Gang of Roses - movie DVD cover picture
Lisa Raye is packed!

Gang of Roses tries to be the female "Posse" but these "Bad Girls" are in a movie so hysterically inaccurate that you can't help but laugh out loud watching this serious western. I wish Mike, Crow And Tom Servo were still around. Gang of Roses would be perfect viewing on the Satellite of Love. This movie ranks up there with Wild Wild Wild, World of Batwoman and Manos the Hands of Fate as prime MST3K material.
A gang of cowgirls is out to get buried treasure in the old west. There's the plot ripped straight from Mario Van Peebles' "Posse". Sadly this film lacks any of the historical context and story of Van Peebles film or its attention to detail. (Van Peebles actually makes a cameo here, but I actually think they just cut a small scene of "Posse" out and spliced it in. If you look closely the frames don't even match up with the rest of the movie.) Maybe the Gang of Roses needs to start running again. Trial lawyers are soon to be on their trail.
Gang of Roses has so many blaring historical errors that it comes off as a campy farce instead of a serious western. The gang is a group of three "sassy" sistas and one Asian woman. That's right, sassy independent black women and a "down" Chinese woman complete with cornrows in the 1890s old west. These women are real trailblazers, because they made a whole lot more progress than Elizabeth Cady Staton, Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman and Lucreita Mott did in the same time period. These sistas and Chinese woman were actual hard-core feminists in a period when the movement of women's suffrage was just getting started. Someone needs to tell these women they don't even have the right to own property or vote yet.
If the jackass executive who greenlit this project took the time to read an elementary school history book before filming of this move started, they would have taken the pages of this screenplay and flushed them down the toilet. Then they would have sent the writer of said script back to elementary school to finish their education. Maybe this time the kindergarten dropout would actually graduate grade school before starting work on another silly psuedo-feminist screenplay. The details in this movie do not fit in any historical film about the 1890's save for Westerns made in Bizarro World like this one. In the 1890's there were never:
Perfectly arched eyebrows, manicured hands. Oh yeah, let's not forget the make-up that stays perfect in one hundred degree Texas heat.
Clean, oiled braids and perfectly styled hair and weaves. Only on Bizarro World are there hair salons available for black women to get their kitchen cleaned up when Madame C.J. Walker hasn't been born to invent the straightening comb yet.
No White people for miles except for one man who is sheriff of a predominantly black town. Last time I checked a history book the United States was at least 70% White in the 1890s.
Women wearing leather pants. Women wearing pants and men not ridiculing them for it. Women wearing leather pants period. In the 1890's most women wore ankle-length skirts and dresses. Only one woman is know to frequently wear pants in the West during this period and that was the legendary "Calamity" Jane Canary. Even though it was part of her unique style, other cowboys of the period often scrutinized her.
LisaRaye's white leather costume staying white even though she sleeps in the desert. Hey, why is she wearing a white leather costume in the old west if she wants to blend in? White is a color that makes you a BIG easy target if you're an "outlaw" in the dusty old west. Oh well, this is Bizarro World where women wear pants. White is like black here.
LisaRaye being a knife thrower who wears a white leather outfit. Like she'd stand a chance wearing white in a room full of guys carrying revolvers with throwing knives.
LisaRaye having more knives than a Ginsu factory. I guess She called in the last thirty minutes of the infomercial and got the bonus paring knife set and a set of Ginsu's s great teak knives too.
Women in the 1890's wearing low-cut midriff bearing shirts. In this conservative era showing some shoulder and a little too much ankle got you branded as "loose". But this is Bizarro World where people from over a hundred years ago still dress like the women of today.
The Chinese cowgirl. Eh, this is the 1890's. Most Chinese women who immigrated to America during this period were extremely conservative in their dress and mannerisms. They didn't wear outfits with bare midriffs and cornrow hairstyles, nor did they act so aggressively.
The map. For a secret map depicting a secret location, just about everyone had a copy of it.
Macy Gray's part. See reason above. I'm still scratching my head about this one.
The final frames of the film. What was the purpose of the black guy on the horse?
The acting in this movie is some of the worst I've seen since Dolemite. Only Stacey Dash and the asian actress perform well. LisaRaye tries her best, but the material is just too campy for a serious actress like her to make work. (I'm still figuring out why she's on All of Us, she sticks out like a sore thumb in that awful sitcom) Lil' Kim is just Lil Kim hip-hop diva here. Bobby Brown's acting is so bad I realize he needs his Gumby haircut, genie pants, and dancers to ever give a good performance again. Macy Gray should just stick to records.
Unless you're looking to have a MST3K party with your friends and you need a film to rip, avoid this Lifetime Television for Bizarro Women pseudo feminist claptrap.

The best boy and his dog movie out there!

I was a little skecptical of the movie at first. I mean, I hadn't really watched a kiddie movie for quite awhile. But this movie is more than just a kiddie movie, it's one for all ages. Adults and maybe some teens will find it just as enjoyable as kids.
This movie stars Frankie Muniz, who is as adorable as the dog, as an only child living in wartimes in a small southern town called Yazoo. His next door neighboor is the most famous ball player in all of Yazoo, Dink (played by a convincing Luke Wilson). Dink is his only friend, since all the other boys there treat him like crap. I never knew kids could be so awful, I mean so incredibly awful. But soon Dink has to go off to the war and Willy (or Billy, I never really did catch his name) is left alone without any playmates.
You can kind of figure out for yourself what happens after, but I don't want to spoil anymore of this wonderful movie! Besides great performances by Frankie Muniz, Luke Wilson, not to mention Eddie the dog from 'Frasier', who plays Skip, Kevin Bacon and Diane Lane also turn in great performances as Willy's parents.
See this movie with the whole family. Trust me, every single person will walk away happy!

A Delicious Piece of Christmas Cheese

Yeah - it's kinda silly in some ways and yes - it shamelessly goes for the tear ducts at the end, but this really is a pleasure through and through. The cast is great (love that Rosie Clooney) and the sets, musical numbers, and sentimentality all work to get you right where they want you to be. And that's a good place. It's unthinkable to not have this on your annual holiday viewing list.

Great Historical drama

This is actually an interesting film and the DVD contains as an extra a documentary on the Cuban Missile Crisis.
It is now some time since the Cuban Missile Crisis so that probably most people have forgotten what it was about. In the early 1960's the United States had a relatively week army but an immense strength in nuclear weapons. The Soviet Union had a limited number of long range nuclear weapons but an immensely strong army. It was generally conceded by the US military that it could conquer Western Europe in 48 hours. The military balance was based on the threat of the US using nuclear weapons if the peace of Western Europe was threatened.
In 1961 the United States sponsored an invasion of Cuba by some dissident exiles. This expedition failed. The Soviet Union started to build up Cuba's defences to prevent another invasion. At the same time short range ballistic missiles with nuclear weapons were put on the island which brought most US cities into target range. It was the discovery of these weapons that led to the missile crisis.
The film covers the 13 days of the crisis and thus the name. The difficulty was what to do. Kennedy's military advisors suggested a military strike to destroy the missiles and then a follow up invasion of Cuba. The basis of this was a belief that the US nuclear superiority would guarantee that the Soviets would not retaliate. Kennedy however was concerned that this might not happen. He was familiar with the history of the First World War. In that conflict a series of "correct" military decisions had led to a senseless mass horror. If the US invaded Cuba it would be easy for the Soviets to seize Berlin. Could the US then use nuclear weapons? One would think not.
As a result Kennedy set up a broad-based set of advisors who came up with the strategy of a blockade. However each of the 13 days of the crisis set up challenges which might have at any time led to a conflict. If spy planes were shot down, should the US retaliate? If the US fired at Russian transport ships bringing in weapons would escorting submarines retaliate?
The Cuban missile crisis was the high point of Kennedy's presidency when he made objectively the correct decision against military advice. It later turned out that the local Soviet Commanders had short range nuclear weapons and were authorised to use them if an invasion had occurred. An invasion could have been catastrophic.
The film accurately describes the time and all of the actors are excellent. The film also does not try to play the audience for idiots and the dramatic pacing is good. One of the best historical films in years. Incidentally the DVD contains an excellent documentary on the crisis. Many documentaries are static and rely on visual imagery. This is a good punchy talking heads documentary which conveys information quickly and accurately. A great package.

Where will they go next.

I look upon final fantasy as I did with Tron(remember that one?). While tron did not do that great at the box office, it was a ground breaking movie for it's time with the CG effects. I feel the same is true with final fantasy. This is the first time a full length movie had everything done by CGI and an effort was made to have the characters look very real. As far as the story goes, It wasn't the greatest, but it wasn't bad either. My biggest complaint was some of the dialog was too simple. In my opinion this is the future of filmmaking. It make take another generation, but it will happen; and for that reason alone I think having the DVD in your collection is worth it.

Another Brilliant Kauffman Flick!

If you thought that Being John Malkovich, Adaptation and Human Nature were all just luck, maybe this one will prove you wrong. Following up his best commercially successful film to date, Adaptation, Eternal Sunshine does not disappoint. Besides a brilliant plot and storyline, Kauffman and Gondry team up to provide another truly original film with creative editing, shots, and casting. Jim Carrey once again proves that he can hold his own in dramatic roles, and Kate Winslett provides a perfect counter balance. They don't dress her up too pretty and she pulls off being a 'normal' girl (better than Diaz in Being John). I don't really think that Kirsten Dunst's role was necessary at all but who am I to argue with Kauffman. Anyhow... Overall, one of the best movies I have seen since Adaptation and it is a must see. My friends and I were talking about it for hours after, and I still can't stop thinking about it... I will be until I see it again!
