This is what Star Trek would be like if the replicator would make coffee using Jolt Cola instead of water. This first tape contains three episodes, and all three are very funny. In later volumes, the action slows a bit, and both the characters and the story grow at a more comfortable pace, albeit amidst some hilarity. But this first tape will definitely whet your appetite for more. I currently have the first eight volumes and hope to be getting the last few pretty soon.

It's About Time

It's about time that Fox put out M*A*S*H for the public (and without those stupid subscription/shyster video clubs). Thank heaven for DVD!
M*A*S*H is a brilliant show. Funny, yet touching. I have seen every episode at least 50 times but only in reruns, since I was only four when the series debuted. It was fantastic seeing these episodes uncut. Syndication takes it toll on the series and they cut many of the really funny parts for commericals. Epsiodes like "Chief Surgeon Who?" and "Pilot" show how much talent was in the writing, directing and acting of this excellent show. My favorite is "Sometimes You Hear the Bullet" with a very young Ron Howard.
I plan on collecting every season, just to have a complete library. M*A*S*H is one show I never get tired of. Now, if they would just do the same thing with "I Love Lucy"!

Great for Social Studies teachers

I teach social studies to grades 10 and 11. An English teacher recommended Indochine to me. I am so glad she did. The kids get totally engrossed and there is enough historical backrgound to facilitate several lessons: 1)European Imperialism, 2) French Involvement in Vietnam, 3) Vietnamese Nationalism, and 4) the Mandarin Class in Vietnam. I have shown this video for three years now. The kids consitently rate it tops and they enjopy the writing assignment/learning log I assign with it. The characters are complex and well developed. As a Vietnam veteran, I also appreciate the movie in its own right. This is one great flick.
