Great Movie for all Interested in German modern History

This wonderful movie shows, how living in Eastern Germany was like until the wall came down in 1990. It lets you understand, what kind of a "culture shock" the Western lifestyle was for those, who had been living in that socialistic state all life long.
Eastern Germans watch the movie and recall tender memories of the way they used to live. Western Germans and people of other nationalities finally understand, that living over there was not "just bad".Besides all the negative there were a lot of funny and enjoyable things, that now are part of many people's precious past, which shaped their personality and made them what they are today.
I am a German myself, so it was great to watch the movie! The film will make you laugh and cry at the same time. It is a comedy and at the same time a drama.
This movie is recommandable for everyone who is wanting to find out more about Germany's modern history and still wants to enjoy a nice TV-evening and laugh...

Mozart - Don Giovanni / Giorgio Strehler · Riccardo Muti · T. Allen · E. Gruberova · Teatro alla Scala - movie DVD cover picture
An exciting opera and well worth watching!

Here are my reasons: 1. The delightful staging by Giorgio Strehler - a subtle and elegant setting for the precious jewel of Mozart's opera! Every little detail matters: dry leaves flutter with fear and fury when Don Giovanni escapes from Donna Anna's house; "fleur d'orange" removed from Zerlina's head by amorous Don Giovanni and flowers thrown down by Masetto silently witness the passionate conversation between Don Giovanni, Don Ottavio, Donna Anna and Donna Elvira till finally are picked up by Leporello and Don Giovanni to remind them of the unhappy wedding celebration; Don Giovanni turns his would-be handshake with Leporello into a vulgar bribe to let the servant know his place... The "catalogue scene" (Leporello, Donna Elvira), the opening scene of the 2nd Act (Don Giovanni, Leporello), the "dinner scene" at the end of the 2nd Act (Don Giovanni, Leporello, Donna Elvira) are simply masterpieces! ...and not the only ones in this opera! 1. Acting/Performance
Certainly in an opera it is the quality of the music and singers' voices that matters. But the opera should not only be sung but performed! I mean the singers' performance starting with the intonation to the gestures and movement. Well, in this production you have the advantage of seeing all possible operatic performance styles... ;-) "*" - The singer goes to the middle of the stage and delivers his aria, his only concern being to start and stop singing with the music (F. Araiza as Don Ottavio). The singer feels the character's emotions. Her severe sufferings make the spectators suffer too till they start longing for someone to stop the poor singer's torments! (E. Gruberova as Donna Anna) I'm sorry to write this because they both have beautiful voices but poor performance ruins the effect! Try closing your eyes when they start singing! ;-} "**" - N. de Carolis as Masetto and S. Koptchak as the Commendatore - adequate performance. "***" - A. Murray as Donna Elvira - there are some obvious faults in her acting, but despite of it her performance seemed very sincere to me. S. Mentzer as Zerlina - charming!!! "*****" - T. Allen as Don Giovanni and C. Desderi as Leporello - there's actually so much to say about them that I think I shouldn't say anything... :) Gorgeous!! Every intonation, every turn of the head and every step shows their characters' personality and emotions. They are not Mr. Allen and Mr. Desderi singing arias: It is Don Giovanni, a Spanish nobleman, and Leporello, his servant, flirting with women, fooling about, plotting intrigues, enjoying life's pleasures and fearing the deadly handshake of the Commendatore... An exciting portrayal of the love-hate relationship between the master and the servant and on the whole - a brilliant performance rarely to be seen in an opera! 3. Last but not least: the excellent "screen version" of the opera. I've seen several recorded operas and dramatic performances - most of them were impossibly tedious (being at the same time tremendous success at the theater). It seems that some very essential part of the theatre magic is lost when the opera/play/ballet is transferred to the video tape or DVD. Not in this case! C. Battistoni and his team did a creative and very professional job - the magic of Mozart's music (marvelously conducted by R. Muti) shines in all its glory!
Heavenly music + wonderful voices + beautiful staging + great performance = well deserved 5 stars!!!

Great film but NOT in German! (Kein Deutscher Intertitel!)

Although I imagined that this film would be shown as authentically as was possible, I was terribly disappointed that I had no option to view it with the original, German, intertitles. There were, of course, English ones, that were quite well created using the German ones as a guide, typestyle and all, which I thought was a great touch, but I did expect that I would at least have the option of seeing it in its original form, and then also have the option for English subtitles, or maybe even better, intertitles. As a student of German, and that being one of the reasons I ordered this DVD, I was very disapppointed in its lack of "original film as created" option. Otherwise, a great mountain film, with specatacular natural vistas captured and a feeling of the time and the place which lingers on in a modern person's mind and imagination! Quite a great experience, but just a little disappointing for the German student!

One of my best Purchases

This season of Stargate is one of my alltime favorite purchases from the internet or even from a store. This show is awesome, and is highly recommended. I also got great value and benefitted from the books "Wisdom Daddy Taught Me" and "Secrets of Sensual Lovemaking" and the video "Rawfully Good," and the awesome instructional dvd "New Sex Now."
I would enthusiasticly advise any of my friends to buy all of the above.

Awesome Movie

Well I never thought that movie that looked this cheap was going to be so entertaining and simply fun, this supposed to be a cliche movie, but it has something different, of course has obvious turns and predictible endings but this movie was simply fun to watch....truly recommended for those lazy sunday afternoon without nothing to do. The lead actress Monica Potter is a Julia Roberts look-a-like with blonde hair don't you think.

"Ehhh {crunch crunch crunch crunch crunch}. What's up, Doc?"

Friz Freleng (1905-1995), Chuck Jones (1912-2002) and Robert McKimson (1910-1977) directed hundreds of different short, animated cartoons starting in the late 1920's through the early 1960's for Warner Brothers. Beginning in 1937, actor Mel Blanc (1908-1989) began to do the voices for many of the animated characters, including the first characters for the cartoons that would eventually become known as "Looney Tunes": Porky Pig and Daffy Duck. Later, in 1940, actor Arthur Q. Bryan (1899-1959) began doing the voice for what would become a very popular Looney Tunes character, Elmer Fudd. Elmer Fudd was introduced in the cartoon entitled "Elmer's Candid Camera" that also featured a rabbit character that would became the basis for the most popular and beloved Looney Tunes character: Bugs Bunny, whose voice was done by Mel Blanc. The third, and final, actor to lend her voice to the Looney Tunes characters was June Foray (1917-), who did the voices for Granny and Witch Hazel to name two. Other Looney Tunes characters who got their voices from Mel Blanc include Yosemite Sam, Tweety, Sylvester, Pepe le Pew, Foghorn Leghorn, Barnyard Dog, Wile E. Coyote, Speedy Gonzales, Marvin the Martian and the Tasmanian Devil.
I was thrilled to see Warner Brothers begin to release the Looney Tunes cartoons on DVD. "The Golden Collection", a set of 4 DVD's containing 56 different Looney Tunes cartoons, is not even one-tenth of the total number of cartoons created by Friz Feleng, Chuck Jones, Robert McKimson, Mel Blanc, Arthur Q. Bryan, June Foray, and the many animators that were involved over the years. Not only is the animation of the cartoons in "The Golden Collection" fully restored, scenes that are now considered inappropriate for commercial television have been included. I was surprised to watch a cartoon on the first DVD that I had never previously seen, "Big House Bunny" (1950), but after viewing it, I understood why no commercial television station had probably ever aired it. Thankfully, "Elmer's Candid Camera" is included on the third disk of "The Golden Collection".
Overall, I rate "Looney Tunes - The Golden Collection" with a resounding 5 out of 5 stars. The cartoons featured on these 4 DVD's are just as enjoyable today as they were when they were first viewed by theater-going audiences long before they began to be aired on commercial television. The stories and animation are by no means dated; instead, they demonstrate the high quality of the animation art long before computer-generated graphics came into use. Sadly, only June Foray remains alive today of the original masters of Looney Tune art, but their legacy of animation will continue to be enjoyed by generations of children (and adults) for years to come.

Share this with your children, even the youngest of them!

I have loved this movie for as long as I remember. My mom had bought it for me when I was really young, and I loved it ever since. If you love magic, fantasy, a great laugh and old movies this is the movie for you. I definetly think that this is a movie worth keeping in your collection. Little kids will love it, but so does adults. The cast is great, the songs are great, you'll be hooked on!!! Also great to get is the Sound of Music.

A superb collection of one of the funniest shows ever!

Conceive of a cunning plan to purchase this set of DVDs. Blackadder ranks as some of the funniest television, British or otherwise, ever produced. Even the so-called "lousy" first season is still absolutely hysterical.
This set is also loaded with supplements, including historical context, interviews, and production diaries. Oh, and yes, the Christmas Carol is definitely included.
This is a no-brainer and one of the best box sets ever released. GET THIS DVD SET!!!!
