Love at First Bite - movie DVD cover picture
Great premise, carried out in grand style.

I know this movie inside and out, having seen it on cable a million times when I was a kid. The concept is a scream! George Hamilton plays a rather hip Count Dracula and Arte Johnson his ingratiating sidekick Renfield. Drac falls madly in love with Cindy Sondheim, played by Susan St. James, a high-powered New York supermodel. He despairs of ever having her for himself, but fate deals him a lucky blow couched in misfortune: The local Communist bigwigs, who desire to convert Drac's castle into a training camp for Nadia Comaneci and her teammates, give Drac and Renfield the boot. The logical choice? To escape to America and track down Cindy in New York City, which Drac summarily does. Luckily, she falls in love with him, but before Drac can make her one of the undead, Cindy's high-strung boyfriend Jeffrey Rosenberg, played by Richard Benjamin, interferes. Jeffrey's grandfather -- the famous vampire hunter Dr. Van Helsing, who had been Drac's nemesis -- died without ever destroying his undead quarry, and Jeffrey is determined to finish what his grandfather started. His attempts to do so backfire hilariously! In the end -- and I was so happy for them -- Drac and Cindy make good their escape to spend the rest of their "lives" together.
No matter how often I watched this movie, it never lost its appeal or its comedy. There aren't too many movies out there that are blessed with this gift.
P.S. Was the part of the wino played by Richard Mulligan of SOAP and EMPTY NEST fame? If so, I didn't see his name listed in the credits.

(...)this movie is pretty sweet. Where else can you get Kung-fu, Porn, & Mormon Missionaries. This is the best movie ever it is so funny & has a heart. I think Trey Parker is a genius & he is pretty hot too. Plus Matt Stone's performance as Dave the Lighting Guy is the best. I can't wait till this dvd comes out so I can see all the special features. Brilliant

A little bit dated, but overall, you gotta love this movie. Really brilliant, very anti-establishment, pretty radical especially considering when it came out in the late 1960's...
Enjoy!

Tea With Mussolini - movie DVD cover picture
It's more than tea with trumpets with Mussolini!

Grand, eloquent, exotic, touching! Good descriptives for the Franco Zeffirelli film "Tea with Mussolini"!
Considered autobiographical of Zeffirelli himself, this film soars--and one can readily see Franco's cinematic touches--not only with the all-star cast (a trite expression but nonetheless apt) but with the storyline itself.
Set just shortly before World War II in Florence, the movie showcases a group of proper British ladies (where else would they be but in Italy?) who seem
perfectly at peace here. They have undertaken the care of a young outcast boy and set about to teach him proper British ways. They interact as if there were no cares. After all, they have the personal world of Il Duce that no harm will come to them should the war descend. And descend it does and only the naive (Maggie Smith) could believe in the integrity of Mussolini! These expatriate Brits choose to stay in Italy and, of course, the worst case scenario transpires. They are caught in the crossfires of the war machine. The other ladies in the film include Cher, Joan Plowright, Judi Dench, and Lily Tomlin.
Cher scores one of her best roles as the lone American in the film, a friend of the British ladies, and as the war continues, even her money and influence are no longer enough to save her. Her Jewish background does not settle well with the Fascists there, who are more than eager to please Herr Hitler and his war machine.
Zeffirelli fills his film with typical cinematic beauty--whether it be in the actors, the acting, the scenery, the score, it's all superb. His ability to fuse the drama with appropriate amounts of comic relieve also add to the film, and his reputation. Hats off to the entire movie company!

Battlestar Galactica (2003 Miniseries) - movie DVD cover picture
A Different Style of Sci Fi

Tight, sharp writing and an excellent cast makes this show shine.

The 'documentary' camera work took a little getting used to, but it didn't take long and even though I don't normally like that form, it works well for BS Galactica. The sets are detailed and very well done, the lighting suits the tone and mood perfectly, and the music is distinctive and adds (not detracts) from the show. Sound effects are subdued which makes for a much more 'realistic' experience. The computer graphics are excellent.

Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell are perfect for their roles. Olmos does not swagger and yell, thankfully, but plays Adama with a very dry (and rarely seen) sense of humor and quiet reserve which is far more effective. McDonnell gives enough self-doubt and fear in her performance to make her character real. Michael Hogan does a terrific job in the supporting role of Col. Tigh as does James Callis as Balter.

As for the old BSG vs. new BSG, both can be enjoyed for what they are. The original, which I watched and enjoyed when much younger (has it really been that long ago?) was a family show with humor and sparkling, evil robots.

BSG 2003 is more of an adult show with less obvious humor and complex storylines. It is as much about the character's interactions as it is their escape from the Cylons. The character's flaws make them more interesting.

This is NOT for the kiddies- they wouldn't understand it, anyway. Get them the original, then bring out the new miniseries after they go to bed....and enjoy!

Great love story

This is one of the best coming out movies I have seen of all time. Scott Neal and Glen Berry did a wonderful job in this movie. The scenes between Linda Henry and Glen Berry were awesome too. For anyone out there that wants to see a good coming of age, coming out movie, Beautiful Thing is the movie to see.

Evil Dead (Special Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
The best horror film of all time!!

Ok,throughout time this one has lost the impact it had back then in the 80's and 90's, unlike The Exorcist, but that's mainly because of it's incredibly low budget. Modern era fans most likely will be turned off by the "cheesy gore effects", but true die hard horror fans classify this one as not only one of the most brutal, visceral experiences you may have, but also the most engrossing, mind-warping experience of cinematography.
It has been said a lot of times, but Sam Raimi truly titled himself a genius director with this gem. With a stunning budget of $300,000, he created the most original setups, an incredibly eerie and scary atmosphere, coupled with some of the most imaginative camera angles, gore fx and sound fx available. This movie is everything a horror movie should be: incredibly intense since the beggining, well-crafted suspense scenes, very creepy music, demons that are truly scary, and a huge amount of gore (dismemberments, heads chopped off, and an unbelievable self-eating scene!)
All in all, a true horror masterpiece in all sense of the words. Evil Dead is an experience you don't wanna miss...

Mahoromatic - Automatic Maiden - Combat Maid (Vol. 1) - movie DVD cover picture
Life is but a Dream...

...and dreams should be grand. The folks who pan this series for being too ecchi or geared towards teens completely missed the boat, and should stick to pre-packaged, pre-chewed pap like Pokemon. Here's the deal (SPOILER WARNING! SPOILER WARNING!) Mahoro is a combat 'droid, with little over a month to live. The leader of her group, Vesper, gives her a choice: Remain a combad droid and die in a month, or life as she chooses... for as a normal 'person' she's only got 398 days. She's screwed either way. She chooses to work as a maid for Suguru Misato, to attone for something she did in her combat days. Just get the whole 2 seasons, folks, and ignore the naysayers -- they wanted pre-chewed toyetic garbage. Mahoromatic is a very well done story that can be delightfully funny, and heart-wrenchingly painful, sometimes at the same time. Mahoro herself is far, far more beautiful inside than her body is. She is the soul of an entire race, which now also knows ours, having lived, for a brief, gorgeous year, as a human.

I miss this movie!

Just watch it. Who give's a rat's hindquarters about deep hidden meanings and symbolism? It ain't here, OK? Beetlejuice is simply a highly enjoyable film, funny as hell and completely bizarre ... but in a totally followable and almost delightful sort of way. Good acting, great special effects, and a script that pretty much keeps you guessing throughout the film. Definitley worth owning!
PS: Amazon, you're sleeping on the job! Not one but TWO "reviews" give away the entire film, including the ending...
