Gladiator - movie DVD cover picture

Well, here I am again. I have watched all of this film and I have to say.. Wow! I watched it in the theater and forgotten about how good this movie is. Russel Crowe, got to give it to him. He's been in films before and now he is a star. The plot, the characters, and the special effects were just awesome. Problem, only in WIDE SCREEN. OMG, why didnt they make it both in wide and t.v. I'm sorry, I'm not going to go buy a wide screen t.v. just because most of the action flicks are wide screen. I be damned. Well until my next review.... Cya! IM OUT!!

Awesome Festival Documentary

I went to the 2003 Bonnaroo Music Festival and had one of the most memorable times of my life. The only thing I truly wanted in this DVD was for the footage to illustrate the magic and mindblowing music that was created at the festival. To be perfectly honest, this DVD does all that and more. With a ridiculous number of music performances from artists in every single genre (including awesome Widespread Panic, Allman Brothers, Ben Kweller, and My Morning Jacket), the DVD captures the diverse musical influeneces that makes bonnaroo so special. Infused with footage of the massive crowds and interviews with musicians and the fans, this film shows people all the special and breathtaking aspects of the best music festival in history. I highly recommend it if you have gone to the festival and I recommend it even more if you missed out. You will not be disappointed!!

Absolutely Wonderful !

The visual effect of the movie is worth seeing it, it was stunning ! The three children playing the rolls of Violet, Klaus and Sunny were right on the money for these rolls. They could not have chosen better actors for the three children. As for Jim Carrey, he pulled off being Count Olaf to the letter in my opinion. It's a great story with beautiful background settings. The cinemaphotography was dark but clear, the backgrounds jump off the screen almost as if it was some type of 3D effect (but it isn't 3D). Just rent or buy this DVD and watch it with the whole family, it is worth the journey.

Jason's Lyric - movie DVD cover picture
Where do I start

This movie dug right in and got me. The love story between to young people trapped in their lives was intense. The struggle between loyalities and the moral decay brought on by the inner city depression was so real.Jason and Joshua--brothers. Dealing with a traumatic past that haunts them. The secrets revealed in the end were deep and clarified much of Joshua's anger. He was such an angry boy.Lyric, another victim of circumstance was Jason's escape. Her name nearly said it all. Though it was her friend how quoted poetry it was Lyric who brought the words to life with her feelings for Jason. The movie as a whole EARNED it's R rating, unfortunately, and I can't say I recommend it for young teens--it does have it's graphic sexual scenes and violence. But BEHIND that, the story was a powerfully told.

Broadway - The American Musical (PBS Series) - movie DVD cover picture

This documentary spectacular succeeds marvelously within the limitations of the PBS program. Inevitably, segments in the history of musical theater have been streamlined and/or eliminated in order to work within less than six hours. Any attempt on Mr. Kantor's part to "cover" every person who contributed to this great form would have been devastatingly disappointing as a complete, final product. His choice to probe certain stands and select musical issues succeeds in illuminating the whole, especially the segment about the creation of new work. I highly recommend this product as well as the companion book by Laurence Maslon.

Jane Eyre - movie DVD cover picture
The BEST version of Jane Eyre ever put to film!

Jane Eyre is without question my all time favourite book. I first read it in high school and I vivdly recall the hairs standing up on the back of my neck the first time Jane heard "Grace Pool"'s insane laughter in the night! This is the most faithful film version I've yet to see. OK, Timothy Dalton is too handsome to play Rochester, but he has the character nailed to a tee - passionate, tortured, sardonic with just the right level of bitterness at the way "fortune has knocked me about". And Zelah Clark is the best Jane I've come across. Quiet, understated, but she's no shrinking violet and does not hesitate to stand up to the brooding, unpredictable and intimidating Edward Fairfax Rochester. And the wonderful dialog comes almost directly from the book. I think the reason this is the best is because it was a mini-series and could accommodate the entire story (for the same reason the Firth/Ehle version of Pride & Prejudice is the best version of that story). A two hour movie cannot do either story justice.
I absolutely abhored the Zefferelli version - who in their right mind would cast William Hurt as Rochester???? And Charlotte Gainsbourg's Jane was a bit pouty and petulant. Plus, some scenes were combined or compressed to fit the time requirements distorting the story. For many of the same reasons, I didn't care for the A&E version, though Samantha Morton was a pretty good Jane. But the usually wonderful Ciaran Hinds (see him in Austen's Persuasion) portayed Edward as so overly bitter (bordering on pathetic) that I couldn't see why anyone would fall in love with him. I don't think that I've ever seen the George C Scott/Trish Van Devere version. And it's been eons since I've seen the Joan Fontaine/Orson Wells version, but if memory serves, the casting was good, but again, the story was compressed for time and the dialog was subpar. There are just some lines of dialog that simply MUST be included for me to enjoy any version of this story and if those lines are not there it's curtains!
If you are a fan of Jane Eyre, you might want to read a book called Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys. It's a prequel and tells a version of the story of Edward's time in Jamaica and his marriage to his first wife (a rather strange story focusing on voodoo, slave unrest and her mother's mental instability). It's also been made into a movie (circa 1998?) which was okay.

Very Nicely Done

My standard rule applies here. I don't rate titles based on their artistic value as I see it. I happen to like this OAV very much -- but that does not necessarily mean you will.
I will, however, rate this title on it's technical merits.
Whom ever produced this DVD did a good job. The quality of the audio is very good on the Dolby Digital English track. The Japanese track is Dolby Digital 2.0 but it still sounds very good.
The video quality is far superior to any of the DVDs in the Gundam Wing lineup thus far. The image is stable with bright and accurate colors. The motion is fluid and free of any obvious artifacts. Backgrounds are also free of obvious decompression artifacts. In fact, I had a difficult time finding decompression artifacts on this DVD.
This DVD was obviously produced with care.
The extras are a little lean. The image and sound are so good, however, that I just don't care. This DVD simply looks great on all the systems I've tried -- including progressive scan.
I was pleasantly surprised by the overall quality of this DVD. If you are a Gundam Wing fan (13 or over) I think you will enjoy this DVD.
