Great fun but . . .

Not a suspense film as such - we find out very early on who are "goodies" and the "baddies", but one thing the cheerers at Glenn Close's shooting didn't seem to consider is that she was pregnant at the time. Interesting morality point rather glossed over by the movie, but it was still a good one. Worth buying for sure.

Inu-Yasha - Kikyo's Wandering Soul (Vol. 8) - movie DVD cover picture

Inuyasha: Volume 8: Kikyo's Wandering Soul contains three highly dramatic episodes that pull you deeper into wanting to watch more of this series. If you are not hooked after this DVD, you will never be. Volume 8 contains three episodes, 22, 23, and 24. They are titled "The Soul of Kikyo," "Kagome's Voice and Kikyo's Kiss," and "Enter Sango, the Demon Slayer."

After showing how Kikyo makes herself feel better by capturing souls of brokenhearted women with her soul-stealing demons (which look like eels), we see how she just wants to live in peace and anonymity in a little village where she has found a home. Alas, it is not to be. A powerful monk is out to defeat her, Kagome finds her hiding place, and she is followed by an adoring little village girl. There truly is no rest for the dead here. The first two episodes give Kikyo and Inuyasha fans a lot of material. We can see how they still love each other, how love reaches out beyond the grave. Sadly, Kikyo's love has been somewhat twisted.

The third episode, "Enter Sango, The Demon Slayer," is the darkest, most violent episode of the Inuyasha series so far. Yet, it is also one of the most compelling. The stunning Sango makes her debut. We see her village, her family, her lifestyle and proud tradition of being accomplished Demonslayers. In the blink of an eye, it is all lost, with horrible cruelty. Those who have seen Sango only in later episodes as part of the gang, without knowing her full history and the anguish she suffered, will never look at her the same way after seeing this DVD and Volume 9: Origin of the Sacred Jewel.

Thoroughly Modern Millie - movie DVD cover picture

If you like silly movies, but don't really like visual humor, this is a better choice. It's a great movie and you see more in it each time you watch. I loved the way you get to see Julie Andrews' thoughts (as Millie) in little signs held up like the silent movie era. Those of Chinese ancestry might not appreciate some of the humor, but you must remember this is a movie about the 1920's and the term politically correct had not been coined! And it's so zany, there's really nothing harmful in it. Millie is a secretarial school graduate, determined to get a job and marry her boss. The songs are outstanding and the casting was inspired. Mary Tyler Moore plays a rich-girl-going-out-into-the-world to perfection and words can't describe Andrews as Millie (check out the opening song, where she buys a devise designed to make "full fronted" girls have the flat look that is in vogue. As she buys a pack of cigarettes--we must be modern at all costs-- it comes undone and the vendor does a double take as her "front" expands quickly!) Carol Channing is her usual crazy self as Muzzie, who has instructors teaching her everything from fighting to flying (with romance on the side!)and she does a great song about jazz. This is a great movie!

The Brady Bunch Movie - movie DVD cover picture
Groovy movie that is really happening in a far-out way!

When I first heard about the concept of this movie, I thought it was dumb-I liked the idea of a BB movie, especially since the previews looked great, but then I read I review about how the Bradys are in a "time warp" and the rest of the world is in the late 90's. When I saw the movie, all my fears were put to rest. In fact, some of the "culture clash" scenes of the Bradys interacting with the rest of the world were the funniest, such as McKean's character not understanding a word of what she's saying because of her lisp, an attempted car-jack "Well, this is a car. But my name's not Jack!" and Marcia's best female friend being a lesbian with a hopeless crush on her.
There's not really enough room to say enough good things about this movie, but here's some of them. First, the dead-on impressions are great, especially Alice, Jan, and Marcia, but Robert Reed is really the stand-out-he sounds more like Mike Brady than Mike Brady, and has his mannerisms down perfect. Lots of in-jokes and references that kids who didn't watch the show won't get but those of us like me that did will get: for instance, when Carol kisses Mike goodbye when he leaves for work, she says, "See ya later, Tiger! (pause) Tiger...Tiger...I wonder what ever happened to that dog?" the blackboard in the kitchen has "porkchops and applesauce" written on it, etc. They even manage to throw in a reference to Johnny Bravo. The period detail is great including the costumes. There's some little sexual innuendo thrown in, but it fits in with the movie and the characters perfectly-one of the funniest scenes is when Carol and Mike think they're alone, and she's sitting on his lap whispering what is probably something dirty in his ear, and he's saying "Uh-huh...You would...I see..." exactly like Mike Brady does when he's talking to someone on the phone. They include the popular Brady songs like "Sunshine Day" (always kind of grated on me, but they do a great version in a Sears store) and the horrible one that starts "Clowns never laughed before..." but "Keep On" is actually a pretty catchy one. They recreate many famous moments/plots from the show, such as Marcia's nose getting broken ("Oh! My nose!") to Jan's delight, potato sack races, Jan hating her new glasses, Bobby being the Safety Monitor at school, and plenty more. The plot (yes, it actually has one) involves the Brady family's efforts to save their beloved home from an evil land-developer. Highly recommended, even if you're not a Brady completist. Watch for the cameos from 4 original cast members-the best was the real Alice playing a truck driver (hmmm, always though Alice was a little butch) picking up hitch-hiking Jan who has run away from home.
Most importantly to me, though this is a parody, the moviemakers make fun of the show while still staying true to the spirit of it and the characters. All their naivete is actually sweet rather than annoying-Marcia wears hideous 70's clothes but carries herself like a princess, Greg wants to make friends with the car-jacker, assuming he must need a spare tire, Mike explains how he wouldn't sell his house for any price because he designed it himself with love. During one scene, Marcia and Jan go to a "Teen Model" tryout (Jan is instantly booted) and the photographer/agent tells her she needs to cut her hair, get breast implants, and lose some weight. She slaps, him horrified: "CUT MY HAIR? How dare you!" Greg's lines to pick up chicks (well, it seems like this is his only opening pickup line) is "Hey groovy chick. You look really happening in a far out way!" are actually endearing.
Everyone with a sense of humor and fun will probably like this movie, and those of us who grew up on the show will absolutely love it.

hilarious surprise

I saw this movie on a flip of the coin (heads: K-Pax, tails-Bandits), finding nothing else I was particularly interested in paying to see that day. In truth, I was was a little disappointed that heads didn't turn up, but the coin was truely a gold one, and this film ended up a gem! Bruce willis was on top of his game, Cate Blanchette was a surprise as a comic actress, and Billy Bob Thornton was amazing in his role as the hypochondriac brains of the operation. The movie was paced just fast enough, punctuated with romantic breaks and incredible seconds of silent hilarity.
This was the highlight of my fall film search...very appropriate for young teens, with a minimum of vulgarity and sex, but probably not to appreciated by older teens whose appetites usually call for predictable teen romance and hollywood endings.
i'll probably go to see it again with my twoo teenagers.

Garfield Holiday Celebrations - movie DVD cover picture
FINALLY!! It's about time!

Obviously the Garfield feature film has sparked interest in FINALLY reviving the old Garfield holiday specials - and now they can be introduced to a new generation on DVD format. For years, the VHS versions have been long out of print and have been sold for outrageous prices over the years on eBay. DVD releases such as this is every eBay price gougers nightmare.

The three featured episodes are the Garfield Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas specials; the Halloween and Christmas being the better of the three. On Garfields Halloween adventure, Garfield convinces Odie to go trick-or-treating with him to get double the candy-candy-CANDY!! They cross a river to an old house in search of more candy, only to stumble upon an old man awaiting the ghost of pirates who are coming to reclaim their treasure. The Thanksgiving special is obviously the weakest holiday special (as with the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving special in the Peanuts series), where John invites the veterinarian lady over for dinner. There are some cute antics, but nothing like the other two. The Christmas special is when John takes Garfield and Odie home for an old-fashioned family Christmas. Garfield befriends grandma, as Odie sneaks behind everyone to make Garfield the perfect Christmas gift. Definitely touching if you're a pet owner. At long last these 3 long-awaited episodes are finally arriving on DVD, and not a holiday year too soon!

What more is there to say?

Can't say anything that the other 1500 people haven't. Just want to add my 5 star rating to the pot. One of the only things in this world that I recommend people just go and buy without ever seeing it, cause you'll want to buy it anyway so you may as well get it done now.

best of British comedy

Brilliant comedy centred around Edina and her alcoholic (although she undoubtedly aslo tried every other type of drugs available) friend Patsy. The most important things in their lives are shopping (Lacroix darling), lunches and parties. Edina does some work in her PR company every now and then, whereas Patsy seems to make a living having sex with the right people (although she turns out to be a fashion director for a magazine in one of the episodes). Both are obsessed by their figure and age, which daughter Saffie is more than happy to remind them of. It is not suprising therefore that espeically Patsy hates her. Enough material for 6 (and more in the following series) great episodes!
If you know the series, you are probably thinking of buying this already, and if you don't it is time you did.
