Great music for a great movie

If you like blues or feeling the blues then get this movie. I like the 'selling of the soul' not for 'rock n roll' but in this case, 'blues'.
'blues ain't nothing but a good man feeling bad' I love the portrayal of the devil. A real smooth operator.
The guitar playing by Stevie Vai and Ry Cooder are the best I have ever heard ANYWHERE. As good as Jimi Hendrix? I think so. I have always preferred the Delta Blues over Juilliard music, anyways.....

Everything I expected from a video showing a fireplace

This DVD completely satisfied my expectations. I wasn't looking for anything other than a crackling fire that would be on the TV without music or other distractions. It was a nice touch to Christmas morning activities in my home. If you are looking for a basic DVD that makes your TV look like a fireplace, you will probably be happy with this one.

The greatest western ever filmed!

I first viewed The Searchers as a film major in college. In the last twenty years I have seen this film at least forty times. "How can you watch the same movie over and over" my wife always ask. My reply is simple...this is the greatest western ever made.
What makes it so great is of course John Ford's direction and his signature as an auteur. His economy of frame space, the majesty of Monument Valley and the internal struggle of a man's racism and his inability to become a viable member of the Ford definition of family.
The family is a centerpiece in many of Ford's films. The Grapes of Wrath and How Green is My Valley are two that come to mind. The Joabs and the Morgans struggled as a family. Although the struggle in The Searchers is for Ethan to find his daughter (I know it says his niece, but take it from someone who has seen this film as many times as I have--she's his daughter...I can prove it, write me). This is a portrait of a dysfunctional Ford family.
I urge everyone to read this movie. Yes, I said read. One of the first lessons in film school is that we do not watch a film, we read it. You must remember that time and space of any film only exists as the film is being projected. Every piece of furniture, every prop is all in the frame for a reason--placed there by the director to add to the untold story and to the characters' personality. Look beyond the dialogue; look at that picture on the wall; look at the custumes that the characters are wearing-- then ask yourself why are they here and what are they trying to tell me. When you do this, you have graduated from watching a film to reading a film.

HYSTERICAL....

Okay, let's get this out of the way first ... I don't typically find Jack Black very funny and Colin Hanks is Tom Hanks' son so that creates natural skepticism. Having said that, I really liked this movie! Don't look for rocket science here or gushy, gooey romance. But there is plenty of humor, especially if you don't live in Orange County. If you're a non-Californian and you're of the prominent opinion that Orange County (and CA in general) is full of flakes and crazy people, this is the movie for you. The entire movie pokes tongue-in-cheek humor at this locale. Colin Hanks' character is believable and funny. Jack Black adds just the right amount of off-color humor to offset Hanks' straight-man humor. The supporting cast lends plenty of comedic support (esp. the parents -- John Lithgow of Third Rock among others and the mother from Home Alone).
The premise of the movie is as follows ... Colin Hanks' character is a surfer dude turned intellectual upon becoming enamored with a book he finds on the beach (Kevin Kline has a cameo in the film as the book's author). Jack Black is Hanks' wastoid brother. Their parents are divorced -- the father is a wealthy womanizer with a twinkie of a new wife and the mother is a bit of an alcoholic who is married to a guy who she hopes will kick the bucket soon (she married for the money). The film is about Hanks' quest to get into Stanford and study under the writer of his favorite book. His plans are maylaid throughout the movie, particularly with Black's well-intentioned, but horrible assistance. In the end, things turn out well as with all comedies, but the road is absurdly and humorously bumpy.
As for the DVD itself ... the extras are good. Be sure to watch all the trailers because some of the scenes didn't actually appear in the movie but were funny. The deleted scenes are worth watching as well.
Don't believe the lack of hype and box office bucks, this is a good one!

movie you can't afford to miss

alex cox is a genius. chloe webb and gary oldman were absolutely amazing in this film. they dipicted the characters so well, at times i thought i was watching the real sid & nancy. the film is such a great balance of a love story, the story of the sex pistols, and the battle of sid & nancy against heroin. the final scene is beautiful and very euphemistic. it's so difficult to believe that this story is real-not fictional in any way. it's such an amazing plot with a surprise twist ending (that is, if you've never heard the story of sid and nancy). no negative comments--this film is a classic and sure to carry on the saga that is sid & nancy.

The Truth

This movie is by far one of the best sports movies of all time. I say "sports movies" because it captures the essence of the love of the game that only those of us that have experienced it will recognize. It is simple, fun, and doesn't really need to resort to outlandish gross-out moments to find it's heart. I watch this movie everytime I come accross it on television. A similar non-sports based movie would be "Stand By Me", also highly recommended.

What these episodes are about

I am not going to talk about nothing and get annoying and sound obsessive in this review, I'm gonna get right down to the point. If you have seen te first 8 episodes than i suggest you read this otherwise dont and see those first 8 so what I am saying is not confusing you.
Episode 9: Yusuke had just finished his first case as spirit detective and of course he is in for another. Boton(Yusuke's assistant and Grim Reaper) tells Yusuke of Genkai(a very powerful psychic) who fears her death is near, is holding a series of tests with the winner being taught her powers. It is thought that a demon, Rando, will enter the tournament in disguise. Rando is a very powerful demon who has taken the lives of 99 psychics for there techniques and if he inherets genkais powers he would be unstoppable. Yusuke shows up at Genkais where he finds Kuwabara. Kuwabara being Yusuke's Rival being there for a different reason then everyone one else there, decides he will pass the tests hopping he can beat Yusuke in the end.
Episode 10: The tests are over and now it is down to 8 finalists including Yusuke and Kuwabara. Genkai decides to have everyone left to fight in a tournament, but this wont be easy because they have to fight in the dark. Two fights are over and Kuwabara is next up. Things dont look good for Kuwabara. Just when Kuwabara is about to die something happens his energy forms into a solid object(a sword). The battle ends and Yusuke is up next. Things look even worse for Yusuke where he must fight the incredibly powerful Kibano. Can he come up on top or will he be defeated before he can get to Rando.
Episode 11: Yusuke continues his fight and finally ends it. Now Genkai has brought the 4 Semifinalists outside to finish the tournament. Yusuke doesnt get a break and now must have another battle this time with Kazemaru. Kazumaru has many tricks up his sleave. Is Rando Kazemaru or could he be Shorin? Can Yusuke defeat the extremely powerful bodyguard.
Episode 12: Kuwabara's Semifinals match is next against Shorin. Shorin might look small and weak, but looks arent everything. Shorin also is a powerful fighter, though just a child, with interesting techniques. Will Kuwabaras spirit sword be enough to defeat Shorin? Just an idea for you the last episode doesnt end the case so you might want to buy Volume 4.

Scarface - movie DVD cover picture
classic pacino

Lets first get one thing straight- this movie is not classy, enjoyable, great or anything else, those who are obsessed with the film will tell you. This film is unpleasant to say the least, after watching the movie for my first and only time I felt morally corrupt and bankrupt, a feeling I have never really experienced before even after seeing the Godfathers, Goodfellas and Donnie Brasco. I'd go as far to say I was almost cheering on the bad guys in them films!
Most of the film was complete, mindless violence. If we're comparing violence, and unpleasant scenes on a scale of 1-10 Scarface is up there at 10, no doubt about it, Goodfellas doesn't even come close. This guy (Al Pacino) is mean, hes pure evil, not your average mob guy- no Henry Hill, no Sonny Corleone even. He makes Joe Pesci's charachter in Goodfellas look like Mother Tresa or Ghandi and no that is not an exhageration! And it over steps the mark, it stops being entertaining, moving it just comes across as being unrealistic and sick.
I hated the soundtrack which was cheap 80's keyboard rubbish, rather than belnd into the background it was firmly in the foreground and got in the way. The combination of the directing, music and acting when Pacino's character goes crazy when he sees a guy with his sister (any guy, even his best friend) is terrible.
His cocaine addiction just over stepped the mark and stopped being entertaing or moving too. Just sick. It was hard to watch some of the scenes and I watch a lot of mob films! and scarface seems to develop an unhealthy sexual thirst for his sister!
Finally (thanks for reading if you've got this far) don't watch this film- just don't (about sums it up)
