Great Anime

The first time I saw this Anime I knew that I had to have it. So I went out and got this Anime. The only complant I had about Crest of the Stars was...it was TOO short. When it finished I wanted more. Thankfully I found out there was a second series to it. I also own that as well. It was even better then the first series. I reccomend that you get the second series, Banner of the Stars. I will also be getting the third series, Banner of the Stars 2. I know that most of you will enjoy this anime.

Case 2001: Eyes Wide Shut.

Okay, I see by the reviews here and by the reviews the critics had in the papers that this film is hit or miss depending on your perspective. I see also that some die hard Kubrick fans didn't like this film either. Well, if this film is viewed from an artistic, psychological perspective, it's pretty good. It's confusing enough to keep you coming back to re-watch it. I think all criticism aside, this is a very interesting and engrossing film. Yeah, it's long at 2 hours and 35 minutes approximately. However, the series of events keeps it interesting I think. Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman give fine performances given the subject matter of the film and given the fact that they probably had to do so many re-shoots as that is Kubrick's way. Perhaps the film could have been more clear had Kubrick lived to tinker with it some more. It is my fear that the film company may have taken liberties with this movie that we are unaware of. At any rate, I think this is first-rate Kubrick, I appreciate all his work, good or bad, and I don't feel that this is as bad as some people think. I do think that when people are presented with a subject that they can't quite grasp, they get irritated. I, for one, am intrigued instead of irritated or disappointed. I think this is a must have for any Kubrick fan and for any film collector.

The Dalai Lama - The Four Noble Truths - movie DVD cover picture
Inspiring, comprehensive, easy to understand

As a Christian trying to understand Buddhism better, I found this a clear and concise introduction to the central philosophy of Buddhism, with a strong humanistic emphasis. (Very different from the grass-roots Buddhist spirituality I have seen in Asia.) The Dalai Lama shows that he is not only a statesman and a leader, but also a teacher, scholar, and (most of all) a kind person. Often he amazes me with his honesty, even doubts.
This little book covers a lot of ground, and uses a lot of abstract nouns and very few anecdotes in the process, so it takes concentration to read. I found his discussion of the third noble truth, emptiness, frustrating. I kept waiting for him to define exactly what he meant by "empty" "intrinsic existence" and "unreal" in the Madhyamaka school he follows, but I felt he never really explained how his idea of emptiness differed from the common sense observation that everything in life changes. I wrote in the margin on page 107, "'Nothing lasts.' Have we got any further than this yet?" because I found his explanation vague and extremely broad, so broad the Dalai Lama almost seemed at times to be defining me as a Buddhist. But otherwise most of his explanations, and his discussions of the various schools, were clear and helpful.
The book ends with a rather simple but touching essay on kindness. For those who would like another perspective on self-love and compassion, try John Piper's Enjoying God: the Confessions of a Christian Hedonist, or C. S. Lewis' Four Loves.

Avoid 3 disk ripoff "imports"

Trigun is one off the best, if not THE best of the "adult swim" series of toons. The FULL boxed set for Trigun is 8 DVD's. The various "imports" that are offered are only 3 DVD's. The 3 disk set I bought from Eckool via Amazon is missing episodes, contains defective disks and defaults to the Japanese lanuage. A true rippoff. Go for the "real" boxed set.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Widescreen Edition) (Harry Potter 2) - movie DVD cover picture
A film adaption of a great novel at it's best. Incredible.

I sat down and read Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in one day, in one sitting. I loved the book, and was determined to love the movie.
The film does the book every bit of justice it deserved. NOTHING of dire importance was left out. Some gratuitous dialogue was changed to make it easier to understand (and not as lengthy). Chances are you won't notice anything left out other than Nearly Headless Nick's Deathday party unless you just read the book a few days ago (like I did).
The effects were great, the casting was great, everything about this movie was great. I have not enjoyed a film so much in a long, long time, and was thrilled to see it done so close to the book. It could not have been done any better, in my own humble opinion.
Kenneth Branagh as Gilderoy Lockhart was especially delightful. He pulled off the roll flawlessly and added a great bit of humor to the film in his own acting style.
I can't say much else about this movie except GO SEE IT!!! If you loved the book you will love the movie just as much, perhaps even more! And make sure you stay for the special clip that plays once the movie credits have finished rolling by at the end! ;-)

Blade Runner the way it was meant to be seen.

I recently bought a DVD player and this was one of the first DVDs on my wish list. I really like the director's cut of this film and the DVD version is much better than the VHS DirCut. This is a really great film.

A truly impressive movie!

This movie is not your typical sci-fi film. With a plot that draws you in and an incredible mix of drama and science fiction, Gattaca is an absolutely incredible movie. Ethan Hawke and Jude Law work together incredibily well and complement each other nicely. Throw Uma Thurman into the mix as Ethan's love interest and the movie takes off like a rocket. This movie also shows that you don't neccessarily need lots of sex, violence, and language to make an incredible movie.

rock paper scissors with doc oc's hands

this movie is awesome but i still dunno how doc oc can play rock paper scissors with those hands.egh what ever the movie was good but i didn't like the way doc oc died. he could have just been in a near death situation and the last scene should have showed him looking at spiderman unnoticed from afar

Character - movie DVD cover picture
Packs a Lot of Dramatic Punch

CHARACTER is all about tough love. Extremely tough. It is about family. In this instance, an extremely distant pair of parents and a young man seeking his identlty. It's also about great psychological drama, superior period design and unbelievably assured freshman filmmaking from director Mike Van Diem. It's also, as the title implies, about "building character." The father, Dreverhaven, has some unusual character building techniques, to put it mildly. He at one point tells the young man's mother that he will strangle 9/10s of the life out of son Jacob, but the remaining 1/10ths will make him strong. And just for good measure, he may take the last tenth as welll. Jan Decleir, as Dreverhaven, is a revelation. He's built like Gerard Depardieu and is even more preposessing than that fine actor on screen. He would make a great Javert or Lear in some future production. Victor L?w, as Jacob's mentor and elder friend, De Gankeelar, is unlike anyone you will have seen on screen or stage. With an impossibly jutting jaw and unique mode of speech, he is the ultimate character actor. The entire cast is splendid. I'm not at all familiar with Dutch Cinema, and am not even entirely sure the term isn't an oxymoron. This film, however, can stand beside anything in contemporary cinema. Now I just have to dig up the novel by Ferdinand Borewijk, from which the movie was adapted. It's such a compelling story that I'm sure the novel will be excellent, as well.
Five Stars and counting.
