Jane White is Sick and Twisted - movie DVD cover picture

Any hack can hire a decent cast for a movie backed by a billion dollars (just ask Michael Bay), but only a true artist can combine an eclectic cast of actors with a fun and inventive script. Jane White is Sick & Twisted is such a beast.

Simply Complex

This early effort of Stephen Frears is a remarkable example of the film genre that it helped to inspire. Made in 1984, it is one of the early "road" films which has become a Hollywood cliche (interesting or unusual characters driving cross country, often shot in the desert: see Thelma & Louise, Wild at Heart, etc.)
On the surface, this is a straightforward tale of a mafia style abduction and murder; and it can be viewed and enjoyed on this level only. Yet, when you look beyond the action and study the characters, the possibilities for the motivations and circumstances of their actions become infinite.
I have viewed this movie many times, and I still am trying to decipher the subtext(s): Is Braddock intentionally making the job more complex than it needs to be? Does Willie (the intended victim) really believe in the spiritual peace he claims to have found, or is it just a pretext to stay alive long enough to save himself through trickery? Who exactly is the young Spanish girl?
This is one of those films which can be viewed again and again, each time presenting something different to the viewer....

great family fun

One more to chime in - no booklet!! What the hey - there is a slot for it, but nothing there. Just the four disk, no menu or program, nothing.

The Muppet show was so much fun. Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, the Swedish Chef, with a line up of guest starts that include Charles Aznavour, Candice Bergen, Ruth Buzzi, Joel Grey,
Lena Horne, Vincent Price, Twiggy, Peter Ustinov, Paul Williams and more.

Great set, but I really think we should have the missing booklet.

Extravagant season, without a doubt!

Many people choose to hate the last two seasons of the X-Files because of it's new leading ensemble and Duchovny leaving the show. I do not.Although the show is primarily based on the character of Mulder, there is no reason to end it, just because David Duchovny feels bored. As much as I like him, I have to say that I like Robert Patrick and the character of Doggett just as much if not even more. Annabeth Gish also is brilliant as Reyes, so there's no moaning there, too. Think about this: If things were reversed, and Patrick/Gish had started the show and were now to be replaced by Duchovny/Anderson, I believe that the fans' discomfort could be even greater! So what you have here is yet another very-well thought-through season with great episodes and a strong leading cast, keeping the integrity of the story (=not getting even more illogic than already at some times...) and delivering a great final year, which honestly deserved another one or two years with the new cast. So I can only hope that Mr Carter also incorporates Doggett and Reyes into the upcoming feature film along with Mulder & Scully, since it would be more than unfair and just plain stupid to leave them out. They were and are great characters and actors, and no bad ratings, no bad reviews and no smart remarks are going to change that!Every true X-Phile can embrace this season without any hesitation, it marks the end of a TV-legend that the world had not seen before!

Don't Move, Don't Make a Sound

That is the general premise of this movie. Creatures that can hear your movements underground. That is all that I can really say without truly spoiling the movie.
This movie is definitely a hilarious uproar that even the whole family could see. It isn't that graphic at all. The first time hat I saw this movie I was about 11, maybe 12 and my whole family laughed ourselves silly to this movie. The movie is filled with good dialogue and oddly enough and decent plot, all things considered. Fairly original.
Overall a good buy, definitely get this movie.

Ben Harper - Pleasure & Pain - movie DVD cover picture
A nice introduction to a special talent

Ben Harper has organically grown his career over the last ten years through personal and intimate recordings with often great depth of meaning. Couple that with mesmerizing live performances, whether acoustic or rocking, and it is easy to understand how and why Ben Harper has built a very nice sized audience and music career of substance and quality.
Ben Harper's journey through life and music has touched so many listeners because, like most great musicians, he is sincere and honest in sharing his thoughts and feelings. That sincerity and the continuing striving to uncover, reveal and share the emotional travels one must navigate in seeking those universal truths, plus what has become a crackerjack band in "The Innocent Criminals" - along with Ben's virtuosity, is what makes Ben Harper a special artist. The ultimately hopeful and uplifting message of his music doesn't hurt either.
His music rises from such a rich soup of diverse influences that nourish his soul so that the spice of "variety" is natural and tasty in his music. You won't find this kind of soup from Campbell's, but it is mmmm, mmmm, good. Good for the soul.
In an age of manufactured bands and "hits", with one or two decent songs (maybe) on albums, Ben Harper cd's can be bought with confidence. Every Ben Harper cd returns great value of many good songs, some great and some even profound. Multiple listenings are richly rewarded. Ben Harper has released four cd's of studio recordings along with the "Live From Mars" two-cd live set. Get them all, certainly the four studio recordings, at least. Then, absolutely see Ben Harper and The Innocent Criminals when they come to your town. Everything I have said about Ben Harper is elevated exponentially in the context of a performance not just for, but with, an audience. Ben Harper is a great showman not because of tricks or gimmicks but, like all the greats through the years, because Ben and the band communicate. The best performers do this. This is music's highest potential, to communicate. And that ability to communicate is what makes Ben Harper, like all the greats - no matter the genre, such a special artist.
Oh yeah, the movie. Well, context is everything. So too with the film, "Pleasure + Pain". Long time fans will really enjoy getting to know Ben and the band even better. While this is not a concert performance (can't wait for a full blown Ben Harper concert on dvd!!!), there is enough music to allow one to get a sense and feel for the music of Ben Harper. (But you may want to pick up all his cd's, just the same.:-))
There are moments funny (Juan is especially photogenic and fun, while Ben does a mean Dr. Evil impersonation) and lovely (Ben talking about his father and performing a newly composed song with his mother, a musician). We also learn about Ben's childhood and the musical influences from his parents and his kind, sweet and musical grandparents - the owners of a music store where Ben learned about music and life (same thing, right? - it can be!).
I am rambling, but I hope this gives you a sense of what you are going to experience with Ben Harper's "Pleasure + Pain", but most gratifyingly, mostly pleasure. This a touching film. Whether this is your introduction to Ben Harper or a visit with an "old friend", I don't think it is possible for the viewer to come away with any feeling beside gratitude. Thankfulness that they saw this and learned more about music, the making of music and that there are still kind, good and thoughtful people like Ben Harper sharing such music.

Profound fairy tale

Can't wait til the DVD Comes out!!! This is my favorite book and although i already own it on VHS i will buy the DVD. It is a beautiful story and has a lot of mythological information. Based on the book by the same name, the screenplay was written by the author. The Last unicorn live action movie is scheduled to be completed in 2004. This is for the animated version, but i plan on owning both!!! Love it that much.

it's like... clapping... fireword... elves...

sci-fi is a good vehicle to make a movie about something most people 'haven't' experienced. in the context of a simple story that has nothing to do with the reader, an author can hide a lot of clues, words and metaphors that trick the user into remembering something he forgot when he was born. everything, EVERYTHING, about eXistenZ, from the way the actors talk to the lines to the fleshy living portals to the fast cuts, it's all reminder text. if you can trace back half of it, you remember more than i do. this movie is destined to go WAY over most people's radar, like naked lunch, because they've never played with anyone in this life and they don't know how to trace back a metaphor until it becomes relevant. this movie is a serious trip for serious explorers, it has a lot of -info- packed into it, it's medicinal. do you know what i mean? this reality is only a practice round! love each other and shine your eyes!
here's a riddle: what lasts for 'twenty minutes' and causes you to completely leave this body?
