HOT GUYS - SWEET STORY

This movie, GRANDE ECOLE and NEVERLAND (the gay-themed Peter Pan movie - not the Johnny Depp movie!) have the sexiest guys ever. I highly recommend these three movies if you are into extremely beautiful men and explicitly gay-themed independent movies. LATTER DAYS is a bit on the soap-operatic side, but the other two are much more sophisticated/stylish. These are my top three.

"I'm NOT An Artist, Thank God"

These last two words were what SHOULD have been added to the last line of the film to make this excellent movie even better. John Cusack, in one of his better roles, plays an aspiring playwright during the 1920s, and considers himself to be a great one--although he later learns that he really isn't. Like his Marxist-inclined intellectual friend Flender (Rob Reiner, looking very much the part), Cusack thinks that art is of supreme importance, perhaps even more important than human life itself. Discussing art in a Greenwich Village cafe, Reiner gives the analogy of a burning building: if you could rush in and save only one of two things--a human being or the last known copy of Shakespeare's works, which would you save? His answer, of course, is Shakespeare's works. Why say such a horrible thing? Because to intellectuals, art "lives." You'd have no right to "deprive the world of this great art" just to save the life of "an anonymous human being," he says. Cusack agrees. But this belief is put to the test when in order to save a work of art, gangster Cheech (well-played by Chazz Palmentieri) actually commits murder. Cusack then realizes that no work of art is worth a human life after all. At this point, Cusack says, "I'm NOT an artist."

A Great Musical For The WHole Family!

SCROOGE (Albert Finney) the musical version of the Broadway stage play written by Leslie Briscuss (Hook, Santa Clause The Movie) is a great adaptation to the classic Charles Dickens story known throughout the world. The songs are memorable and will keep you singing long after you finish the film.
Starring Academy Award winner Albert Finney (Erin Brockovich, Traffic) as the lead miserly sole and circumvented by an amazing cast of creepy and heartwarming characters.Bob Marley is brilliantly portrayed by Sir Alec Guiness (Star Wars, A Bridge Too Far). The Ghost Of Christmas Past is played by Edit Evans (The Gambler, A Kiss And A Rose)The Ghost Of Christmas Present is played by Kenneth Moore (The Spaceman and King Arthur, A Tale Of Two Cities )Bob Crachet is played by David Collings (The Story Of David, Dark Towers)The Nephew is played magically by Michael Medwin (Shoestring, Fanny and Elvis)
Thank You Very Much, Father Christmas, and I Hate People are some of my favorite songs on here. But the one that brigs out the spirit of the season is I Like Life! Very well done film and directed by Ronald Neame (Hopscotch, The Poseiden Adventure, Metero) this film is another must in your Holiday movie collection. I wish this was on DVD and had a lot of extras! (12-22-02)

THE BEST MOVIE IN THE WORLD

The movie was very touching and poignant. I didn't appreciate the "porn star" aspect of the film, but felt it made a great love story. Elisha Cuthbert really shined as a fairly new actress to the big screen. There was a believable chemistry between the two stars and the soundtrack was equally impressive. I would high recommend this movie (to adults only).

The best version I've ever seen!

I guess I'm the only one disappointed in the Masterpiece Theater adaptation of Great Expectations, but I was. Ioan Gruffudd is a fine actor, but he is no Pip. The only aspect of his portrayal I liked was his devotion to Estella. Even his horror at discovering the identity of his real benefactor was too "subtle" and too short-lived.
I was even more disappointed in Charlotte Rampling's Miss Havisham. She was too young, too soft-spoken, and too kindly -- not at all cold and distant -- and not at all manipulative. And the scene of her incineration is terribly overdone.
From the beginning ... in which we are told of Pip's visit to the graveyard ... to the end ... which is not at all in keeping with the spirit of Dickens' ambiguous ending ... this was a true disappointment.
The Anthony Calf, Anthony Hopkins production for the Disney Channel is far superior. I wish that one were offered for sale.

One of the Great Musical Classics

I was just a teenager when I first saw this movie, I remember lining up for hours just to get a ticket. Now that I have a copy of my own, I get to re-live the energy that I felt all those years ago. This would have to be one of the great big screen musicals of all time. One of those movies that you can watch over and over and still love it as if you were seeing it for the first time. Life is not complete without a copy of this video, can't wait for the DVD version.

Stunning Movie

First, I would like to review the film. I am only 14, and my dad made me watch it on television. I agreed because it was good excuse to stay up until 3:00 in the morning. He grew up only miles away from the setting, and was there during this time period. He says it really depicts what life was like then.
The movie is great, and has supurb acting. I'm sure you will see all about that in the reviews, so I will get to my next point...
As for all of you agianst the movie simply because of what you think is racism: I think many of you fail to see, or just down want to believe the truth. Sure Americans killed many Vietnamese, but the Vietnamese captured soldiers and did do what is depicted in the movie. Perhaps it was a selective depiction of us as the "good guys", and them as the "bad guys", but the movie wasnt to inform you about the Vietnamese. It shows you how people are affected by war, and why it is such a horrible thing. It made me extremely anti-war now, and so I think it conveys a wonderful message. As for Russian roulette... that was to show how "Nick" loses his sanity. He was scared and couldn't bare to do it for the Vietnamese, but his quality of life was so ruined, he began to think it didn't matter...
This is a great movie... don't believe the narrowminded reviewers that gave it one, two, or maybe three stars!

Compelling & well done

Okay, must admit Penn and Sarandon aren't two of my favorite actors. For that matter, I can't imagine someone like Tim Robbins creating high art and social commentary. But this film has proven me wrong on all levels. Not only is Robbins script and direction sterling, but both Penn and Sarandon are flawless in their portrayals or a true story. Sharp, smart, and never once does this film pander. Great filmmaking all around.
