Russ Meyer's Up! - movie DVD cover picture

Russ Meyer, the Fellini of the sex-industry, has finally started to release his legendary films on DVD. The first series of his cult-classics to hit the digital format are MONDO TOPLESS, CHERRY HARRY AND RAQUEL, and RUSS MEYER'S UP! Although all three of these films are essential viewing, RUSS MEYER'S UP! is probably the best one, and a perfect place to start for both novices and aficionados alike!
RUSS MEYER'S UP! starts off in the inimitable Russ Meyer style... German sex-fiend Adolph Schwartz (who bares an almost uncanny resemblance to another famous Adolph) is mysteriously murdered when an unseen assassin places a piranha into his bath tub! In the meantime, a beautiful and well-endowed woman is seen jogging into town... The rest of the film is basically your standard whodunit, sparkling with witty and hilarious dialogue (co-written by famous film critic Roger Ebert), and punctuated with Russ Meyer's trademark touches... Flashy editing, top-notch direction, visual puns, indescribably humor, graphic sex and excessive violence clash together in one of Meyer's most entertaining spoofs. And just in case you get confused, Kitten Natividad shows up occasionally as an all-nude Greek Chorus, to recite the facts and pose open-ended questions, the whole time speaking in Meyer's trademark Shakespearean accent and ready to break out into an orgasm at any moment! The highlight of the flick occurs when Janet Wood and Raven De La Croix engage in what has to be one of the most memorable fight sequences to grace exploitation cinema! Bosomania indeed!
And, of course, it wouldn't be a Russ Meyer film without a colorful and offbeat cast of characters! Edward Schaaf as the aforementioned kinky nazi, Robert McLane as the sensible Paul, Janet Wood as the Sweet li'l Alice, Monty Bane as the perverted sheriff Homer Johnson, and the magnificent Raven De La Croix as the mysterious Margo Winchester are just some of the unusual personalities that populate Russ Meyer's twisted flick!
Needless to say, RUSS MEYER'S UP! is an essential purchase for all you cult-film fans out there! This was Meyer's second to last major film (BENEATH THE VALLEY OF THE ULTRA-VIXENS was his swan-song), and by now, the celebrated auteur had perfected his directorial style! For intelligent, hilarious, and witty X-Rated entertainment, you can't possibly go wrong!

New Classic

This is one of a new line of (future) classic movies of the last 5-10 years. This movie blew my mind the first time I saw it and hasn't disappointed in subsequent viewings. The movie is in reverse chronological order (if you didn't know already) and tells the story of a man who has no short term memory who is looking for his wife's murderer. The film has a couple twists throughout, but the main course is the ending (or should I say beginning).
This DVD is full of extra features as you can see by the list that ... provides. The best of which is a version of the movie in the "correct" chronological order. This version is almost as good as the original movie! This is like getting 2 movies for the price of one.
I will admit that the menu's are a bit annoying in the sense that it can be difficult to get to some items, but there are navigation guides out there if you need help and you will get the hang of it.
It basically comes down to this: if you like your movies on the edge, innovative and little off kilter, this is the movie for you. If you into more straight forward flicks, then you should probably stay away. All in all, this was one of thebest of 2001 and I say A+ and highly recommend this movie!

Several movies rolled into one

This was a great film about different people, and how their stories, or situations all come together during the course of one day. It's a film about forgiveness, and dealing with everyday problems. Every character in this film needs healing in one way or another.
The acting and direction was great. Tom Cruise gave one of the best performances of 1999 and should have won that Oscar! I've never seen him so possessed by his character before. John Reilly gave a great performance also as a very spiritual police officer. William H. Macy gives a great performance as a man who is looking for love anywhere he can find it. Philip Seymore Hoffman is wonderful as Jason Robard's caretaker in the film. Julianne Moore and Robard's were both great! Every performance in this film was heartfelt and worthy of praise from both critics and audiences. PT Anderson is a great director, and certainly needs to write and direct more films.
And finally, the ending....WOW! What an ending! I loved the whole frogstorm thing. I rewound that a few times just for the sheer joy of it. LOVED IT!!!!
All of this is great, but I feel that some of it could have been trimmed down a bit. It does run over three hours, and at times, certain scenes can become cloying, as they seem to just run on and on at a pointless rate. Some of those scenes just don't need to be as loooong as they are! That's my only complaint...well, that and the EXCESSIVE foul language. The F word does become annoying at a certain point.
Not for everyone, but if you have an open mind, you will enjoy this treasure of a film!

AWESOME!!! The best movie of 1999.

Came out during the same time " The Phantom Menace" came out but that one was ok but this is far superior in many ways. The plot deals with " Neo" ( Keanu Reeves) who is a nobody worker that gets involved with a Cybersystem called " The Matrix", he is now in the trap. Truely Outstanding!!! a masterpiece that you must own on DVD.
Recommendations: The Fifth Element, Total Recall, Starship Troopers, Robocop, Star Wars, Blade Runner, Metropolis, Dark City, Ghost in the Shell and Con Air.

"This has to be one of the best movies EVER!"

Well, I wasn't expecting this. I love Pixar's movies, but this was just awesome! What a brilliant movie! I can't stop raving about it to everybody. You just totally forget you're watching a computer-animated feature! Great story, funny when it wants to be, exciting like nothing you've ever seen! I was genuinely THRILLED! I didn't want the movie to end. Pixar just keeps raising the bar. Has to be one of the best movies I have seen in the past 10 years, no question. Did I say I LOVE this movie! It's like nothing I've ever seen! I mean, I loved the "Toy Story" movies, and "Monster's Inc.", but this, this is something else entirely. I cannot recommend more strongly this film to anyone who loves movies! On a scale of 1 to 10, it is a 12! Great job, Pixar! You are one of the reasons people are still enthusiastic about movies!

Pain, suffering, dangerous, yet so pain-stakingly real

I liked this season. Yes it made me cry nearly every eppy and it was very intense. All of it was. From Buffy rising from the grave, her destructive relationship with spike just to "feel", Dawns cry for help, Willow's addiction. All of it plays true in everyday life. It wouldn't make since for everything to be "a bed of roses" so to speak once Buffy was reserected. The season made since. It was darker than any other season yes. But it was now that I have looked back it one of the best and most emotional. Plus gotta love the musical eppy "Once More With Feeling" and the cool extras.
