Gala Of Gals

This review refers to "The Women" (1939)....

If I could only pick one year of movies to collect, I wouldn't think twice. 1939. This was a year the filmmakers consistently made movie magic. Films that still hold up today as great entertainment. Films that have those special moments we all remember. The glamorous stars defined(and still do) Hollywood. The Academy had their hands full with such great films as "Gone With The Wind", "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington", "The Wizard Of Oz", "Stagecoach", "Wuthering Heights", "Ninotchka", "Love Affair", "Dark Victory", "Of Mice and Men" and "Goodbye Mr. Chips". And those were only the nominated films. There were many other greats, among them, this little gem, starring all the best and the brightest (well, not quite all ) women "movie stars" of the 30's. And these women, along with their esteemed Director, George Cukor, have left us with a piece of cinematic history to be savored for many more years to come.

In this wonderfully charming and sometines poignant comedy, we find an upper crust circle of women, who are savvy, very modern(for the 30's),extremely chatty(gossipy), and at times can be, as Joan Crawford puts it to the others, "... there's a name for you ladies, and it isn't used in high society...outside of a kennel". The women, are all very different from each other, yet seem to thrive on the each other's highs and lows.

Norma Shearer, is Mary Haines, a happily married (or so she thought), wife and mother. As always the wife is the last to know. The circle is all abuzz with the fact the Mary's hubby Steven(who is a big part of the story, but never seen, as this is an all female cast), is having an affair with a lowly perfume counter salesgirl. It's a fun and glorious romp with this group, as we follow them through their everyday lives. We are treated to Spa treatments, luncheons, a fashion show(the only scene done in glorious color),and the divorce train to Reno, as we learn all the details of the Mary's saga, as well as the trials, tribulations and changing relationships of the others. You can't help but to become involved with their hopes, dreams and..schemes!

So here's the list: As already mentioned, Norma Shearer and Joan Crawford are the main attractions...add to them, Joan Fontaine, Paulette Goddard, Mary Boland, Phyllis Povah, Hedda Hopper, and stealing the show with a million laughs...Rosalind Russell(her outfits alone will have you rolling), and you've got yourself a really wonderful piece of cinema. Other fabulous faces of the thirties to look for include Virginia Weilder(who was also the little sister in "The Philadelphia Story", Ruth Hussey, Marjorie Main and Butterfly McQueen.

It's a treat for any lover of black and white classics, and a must have for the pleasure to view all these great ladies of the silver screen together.

Enjoy this Gala of Gals....Laurie

IT HAS FINALLY COME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This film does a great job of following the inspired Word of God with filler to make it into a movie, none of which conflicts with the Gospels as far as I can tell. EVERYONE should see this movie. Everyone should know the truth. "For God so loved the world, that he gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life." (John 3:16) You can deny Him, or look to Him for your only hope of salvation (as I do), but if you have seen this movie, you can no longer say you haven't been told that your redeemer lives.

thought provoking

One of the most subtle and beautiful film I've ever experienced. Wim Wenders has masterfully grasped a world which we all know, if not subconsciously, exists. Hats off to the wonderful mr.Peter Faulk for his cameo. The original german version has nothing to compare with the empty, glossy, American remake.

For technical merit alone, the movie is superb. I also thought the actors were so into their parts as to be that character. Can hardly wait for the release of "Tribulation Force". Flo Jean Whitehead

the worst movie i have ever seen

Larry Cohen is so incredibly unsubtle in every gaudy, ridiculous move he makes, but "The Stuff" takes the cake. This movie is hilarious. I can remember few times in which I have watched my television and had so much fun. Every cut away shot, every leap in logic, every incontinuity of this movie is burned in my brain. I have seen a lot of movies, and this is the most poorly written, directed, and executed of them all. Every time the film tries to be subversive, it hits you in the face with a hammer, and every time it doesn't do this, you have no idea what's going on. This movie is nothing, absolutely nothing, short of terrible. In every respect.

That said, I love "The Stuff". See it, and consider yourself part of the club. I guarantee you won't regret it.

Standing in the Shadows

This is the most incredible music video for any person that enjoys state of the art musicians. It is produced very professionally and the music brings the story to life. My heart goes out to all those fabulous musicians that never received the credit they deserved and were always left back stage.

The Absolute best Scrooge, Hands down (in my humble opinion)

Yes, I know the version with Alastair Sim is reputed to be the best, and while it is good, I don't even consider it to be in the same league with this Albert Finney version. First off, I totally bought Him playing an old man, when he was in reality in his early thirties, a tribute to his wonderful acting ability. Seconed, I was never so emotionally involved with any of the Scrooge characters in any of the other versions that I have ever seen. The music and the songs are in large part responsible for this. I feel the keen sense of loss expressed in song by Scrooge at the loss of his fiancee Isabel...and the bitterness of the unfulfilled life of a man whom the world would consider having everything (if you judge everything by wealth). I am 42 years of age, and am unashamed to admit that I weep every year when I sit down to watch this movie. No other representation of A Christmas Carol to me Captures the True meaning of Christmas and Christ's Life, Death and resurrection. He died for our redemption, and he is the Lord of Seconed chances, and when Scrooge awakes for the final time wondering whether or not he Dreamed the whole thing, the raw emotion that he puts into the statement "But I'm Alive"! Coupled with the pure Joy he then derives from becoming a giver instead of a taker, generous instead of greedy, and the joy these simple acts of kindness bring to others, well, I think that that's what Life is all about, Living to give, and as your seed sown multiplies, having just that much more to give! I cannot express How strongly I recommend this film to everyone, especially those with children. Here's hoping it becomes a part of your family tradition as it has mine. God bless us, every one!!!
