Exciting, Thoughtful, and Visually Spectacular

Contact is a movie that works on every conceivable level. It is a smart, thoughtful, and entertaining show with an absolutely brilliant performance by Jodie Foster (her closing scene testifying at a Senate hearing could be the best thing she has ever done, and that's saying a lot.) What makes this movie so special is its ability to keep the focus on the characters and story despite the presence of some mindblowing, truly spectacular visual effects. That's unexpected with films today normally leaning one way or the other. (Speaking of visual effects, the camera perspective for the scene in which young Elle tries to help her stricken father is just impossible to explain or describe.) For the serious movie buff, the DVD includes some insightful commentary from the director and FX supervisors, as well as Foster. This is just a stunning piece of work that was overlooked to a great degree when it was released.

All age folks...

This film is actually important! Its not just well done & fun, but a learning experience. The details are close enough to real life to help anyone learn more about the youth of the current generation. Although it may not make much sense in a deeper way to some, its still a fun & entertaining film, so anyone should enjoy it.

The best!

How some people can rate it 5 star is a mystery to me. The original (The Visitors, for sale at Amazon also) does not deserve to be compared with this c**p!! It is after many years still one of my favourite films and I don't even speak French! I wish I did. I could take a French course just to get all the jokes. Sigh, why can't America be happy with influences from the rest of the world instead of trying to interpret everything into the American way. Which by the way they do very poorly. And they should instead concentrate of writing their own material. Someone is obviously being overpaid.

Well-drawn animation, and an easy-to-understand plot!

This is probly the worst movie I've ever seen.I am die hard DBZ fan and I love every DBZ movie/episode even the (yucky) ones but this one is terrible. Stupid plot and no action. It is alsoexremely short. 45 minuets. That is 1 1/2 episodes. And if your have to buy it , buy it uncut. The cut one cuts EVERYTHING out.

Spectacle & Reverence....

You will never see a movie like the Russian War and Peace ever again. With battle scenes involving 200,000 extras (the Russian Army), made prior to CGI, the film has awesome scope and spectacle to spare, as well as a reverence for the source material, Tolstoy's massive and magnificent novel.
It will not please all fans of the novel, no movie can ever do that, but it is a worthy effort in trying to capture Tolstoy's sprawling story, which itself shifts from the spectacle of the wars with Napolean to the intimacy of family life and society in 19th century Russia.
There is meticulous recreation of the lifestyles of the nobility of the era, and some simply incredible sweeping re-staging of the key battles of Austelitz and later the War of 1812. Shot with incredible tracking shots, crane shots and aerial camerawork, there are images here that are stunning.
Perhaps the more intimate stories of the loves of Natasha (a marvelous Irina Skobtseva, a Natalya for all times), the travails of Prince Andrei and Pierre are somewhat overwhelmed by the greater spectacle of the war, but we come to know them nonetheless. Some of the other characters that are vivid in the novel are given short shrift, but in so huge an undertaking, I don't know how that could be avoided. More than one viewing will help to sort them all out.
At any rate, we are left with an incredible effort to capture the sweep of history and its effects on the individuals caught up in it. Tolstoy's themes of love and death, of the horror and futility of war, of the price paid by all for the egotism of a Napolean and the ambitions of ruthless men, are here. The foolish & foolhardy, the wise and the devious, the courageous and the cowards, the loving and the indifferent, i.e., all the very human characters in Tolstoy's Russia are here as well. And the great span of the film allows us to see them grow and change.
Not perfect, but a hugely ambitious film that succeeds more often than not. Worth it.

The Best Of The Star Trek Motion Pictures

A good rule to remember with the Star Trek motion pictures is to watch only the even numbered ones (2, 4, and 6) and avoid the odd numbered ones (1, 3, and 5.) Taken all together, this is the best Star Trek to be released on motion picture. It offers a pleasant recap of unfinished business presented in the original TV series and, it has all the requirements for a great film in terms of direction, script, and cinematography.

The film addresses the uncertain fate of Kahn (Ricardo Montalban) and his minions who first appeared in the original episode titled 'Space Seed.' Kahn is a product of the past when the Earth was embroyled in a eugenic war. Kahn and his followers were banished from Earth and sent to roam empty space in their ship, The Botany Bay, in cryogenic freeze. After running into the Enterprise and coming out of his slumber, Kahn sought to take over Kirk's ship but his plot was foiled: Kahn and his crew were placed on the uninhabited planet of City Alpha 5 to spend the rest of their days in exile. The film starts at a much later period where Federation men accidentally run into Kahn's colony. Kahn escapes and seeks vengeance on Kirk for having abandoned him on a desolate planet. With guile and cruelty, Kahn seizes a new machine that can be transformed into the most destructive weapon the Federation has ever seen. Will Kirk and his crew stop him in time?

Ricardo Montalban is definitely the shining star in this movie. His expressions of rage and obsession are quite impressive. The rest of the cast (Shatner, Kelley, Nimoy, etc.) perform their usual Enterprise routine pretty well. The film has a fast-moving plot with a good script and great special effects. This is truly the gem of all Star Trek motion picture films.

Powerful Human Story, Surprising Romance

The acting especially by the leads (Moon So-ri and Sol Kyung-gu) was fantastic; Moon's performance convinced me she was truly disabled. Also, the pace felt faster than it actually was. Beautiful cinematography, like so many Korean films.

While I remain a little ambivalent about how so many acclaimed Korean dramas portray rape, this film was able to make the protagonists' disabilities secondary to the plot and not the focus. Sometimes difficult to watch, this movie wouldn't have been made in Hollywood, and it's definitely worth watching.
