Half Not Bad

"I may be dead, but I'm still prettier than you. Which is more than I can say for you." - Buffy to Master, Prophecy Girl
What is it about BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER we love about so much? Is it the kick-ass punching and kicking the Slayer does week by week? What makes us care so much about our Slayer and her Scooby friends? BUFFY is without a doubt the best damn show on television. Regardless if it's over. There are so many episodes worth watching over starting from the beginning. And the frist season of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER isn't half bad. It was interesting watching these characters grow up, like watching your favorite characters growing with each passing season. And what I love about the first season of BUFF THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, is that it had a great way of teen drama that deals with about this one girl, Buffy, who was often misunderstood. And she and her friends would always solve the mystery of Sunnydale and why things happen the way they do. The first half season was great, and it keeps getting better. Who could not possibly watch BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER and don't like it? Someone not human, that is for.

Finally, the silent Biblical masterpiece available on DVD!

"The King of Kings," Cecil B. DeMille's 1927 silent classic, is one of the greatest Biblical films from the man who has become Hollywood's master of the Biblical epic. And now Criterion has finally brought "The King of Kings" to the DVD market with this 2-disc set. Disc One contains the original 1927 release of the film, complete with a new, restored high-definition digital transfer and a new score composed by Donald Sosin. Disc Two features the shorter version of the film released in 1928 with a new restored digital transfer and two scores, including Hugo Riesenfeld's original score, and a new score composed by organist Timothy J. Tikker. "The King of Kings" is one of the greatest screen representations of the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. This film is well-written and directed. Many of the film's cast turn in outstanding performances here, including H.B. Warner as Jesus, Jacqueline Logan as Mary Magdalene, Victor Varconi as Pontius Pilate and Ernest Torrance as Simon Peter. "The King of Kings" is not just a great Biblical epic, it's one of the greatest movies of the silent era, and I'm glad to see this masterpiece finally available on DVD.

Bernadette Peters in Concert - movie DVD cover picture
A response to Mr. David Carlin's review below

Just for the record, Bernadette Peters was born on February 28, 1948, so she has many years to go before she reaches age 61. Also, she has said in interviews that she doesn't smoke or drink, is a vegetarian, exercises regularly, and takes dance and voice lessons. After all, she is an actor, and actors frequently refer to their bodies as their "instruments." If Bernadette's instrument is fine-tuned and in great shape, it isn't because she sold her soul to anybody. It's because she made a commitment to professionalism, and has led a disciplined life. And couldn't we all learn a thing or two from her?

Two Can Play That Game - movie DVD cover picture
Girl, you play more games than the NBA!

This is a highly amusing movie about the things women have to do to make their men behave. What makes it all so funny is the grain of truth in all that Shante (Vivica A. Fox) tells her audience via speaking directly into the camera a la Zack Morris of "Saved By The Bell".
Shante is 28, gorgeous, highly successful and always counseling and helping her 3 best girl friends Tracey, Karen and Deirdre (played with hilarity and aplomb by the divine Mo'Nique of UPN's The Parkers.) All three are in the throes of a messy relationship to which Shante tells them to kick their broke man to the curb. Until something similar happens to Shante and her man Keith. Now the shoes is on the other foot and Shante starts her 10-day plan to make her man behave.
It is funny, especially when Shante goes to church and participates in a too-close "church hug" with a man there in front of Keith's friend (Men love to gossip as much as women, says Shante, and she's right.)
As the days progress and Shante continues to be right, you wonder when she won't be. The law of averages says that time is coming, and you wonder if that will be before or after she reconciles with the wayward Keith (who is playing his own games, as the film reveals.)
It is hilarious and too true. Watch this for a good laugh.

Funny as Folk

While not as outrageously funny as Christopher Guest's previous documentary-styled comedies, A Mighty Wind has two things the others lacked: heart (supplied by subtle and outstanding performances by Catherine O'Hara and Eugene Levy) and an amazing soundtrack--dozens of original, slightly tongue-in-cheek folk ditties. It'll make you want to pick up an autoharp and harmonize your way to heaven.

Another nail in the coffin...

This film is excellent and reveals yet another piece of the puzzle which, when completed, shows the whole picture of the pathetic lunatic fringe on the right. I've concluded that it's time for we republicans to admit we made a tragic error in the 2000 election. We were mislead by the right wing media, in both radio and television, into such a rage about Bill Clinton that we would have accepted Mickey Mouse as our candidate if it would mean getting the White House away from the Democrats. It's now clear that Mickey Mouse would, indeed, have been a better choice than Dubya. Through clear and honest efforts like this film and Michael Moore's Farenheit 911, combined with other efforts in books such as that from Al Franken, Paul O'Neil, Bob Woodward, Richard Clark, etc. I now see that Bill Clinton was not a monster but, considering the environment we made for him, probably the best president of the 20th century. I read other reviews like that of "canadian girl in the USA" who says she's never seen the film but feels qualified to review it and my mind is further boggled. I click on her name and find that her only other review is that of the Elvis compilation album which she admits to listening to continually on an ongoing basis. If she knew the truth she'd know that longing for the days of Elvis, Richard Nixon, and Ronald Reagan translates into modern day terms that support John Kerry, not Dubya. In the Elvis days the lunatics such as the Christian Coalition of the radical right were isolated into churches in the back hills where they belong. Now their psychotic nonsense is nation wide due to advances in communication. Those mislead by this nonsense, like "candiangirlintheusa" are who we need to reach. If anyone knows her, buy her this film and see it with her. The only way to squash the lies is to reveal the truth and this film is a great first step. Buy it and share it!

Aladdin (Disney Special Platinum Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
It's Like Humour & Romance Mixed In 1!!

"Aladdin" has been an all-time favourite too millions of people around the world! The film was released into theaters in 1992 and came to video in 1993! This movie is a really great and colorful movie to add too any Disney collector's collection! Like "The Little Mermaid" and "Beauty and the Beast", "Aladdin" is a musical which includes humour and romance as well (Most Disney Classics are like that too!) The story takes place in the poor town of Agrabah, where "street rat" Aladdin (Scott Weinger) and his Monkey Abu live. They are poor and must steal food to survive on the streets. Aladdin falls in love with the Sultan's daughter Jasmine (Linda Larkin) and the two eventually become friends. By royal orders, It is time for Jasmine to get married (and it must be too a prince ONLY!) She does not want to rush and wants to wait for her true love too come.
Jafar (Jonathan Freeman) is the Sultan's "trustworthy" Vizier who wants to rule the world and gain the power of being a Sultan However, he needs the "magic lamp" too do this, so he gets Aladdin to get the lamp for him in the "Cave of Wonders". Aladdin finds the lamp and meets the famous and humourus "Genie of the Lamp" (Robin Williams) The Genie changes Aladdin to a prince so he can gain the love of Princess Jasmine. Jasmine and Aladdin fall in love together, but when Jafar's sidekick parrott Iago (Gilbert Gottfried) gets ahold of the lamp and Jafar rules Agrabah, it is going to take Aladdin's courage and bravery (With the help of the Genie) to defeat Jafar and save Agrabah!
Back in 1992, The film became the highest-grossing animated film earning over $200 million internationally (!) The film also won Academy Awards for Best Song ("A Whole New World") and Best Original Score. That's how popular the film became! In fact, the film and characters were so popular that it came out with 2 sequels: "Return of Jafar" in 1994 and "The King Of Theives" in 1996. There was also a TV series named "Aladdin" which aired from 1993-1995. Who can forget the famous quote "Jafar! Jafar! He's Our Man, If He Can't Do It.....GREAT! This film is definetly a film that will entertain the entire family! Hopefully, it will be re-released onto video soon so the people who never had the chance to get a copy of the film are able to get one! 90 Minutes.

The Adventures of Captain Marvel [Serial] - movie DVD cover picture
Greatest Serial

The 40s serial "The Adventures of Captain Marvel" has to be the "Greatest Serial Ever Made." The special effects, for its tme, are outstanding. The flying scenes stood the test of time until the first Superman movie.
Many in the cast do a fine job. Tom Tyler makes an excellent Captain Marvel. He looks the part and he demonstrates the great athletic ability required of the part. The actor playing Billy Batson leaves a lot to be desired. He delivers his lines as a Junior High student would do in a school play. The "bad guys" are just great. They fill the bill in typical 1940s serial style.
By today's standards, the plot is childish, but for its time and targeted audience it must have proved to be exciting from week to week. Anyone with a penchant for memoribelia would surely want this video in their collection.
