Great comedy - a spectacular movie

Rushmore is easily one of my favorite comedy movies . . . ever. The cast is amazing and the movie is very well-written. This is a very enjoyable movie that can be serious and funny at the same time. Great . . . also a very very good soundtrack. All around good movie, a must-see.

Film doesnt get much better than this

Eternal Sunshine is a visually dazzling and emotionally challenging film. I would deem it impossible to walk away from watching it without believing that every experience in life, good or bad, every relationship, pitfall job etc we have shapes who we are and being grateful for each. This movie is one of a kind which is so rare nowadays. It is comparable to Big Fish in what it asks from the viewer, and what it offers. It is simply beautiful. Carrey and Winslet have outdone themselves.

A thriller with brains, a drama with heart

Robert Redford does it again in this much lauded film that is flawlessly executed with pathos and suspense, and, incidentally, one of the top picks of 1994. "Quiz Show" is the absorbing, engrossing story of tirumphs and downfalls (of both tv showbiz and personalities). The cast is quite remarkable--John Turturro is brilliant and sympathetically strikes a cord with us, Rob Morrow is nothing short of powerful, and Ralph Fiennes is stiffly and guiltily confused as one who has to live up to the incredible reputation of his father (played by Paul Scofield, who's absolutely terrific). There's some awesome directing that requires a second viewing (including where Fiennes is rubbing his sweaty cheeck with a cold bottle of milk, as if to cool his shame). The script is also extremely witty and literate; in other words, brilliant and remarkable. The cinematography is very effective and observant (the game show owners says to Ralph Fiennes, "It's okay, there's only the three of us," and the camera looks at Fiennes, towering over him ominously). "Quiz Show" is a masterpiece, a thriller with brains, a drama with heart. Don't miss this.

Theater Of Blood

The cast alone makes this worth the price of admission, and what a cast! Twelve of the greatest of British character actors grace this gory but delightful romp with Vincent Price in his usual fine form as a presumably dead Shakespearean ham actor who one by one murders the critics who ruined his career. The joke is that he dispatches his victims by recreating death scenes from the Shakespeare plays with the help of his equally deranged daughter, played with great skill by everyone's favorite Avenger Diana Rigg. The entire cast is in fine form, including Price's soon to be second wife Coral Browne who gets quite a "shock" in this. If you enjoy Price's work on film and if you especially enjoyed the DR PHIBES films, then THEATRE OF BLOOD will be right up your alley.

An achievement - the best case yet for a 6 star rating

This film may be in a class of its own. Nicholson is magnificent and he's surrounded by perhaps the best supporting cast possible. It's hard to tell if Nicholson is acting or just being Jack. Add to that exceptional perfomances by Louise Fletcher and others and it's a perfect formula for outstanding cinema. The film displays the cruel treatment of mental illness in old institutions as R.P. McMurphy (Nicholson) is committed for evaluation. Being more of a hell raiser than a mental patient, others in the ward find his behavior magnetic and almost theraputic. Easily one of the best films of the century, this is a "must see" for all. Bravo Jack! You've done outstanding stuff before and after Cuckoo's Nest, but this is still your best!

Truly bizarre, but lovable

Hmm. Perhaps that needs some explanation.
My roommate is a very modern guy. For the most part, he doesn't like anything that came before the 80's. But he agreed to watch this 1960's movie, primarily because it was by Mel Brooks. I assured him he'd love it.
By the time the "Springtime for Hitler" number (one of the greatest songs in modern cinema) was over, he was laughing harder than I'd ever seen him laugh before. Once it was over, he immediately rewound it to watch it again, another first for him.
So what makes this such a hilarious movie? You have Zero Mostel; although I've never seen another of his movies, they must be hilarious as well. You have Gene Wilder; his hilarity I already know of. You have Dick Shawn and Kenneth Mars, nearly stealing the show. You have the great songs, such as the aforementioned "Springtime for Hitler" and "Prisoners of Love."
And finally, you have Mel Brooks. One of the great cinematic masters of comedy, his debut film is one of his funniest.
Highest possible recommendation!

Magnolia - One of the Greatest Movies Ever!

"Magnolia" was a great movie for many many reasons. The intricate plot, with amazing character work...and even though the movie is three hours long, it really moves along nicely. Tom Cruise is absolutely spectacular...his finest roll EVER. Playing the larger than life motivational speaker that can "Tame" everyone and everything in his breaking down at the bedside of his dying father. All of the intricate plot lines and character analysis is what makes the movie an amazing joy to watch. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! You really are missing out on something if you miss the can really change the way you view life.

I loved this movie!

Wow, I loved this movie! Disregard everything the above review says. The characters were well-developed, enjoyable, and witty; the plot, though by no means original, was highly entertaining and passionate; and the scenery was gorgeous. De Bartolo has made an excellent film that will satisfy the romantic in anyone.

Excellent History Lesson

I am writing this review immediately after watching the movie. It is a very thought provoking movie, and my mind is still digesting the many ideas and questions raised by this movie. So while this review lacks in well-formed intellectual critique, I hope this is compensated by immediacy of my emotional response.
I am first aware that I, the viewer of this movie, as well as the director of the movie onscreen interviewing Leni, are in the presence of an intellectually strong, artistically gifted, pioneering, insightful, once-beautiful and daring, woman. And the awareness of this is at once intimidating and compelling. Now in her 90's, we realize her life's talent and triumph is also her burden and downfall.
Born in 1902, her story begins as an actress beautiful, atheletic, and daring on the granite faces of the alps. Through turns of events she becomes a director, and through the times she comes to direct documentaries of great political influence such as Triumph of the Will.
The intrigue for me comes in several forms: 1) Understanding her directorial techniques that so influenced the masses in Germany, 2) Understanding her culpability, 3) Understanding the culpability of the German people (who clearly all supported Hitler), 4) Understanding the tradgedy of it all, both for her, Germany, and the rest of the world.
Like I said, I've just seen the movie, and don't have a well-formed critique at the tip of my tongue or typing fingers. What I can say is this: this is a good movie, substantial in historical insight, and a great documentary and biography (one of my favorie genres). I'll be thinking of this movie for quite a while. Thoroughly thought-provoking!
