Hannibal - movie DVD cover picture

I loved SILENCE OF THE LAMBS & when I read the book of HANNIBAL a while back I started pining for the movie release. HANNIBAL surpasses its predecessor in terms of panache & graphic gore. Anyone expecting Oscar material will be disappointed (& nauseated) with this, but I loved it. Lecter is relatively "normal" in this movie, which I feel makes him all the more terrifying. The plot revolves around one of Lecter's surviving victims, Mason Verger (the always excellent Gary Oldman, in gruesome makeup) plotting to capture Hannibal & feed him to his carnivorous wild pigs, as payment to Lecter feeding his face to a pack of dogs. When Clarice Starling (Juliannne Moore) learns of this she sets out to warn Lecter. Ridley Scott scores another bullseye after his success with GLADIATOR. His expected visual style complements Hopkins' performance well. Moore meanwhile, manages to step into the role of Starling and make it her own. My only quibble is that Oldman had his name removed from the credits supposedly because he wanted second billing. And for you gorehounds there are several gruesome scenes to savor, including Hopkins introducing Ray Liotta to the pleasures of "brain food". Yum.

I hear we are going to get season 5 in a "non-time compressed" form. Lets hope that`s true. At least we get one season at the correct speed.

The Dish is about Australia's involvement in the first Lunar Landing in 1969. The movie revolves around a team of Aussie larakins and their commitment to NASA in bringing the first pictures of man on the moon. Based on a true story Sam Neil whom is known from Jurasic Park shines once again in this role as the telescopes director. Produced by the same team that made "The Castle" this movie is essential viewing, with a great soundtrack and extra features on the DVD.

A masterpiece of truth-telling artistry...

Visually delicious and innovative, yes, but never mind: this is a masterpiece of truth-telling artistry.
Puts the first glimpses of the young sage under a well-focused pop culture macroscope, and every seeker i know who saw it wanted to watch it on infinite loop.
Gentle warning: this film requires extra humility from people who think they don't have any big lessons left to learn, extra patience from those who get restless sitting still and listening, and extra courage from those who are so jaded that they resist being stirred to dream of awakening.

You must remember this

Casablanca's reputation as the classic American film is well-deserved. There is a beautiful and affecting romance, some war-time intrigue, and most of all, an incredibly elegant and witty screenplay. Ingrid Bergman, Humphrey Bogart, Claude Rains, and Paul Henreid give legendary performances. I particularly love Rains as the amoral Captain Louie. I love it when he shuts down Cafe Rick's (he's shocked! SHOCKED!) for "gambling" and collects his winnings in the same breath. The minor roles are also memorable, particularly Peter Lorre as a pathetic, murderous "exit visa" bandit. Casablanca's greatness lies in its synergy of romance, intrigue, comedy, drama, music, acting, and direction. This despite the turmoil and confusion during filming. It was not known which man Ilsa (Bergman) would end up with, so Bergman was told to play it "in between." This ambiguity ironically gives Casablanca its greatness -- if ever there was a bittersweet perfect ending to a movie, Casablanca is it.
This two-disc special edition has a documentary of Humphrey Bogart, narrated by his wife Lauren Bacall. The children of Bergman and Bogart (Pia Lindstrom and Stephen Bogart) also narrate a documentary about the filming of the movie. There are silent deleted scenes and outtakes.
It's not even a question. See this film.

And now for something completely different

This is completely different from Monty Python. Two of the MP veterans have written a series of half hour programs in the vein of classical British boy's adventure stories. The cast are drama actors who do not ham it up or exaggerate their characters (except for the two MP veterans).

What makes the stories funny is the twists that are thrown in at frequent intervals. You have to have an intimate knowledge of British culture and social institutions prior to 1930 to spot these twists and appreciate them. You will smile and mildly chuckle instead of rolling on the floor laughing as you did for Monty Python.

In some ways these remind me of the early Carry On movies with their low key humor.

Team America - World Police (Special Collector's Widescreen Edition) - movie DVD cover picture

This movie had moments of LOL/fall down humor, and then many moments you questioned what you were watching. First off mattonettes are hard to control let alone make them do some of the stuff that they do is amazing. There is one scene that is a reminder of what your Barbie and Ken really used to do. I laughed so hard. That is a funny part. The music is not as good as the South Park movie, which i have in my cd player often.

Also the celebrities that include are really funny! This movie left me with a new movie quote. "MATT DAMON" Watch and you'll know why!! :O

Anamorphic DVD (What it means)

This movie is great and I will order the DVD version. I saw a review giving a bad note saying it is not in widescreen version but in standard version. The DVD is in anamorphic widescreen. It means it can be seen in Standard and Widescreen by toggling the "Pan&Scan" and "Letterbox" settings on your DVD player. Please refer to your manual for more information about this setting.

Fox Lorber did a barely competent job of issuing this movie on DVD, but at least it's available (alas, unlike "Masculine-Feminine"). The least Fox could do is keep the damn thing in print, so that people who want to own it don't have to pay $70.00 for a used copy. This is one of the most exciting films made in the last fifty years; it's not perfect, but it's an utterly fascinating milestone in the history of the cinema. Fox Lorber, get this thing back in print. Shame on you.

Great to See if Seeking the Real Cuba

My mother was born in La Habana and since then has returned to find her home land in Castro's hands. When our family watched this movie, 6 Cubans, we saw what Cuba had become and we were relieved that it was portrayed as it really is, beyond the Elian Gonzalez rallys. I hope everyone who sees this movie will be grateful for where they are in the world. Because this is the truth of what families go through. Leaving the country? Keeping "Faith" in a dead end in government? This may sound like I'm a Angry Cuban, but I'm not, I'm happy this was released to the people so they can see Cuba
