Gilliam is the best

12 Monkeys proves once again that Gilliam can direct other people's material. This transfer is very good, and there is a running commentary track by Gilliam throughout the film in addition to the regular film soundtrack. There is also a "making of" film that will amaze even the most die-hard (ahem) Gilliam fan. 12 Monkeys proves Gilliam can direct, Willis can act, and insurance salespeople have more fun. (Dual-layer disc - no flipping required.) END

WOW

I rented this movie for Christmas time hoping to see a great movie and YES it was the greatest movie I've seen in 2003.To my biggest surprise the movie starts off with the war in Kosovo where the serbs are so vividly and accurately describedkilling innocent Albanian civilians as they burn down their towns and villages. What serbs don't know is that the Americans are observing their massacres from the very same spot so SAS forces head on and one soldier goes and slaughters the serb commander who gave orders to kill everyone in the town but when this soldier comes back home to U.S.A. he can not let go of the horrible things he saw.The killings and slaughtering of hundreds of Albanian men, children, women and elder people by cruel and idiotic serbs haunt him and change the path of his life. So back in U.S.A. he protects deers and other animals and kills all their killers.
This movie is so great and it makes you do a lot of thinking.Only once you've seen this movie you can have some idea what really went on in Kosovo and how bad it really was (and can be).
Highly Recommended for all.

The Day EVERYTHING Went Wrong

We've all had those moments when everything that could go wrong, did, and there's invariably someone available to cheerfully tell us how we should have done it. Aargh!!! Gwen and George have no fewer than 20 things go wrong on their business trip to New York. This movie is Murphy's Law stretched to the maximum and will have you laughing in sympathy to the couple's responses to misfortune. Wonderful movie you can watch with your children!

Requiem for a Dream - Director's Cut - movie DVD cover picture
The Horrror. The Horror.

Let's take a stroll down memory lane. No, correction: let's take a stroll down the big broad generous boardwalk of Coney Island, down past the Carousel of Dying Dreams, pausing a moment to stare at the Ferris Wheel of Decay and Death and Dissolution.

No. Don't stare. Darron Aronofsky's sophomore effort, "Requiem for a Dream", is a subversive instrument. It should be regulated by the secret police. It is a vicious sucker punch to the unprepared, unsuspecting kidney masquerading as an anti-drug flick. Be warned, this godawful thing has teeth. You will cry. You will blanch. Your face, virtuous, untainted by human sin (relatively, in our Relative World), will get all white and taut. You will get sick at your stomach. You might puke.

OK, there; disclaimers out of the way. Ma Goldfarb (Ellen Burstyn, amazing, truly, descended from Heaven with a fiery sword of Truth, I sh*t thee not) is a pudgy, rugose widow who dreams of getting on the game show she watches with cultic fervor. She lives in Brooklyn. She's aging, bored, flabby, tired. She is Hungry.

Her son Harry Goldfarb (the incomparable Jared Leto): living on the fringe in Brooklyn, hooking up with his needle-romancing friends on the fringes of a decaying Coney Island. Harry wants to be rich. He wants to fly. He wants to do the funky chicken dance only unrestricted "H" can bring about. He dreams of the big score. He wants to buy Ma Goldfarb a huge-a**ed Tee-Vee, where she can watch Gameshows Valhalla-style. He is Hungry.

Oh, but there's more: Dreams are like that. Like wars, they have dictionaries of casualties. There is an infinite supply of fresh, warm-blooded young meat for the grinder. Shall we continue? We shall. There's Tyrone C. Love (Marlon Wayans, redeeming himself), who imagines himself to be a better man---for his own life, for his progeny---than he is. He wants a quick, fast, fat, profitable score. Who can blame him? Who wants to eat catfood in retirement? Hungry.

But now, we can't forget Marion Silver (the astonishingly gorgeous Jennifer Connelly). Can we? We cannot. She is gorgeous. Her skin pulses with life. She is a rebel. She doesn't care. Ah, but she does. Youth cares, yes it does, for maybe it doesn't know of old age, but it can feel the thing's stinking corpse-breath. So yeah, Marion will deal---but she'd prefer not to. Which is why she goes along with Harry Goldfarb's "score". Hungry? Yup.

Half of the horror is watching a field of roses go up in a napalm strike: in that spirit, I won't spoil anything for you. Well, other than to say this: Love, as some sage once observed, is the most furiously dangerous trap of all. Darren Aronofsky has set horror to celluloid: the horror of a billion lives of quiet, and noisy, desperation. Be afraid: be very afraid.

Gods and Generals - movie DVD cover picture
Let's get one thing straight right now

This is a film that will live on after we are all gone. It's unfair to compare "Gods and Generals" to "Gettysburg" as "Gettysburg" covers four - five days of the conflict vs. the two years being retold in the extremely short amount of film time.
This film is for everyone. Mind you that those with very short attention spans do not like it and are easily confused by all those white men with facial hair. Everyone else will enjoy the film and come away with the sense that the war was very complex. The various ideas about why the war was fought, the many factions (Northern, Southern, Irish, Black, US Regular career military, state volunteers, etc) and how best friends before the war fought each other for very different reasons...

Send us a Special Edition Mr. Lynch!

I love this movie. I had the chance to see Mulholland Drive at the theater, where I was completely swept away for 2 hours and 30 minutes. Then I bought the dvd, and have watched the film through numerous times by myself, and showed it to friends. (Most were baffled and just gave up, *sigh*)
However, what the heck is up with this DVD? Excellent picture? Check. Excellent sound? Check. Special Features....ummm...well...
I don't really mind that there are no chapter stops, because Lynch insists that "films are not books, they do not need chapters". Thats fine by me. But, some regions in Europe have a 2 disc special edition! The dvd includes full length press conference intreviews from the Cannes (or is it Sundance?) Film Festival, among making of features and more.
Lynch's website ... sells his "Short films" and "Eraserhead" dvds exclusively in lavish special editions that come in 8x8 boxes with booklets. On both, Lynch contributes interviews. (Eraserhead is the brilliant first film from Lynch) Maybe he can treat Mulholland Drive with the same respect and release an 8x8 box with a two dvd set? Espically because there is such an amazing history to the film, being that it was supposed to be a TV show! I would love to hear what Lynch was planning to do with that idea!
I believe that some time in the future, Lynch will give us a special edition, even more so now that there are ones of Blue Velvet and Ereaserhead. I just hope Mulholland Drive is next in line!

Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 - movie DVD cover picture
Suprisingly, this movie kicks ass!!!

I've never ever liked horror films...but when I saw this movie, that changed completely!! Not only am I a big fan of Clive Barker(flippin' genius if you ask me), but the fact of using the concept of S & M and maybe even acupunture, was really brought out! Some people say this movie was way too gory and sick, but thats the way it was sapposed to be. Do you really think that there would be a film being made like this that would have pink bunnies and feathers instead of hooks and chains and Cenobites? Didn't think so. Speaking of Cenobites, those people(and/or demons) kicked [butt]!...though I would never enjoy becoming one...pins, hooks and chains tend to hurt a bit... But anyway, if you are looking for a suprisingly good film by an extreamly underrated writer, and if you have seen the first Hellraiser and are kinda sketchy about sequils, don't be! For this is a good one!!!

30-Day Subliminal Weight Loss Program Lose Fat While Your Unconscious Mind Does The Work (DVD & CD) - movie DVD cover picture
It Seems to be Working Fine for Me.

I have had this cd for a while but didn't think it would work so put it aside. After gaining another 30 lbs. - I am now 161 lbs overweight - I decided to try it for the 30 days and see what happens. I started three days ago. Yesterday, I went out for lunch and could only eat about 1/3rd of my meal and this morning, I had lost 5 lbs. already. I listen to this cd before I go to bed at night and the first thing in the morning after I get up. I am feeling better and don't get panicky about not having enough food with me all the time like I did before. I have been carrying the same bag of snacks to work with me for the past 3 days and am not tempted to eat any of them.

I am a 68 year old female and thought that I would never be able to lose again as I have been dieting since I was 20 and I've tried every diet under the sun until I am at my top weight. I usually can lose a portion of the weight by dieting, but then my body says no more, and no matter what I do, I gain it all back. But now I feel that maybe this time I can do it. If this works until I lose it all, this will be the miracle I have been praying for, for most of my adult life.

Sports Night - The Complete Series Boxed Set - movie DVD cover picture
Great Show

This series is wonderful. I don't like most sitcoms and am not very fond of sports so I can't believe I am recommending these DVDs but in all honesty I can't praise the series highly enough. It is very well written, has great drama and some of the best serious plot lines and yet there hasn't been an episode that has failed provide laughs and at times I've laughed so hard I've had tears running down my face.
As far as the DVDs are concerned, despite the fact that there are absolutely no extras and no scene selections, they are really good. You can choose the individual episodes or if you?re in the mood for a marathon you can put a DVD in and watch the shows back to back. Even better you have the whole series at your fingertips not just one season!!!!
The only thing I really dislike about these DVDs is the packaging. They are put together with two DVDs to a plastic case with three plastic cases in the box. Despite the fact that the only paper inserts they include are a couple of advertisements with the first DVD (all the information about the individual DVDs is on the outside of the cases themselves) they left the area open for inserts and put one of the DVDs on a swinging arm in the middle of the case. This really isn't a problem but it definitely looks odd almost like they couldn't make up their mind what they were going to do so they chose this awkward way of leaving all their options open. I currently own 8 TV related box sets in a variety of styles and I guess I have come to expect a certain level of visual care being place in the design of the set as a whole. I was really disappointed when I saw the way they put these together. Still as complaints go this one is very minor one.
As a last thought I read an article about the people who put this series out on DVD and it said that they felt it would appeal more to men then women. As a woman, who isn't into sports, I must say that I think that if a woman gives this a try she won't be disappointed and that it would be a great series for couples to watch together. Even if you've never seen the series before give it a try!
