Great movies, but buy with caution.

The films that make up this box set are, in a word, epic. However, as many of you know, there are the extended edditions with supurb supplimentary features disks. When I learned of the Fellowship extended eddition (from a trailer on the origional dvd I had just spent $20 for) I nearly killed myself. It wasnt so much that I was upset about the money, I was just uneasy with the fact that I would have to buy the same movie twice in order to experience it fully --wich is a marketing ploy if I ever saw one. I vowed not to be decieved again, happily passing by the theatrical release of The Two Towers. When I finnaly got my hands on the extended eddition I discovered to my supprise that I liked the theatrical version better! Im not entierly sure why, I quess I just thought it was paced better. Now I havnt seen the extended version of the Return of the King (could that movie get any longer?), but if its anything like the Two Towers, you can expect an incredibly lenghthy film, with ausome exteras.
My point is, If you havnt seen the extended edditions, rent them, because you may just find their theatricle predecessors better. If so, buy the box set. Its even released on the last day of school (at least for me!), and it would make a great gift for your kids. Oh, and Mom, just in case your reading: this box set would be the diffinitive gift for your loving son.

why i love stanley donen, audrey hepburn, and henry mancini

most anyone who enjoys older movies enjoys stanley donen, whether they realize it or not. this is the man who brought us singin' in the rain, seven brides for seven brothers, and funny face, after all. and his turns directing non-musicals are equally impressive - just watch charade.
audrey hepburn, of course, needs no introduction.
why then this movie -the last of three the two made together- is so often overlooked is beyond me. this poingant, wildly inventive look at marriage has been cited by many as hepburn's best performance. it is possibly even donen's best film, of a repitoire which is hard to beat. it is simply a fantastic movie.
in short... go watch two for the road!

Rock Star - movie DVD cover picture
Profound!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, that's right! With "Rock Star," a film where "He went to take a piss" is the ultimate catch phrase, not all the cliches in the world can stop it from being a really deep drama.
Half of you probably think I'm on crack - oh well (I'm not btw). Sure, there are some cheesy moments (a lame "Wayne's World" nod to the "let's-headbang-in-a-car sequence"). Sure, there are the oldest cliches in the book ("...Dreams really can come true."). With the vehicle for this "right of passage"-themed story being heavily dipped in 80's excess, many people trash the movie despite it's somewhat tounge-in-cheek, satirical treatment a la "Spinal Tap". What's even easier than missing the point of the film is this: getting the point, thinking it's really trite, making fun of it, then forgetting about it. Well, okay, maybe you do need to be atleast somewhat tolerant of 80's metal in order to really get lost in the experience (I confess I like it), but the last half hour or so of the film was one of the more awe-inspiring bits I've ever seen in film. And okay again, maybe it's because I myself am a musician and it hits close to home... but nonetheless, this movie can really tug at your heartstrings and leave you in a more philosophical state than the 80's ever were. You can let the over-the-top bombast of the film do just the opposite, but a REALLY solid acting job (ESPECIALLY Mark Wahlberg and Jennifer Aniston) by the entire cast doesn't make that easy to do. The fact that Steel Dragon is a collection of actual decent musicians is some tasty icing on the cake.
I won't spoil too much in case you haven't seen it, but I need to say the following: To me, the concept of having all you could ever imagine, then finding an emptiness and depression come out of nowhere and consume an individual, is one of the scariest, most mind-blowing things to really ever think about - music aside. What is life really about? Yes, folks, that is the question that a little movie called "Rock Star" left me pondering as I exited the theater - and more recently, turned off the DVD player.

A Must For Heath Ledger Fans

Heath Ledger is gorgeous in this film! Alongside Julia Stiles - one for the guys - they put some chemistry into the film. The best part of this film is where Patrick Verona - played by Heath Ledger - sings "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" to Kat Stratford - Julia Stiles. This is one of my all-time favourite songs, and it's so sweet! When he sacrifices his reputation for her. This could put people off watching this film, as of the whole Shakespeare link thing, but it's total nonsense. It's a modern story, with only subtle hints about Shakespeare about it, which won't instantly hit you.Heath Ledger is the new ... Mel Gibson? They're both Aussies! Julia Stiles is definitely the new high school sweetheart, and after Kirsten Dunst's crown.

The Best Spanish Film I've Seen

Reviewer: Kris Bol from Marshfield, Wisconsin USA I saw this film in Spain while I was visiting and this was the best film yet. The horrific twists and turns that this movie takes you through is amazing! First you think one thing, then something makes you think another! Fabulous and a no-turn-off movie! You want to hide your eyes, but don't want to because you're afraid of missing an important piece of the movie!

Bottle Rocket - movie DVD cover picture
Film = 5 stars DVD = 3

Even if Bottle Rocket had no merits of its own, it would be worth watching to see the beginning of what I hope will be a long and lasting working relationship--that of Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson (and Luke). Like Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums, their follow-up films, Bottle Rocket is a wonderful mix of deranged humour and quiet sadness. The drama always stops just short of heartbreaking, and the comedy just short of slapstick, leaving us only with a bunch of characters we care about, and their crazy, messed up lives.Bottle Rocket is not flawless. I'm not sure why not, just as I'm not entirely sure why its so close to flawless. But it has a wonderful screenplay, full of such lines as "Bob's gone, he stole his car!" or, in response to one characters depression that his eight year old sister thinks he's a failure, "She thinks your a failure? What she ever do with her life that was so great?" The romance between main character Anthony and the Paraguayan housekeeper Inez is touching, as is the sometimes uncomfortable friendship between Anthony and the bonkers-in-a-sad-kind-of-way Dignan. Scenes stay in your memory, like Anthony and Bob watching the retreating Dignan through a fence, or Dignan handing a sparkler to Inez. The cast is great, from Luke Wilson and Owen Wilson (Owen is always an obvious standout, Luke is the type who you appreciate more with each film you see him in) to Robert Musgrave as the hangdog Bob and Lumi Cavazos as Inez. And Kumar Pallana makes his inevitable Wes-Anderson-movie appearance as a safe cracker ("ya, I'm ok man").

Devdas - movie DVD cover picture
as lucious as Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam

Sanjay Leela does not disappoint after he won me over with the visually sumptuous Hum DIl De Chuke Sanam- where the cinematography, the music, costumes, sets and nuanced acting of usually "commercial" stars like Salman Khan were a wonderful surprise. Devdas has naysayers- people who would be shocked if a movie like Casablanca was remade. But I saw the film not as a remake of a classic, but as a movie on its own. I loved it. A reviewer writes that she needs to see the film again b/c she was reading the subtitles- well I did not need to read subtitles but I still need to see it again b/c I just could not absorb everything there was that begs to be appreciated.
