It's about time this one got a special edition DVD

Personally this is one of my favorite children's movies. Gene Wilder does a fantastic job as Willy Wonka. The story is great, the sets are fantastic, and the music is good too. A true classic. The extras to be featured on this DVD (new documentary, audio commentary, etc.) are a great improvement over the previous DVD release. I would highly recommend this DVD.

Big Trouble in Little China (Single Disc Edition) - movie DVD cover picture

Check this out, when this originally came out we saw it every weekend at the same theater late night over and over again for like 6 weeks straight, that's how good it is. And it isn't easy to find a movie in this genre/s that is deserving of major recognition. Not terribly successful on first run, semi-underground cult film. Kurt Russell is superb as Jack Burton. Kim Catrell (Sex & The City) is great! The supporting cast is perfect, they cast this well. Thank you John Carpenter for making one of the most enjoyable, interesting, funny and just downright FUN movies of all time. I just wish the film went on for hours and hours, cause when it's done you really miss the characters, they are good friends, like pals you'd love to hang with.

In addition that has already been said in the other review, the movie, the Deep advertises the island of Bermuda in the Caribbean. It shots the exotic marine life, the beaches and the way of life of its people. I don't know about witchcraft or voodoo, but the island seems so fascinating to see that one day, I'll come down and visit. I rate this movie & the production of the DVD to be excellent--the sound effects, in particular.

Excellent T.V. Series

This was one of the most endearing series ever to hit T.V. My wife who had never seen the show fell instantly in love. We both can't wait until more episodes are released. We have all that are currently available. Start churning them out. Great family entertainment and excellent for building values.

A lot more fun than you might think

The first video Barber of Seville I saw was a VHS with Cecilia Bartoli. So I was scared off by some of the reviews below. Having watched it, I agree with another review: the negative reviews are unfair.
True, early on the movements are distracting and there are moments where the crowd noise is a problem. But like any good drama, this staging draws you in. After the first scene or so, the extra action really adds to the production. If you like a static production where the singers just stand around and sing, then, no, you won't like this one. But if you like action that creates a grand spectacle, than you will experience this production more positively. On the whole, it works. I'm no expert in operatic historiography, but this production FEELS right for the genre.
I'm also no expert in singing, but the music in this production sounds fine to me.
As with "sinyung" I'm giving this 5 stars since it is "so much fun." I burst out laughing numerous times. Isn't that what a great comedy is to do? Yes, there are occasional flaws, but they are more than outweighed by the positive aspects.

A Magical Tale

Even if you didn't read the book, this movie is still great. It is great for kids to adults. Its a movie the whole family will enjoy. Although, some material in it may be inappropriate for little children, as there are some scary moments in it. I think its probably best for 8 and up. Otherwise, its a great movie you will want to watch over and over again. It's also got some great behind the scenes special features. This makes a great gift.

Gladiator - movie DVD cover picture
The Glory of Rome

Gladiator is a worthy successor to the great sword and sandal films of the past. With a classic story, great acting, spectacular cinematography, and an incredible score, Gladiator is a true epic in every sense of the word. Russel Crowe's and Joaquin Phoenix' performances are exceptional, and you find yourself despising Commodus(Phoenix) and actually cheering for Maximus(Crowe).
It is hard to watch the film and not be moved by the story, which at some points can drag, but is more than made up for by stunning batte and single combat scenes. The larger political story gives flesh to the main arc of the film--vengance. The film is fairly accurrate in its portrayal of the Roman gladiators, and the characters of Marcus Aurelius and Commodus are based on real emperors.
The DVD version which I am specifically writing about is excellent. The chapter segmentations are done very well and you are able to skip to every major scene without any fast forwarding. The bonus CD has many nice features, including all the trailers, cut footage, and a history of the gladiator games.
All in all, this is the best movie of the year, and if you are going to buy it, I highly suggest the DVD version, and if you don't have a DVD player, buy one to see this film...truly an instant classic.

It Speaks for Itself

Jack Nicholson has a certain character down pat, and has played that character with variations for the last decade. When Jack Nicholson plays obsessive-compulsive Melvin Udall, a reclusive writer with a routine so set that even the most minor deviation causes mental anguish, the results are continuously hilarious.
To be funny Jack requires other good actors, and in this movie Jack gets Helen Hunt as waitress and love interest Carol Connelly, Greg Kinnear as alternate lifestyle artist Simon Bishop, Cuba Gooding as Greg's agent Frank Sachs, and a wonderful little dog named Verdell.
As you would expect Melvin holds rigid opinions about everyone and everything. Fortunately he rarely has to interface with anyone at length, so his unreserved comments about others rarely offend others to the point where they refuse to deal with him, or worse, hit him. However, two events conspire to force Melvin to change.
First, Simon is beat up by a group of men robbing his house. Someone has to take care of Verdell the dog, and Melvin is forced into taking care of Verdell by Cuba Gooding. At first Melvin is completely unable to tolerate the dog, but the dog slowly wins Melvin over, putting a small chink into Melvin's curmudgeon armor.
The second event that upsets Melvin's rigid life is that Carol misses a day of work. Melvin must be served by Carol or his breakfast routine just is not right. Melvin finds Carol at her house and discovers that she is being kept at home by her sick son. Not letting anything stand in his way, Melvin arranges for a doctor to take care of Carol's son. As Melvin gets to know Carol better, her opinion of him starts to matter, and Melvin finds that he is falling in love with Carol. I leave the rest of this story to the viewer.
It is easy to find fault with Jack Nicholson in this role because this role was his with little or no effort. However, it matters not that this role fits with Jack Nicholson's character so well that you would think Jack is just like his character in real life, what matters is that Jack is perfectly believable. The change that we see in Jack throughout this movie and the interactions with the various characters that brings about this change is the heart of this movie. That watching the change is humorous and makes you feel good is just that much more benefit.
This movie is the rare funny, feel good movie that makes you want to watch it again. Perhaps the theme is just a bit trite, but we all want to believe in the core good of all people. Watch this movie and enjoy the easy smile it puts on your face.

Scooby Doo, Where Are You! - The Complete First and Second Seasons - movie DVD cover picture
It's about time!

Come on. You know Scooby Doo. I am just glad that they are finally putting together a "complete" something. Prior to this, there were a myriad of random episode groupings (and a DVD with the first 5 episodes).
The quality of the transfer is very good. The picture and sound are both crisp with few detectable analog artifacts.
The special features could perhaps be a little more entertaining. Episode commentaries (maybe even a little more adult-themed?) would have been fun.
Regardless, this DVD is definitely worth the purchase if you enjoy the reruns on Cartoon Network.
