Food for the Soul

All Soul Food fans please contact Erica Custler at Paramount Studios (323-965-5000) to file a complaint. She currently documenting the number of complaints received to give to the powers that be to spead up season 2-5. Apparently, Paramount put season 2-5 on the back burner due to lack of that is ridiculous. I rememeber when season one came out it was sold out everywhere so I do know why they are taking so long. PLEASE CALL PARAMOUNT STUDIOS AND SUPPORT BLACK FILMS. The BET repeats are too edited and cuts out so much of the great stuff. Congratulations to Boris and Nicole (Soul Food actors) you have beautiful baby girl named Sophie.

This volume is hilarious bar none. Imagine all the 1st seasons episodes without commercials and not having to wait a week for the next one. Howard Stern's parody(t.v. show) is genious. The "Cocktopus" episode is one of the greatess of all time!

Well, i think that is was good exept for the end where Jaws was coming toward the glass and then broke it. i also thought it was very fake when he was trying to get his entire body through that small opening. But it was excellent!

Les Triplettes de Belleville est fantastique!

The challenge for the makers of this quite remarkable animated feature, apparently, was to be able to tell a story entirely through the subtle visual cues created by the animator's hand. Achieving that effect is no mean feat. Caricature, a species of visual comedy, is one way to communicate with the audience. The creators of this film exploit this technique very deftly and effectively throughout for the broadly drawn characters. However, other more subtle techniques were used to explore more deeply the principal characters.
A great deal of attention is given to the pet dog, Bruno, who by the end of the film becomes well understood and sympathetic, purely through the animators technique, being utterly speechless tho not by any means noiseless, by nature. Champion, the driven cyclist is effectively kept remote throughout. We learn a lot about Madame Souzi, the protagonist, through her eyes which are very curiously animated and suggestive of her thoughts at any given moment she's on screen. Each moment of realization or epiphany for her is marked by a tap to her glasses accompanied by an audible >click< of her frames. Very effective.
The story is punctuated and rhythmically driven by a great deal of very fine jazz music, including musical set pieces using all manner of unlikely instruments. The merging of bicycle wheel tuning with a revived nightclub act involving household appliances is a positively sublime moment.
There is much social satire, with apparent jabs even at the celebrated Tour de France: the athletes with their overdeveloped muscles laboring up profoundly steep climbs while wine swilling, overeating spectators and all manner of smoky, fuming motorcades close in around them, adding up to a hidiously gaudy spectacle. The portrayal of the cyclists is unmistakeably that of well-trained thoroughbreds utterly devoid of any descernible aim in life other than to reach the finish line first on their bikes. The gambling horseracing metaphor is further explored from the standpoint of the mafiosi, but is not without comment on the legitimate contest. Taken as a whole, a quite unflattering portrait of the bicycle racing biz.
There are so many great visual jokes in the film, it would be a travesty to single out any one of them as the best, but the car chase send-up at the dramatic conclusion of the film is quite noteworthy for it's interesting uses of gravity. Great fun!
Overall, Les Triplettes de Belleville is a fantastic visual and auditory feast that will hold up quite well under repeated viewings and hearings, I'm sure.

"I'm loving every minute with this damn crew..."

This film, although from the previews looked smart, funny and interesting was quite the opposite. It bored the heck out of me and every one else who's watched it. It's not at all funny, the whole film is really monotone between the acting, the story and the actors speaking. It's really not worth checking out unless you really cant find anything better to do, wash your hair even, much better use of your time!

Star Trek VI - The Undiscovered Country - movie DVD cover picture
A magnificent send off to the legends of space.

Having Nick Meyer at the helm once again, proves that the original chemistry among the Star Trek family could once again be recaptured. Giving a "darker" image to the movie reflects the plot of what is a teriffic way to say good-bye to the magnificent seven who have had such a great impact on our lives. With the stage being set with the erie opening score, to the final (and quite literal) sign off by the cast, Star Trek VI, The Undiscovered Country once again gives us what true Star Trek fans have come to expect. Stellar performances by Christopher Plummer and William Shatner lead to lessons in racial bigotry, and tolerance to change. Captivated by a proverbial "who done it?", the audience is kept guessing throughout the movie. That along with some spectacualr battle sequences once again gives us Trek at it's best demonstrating the awesome power of the Starship Enterprise, with it's equally awesome crew at her helm. Star Trek VI is entertaining as well as inspirational, fitting Gene Roddenberry's original pattern to the series he created. Star Trek VI is a winner for sure.

The Pinnacle of Jim Hensons Art

Of all the fabulous works Jim Henson, this is the one where he reached a zenith.

As a kid, I was so obsessed with this movie. It haunted my dreams. Every morning I would wake my parents and ask "can I watch Dark Crystal?"

The story is a fantastical masterpiece about a mystical world, and a magical crystal that controls its fate. Although one can watch the film and enjoy the story at hand, it doesnt take much to tell that there is a rich history to the world we are experiencing, in the tradition of "Lord of the Rings".

The characters are all puppets crafted and puppeteered by Henson and his team. Among them are Frank Oz, the puppeteer and creator of Yoda in "Star Wars". For the characters called the mystics, classical dancers were employed to make thier movemetns more believable. All of the puppets are so well crafted that one forgets what they really are!

The design of the rest of the film is astounding, not to mention the classical score by Trevor Jones.

This is a film to be loved by all. Experience it for yourself.

Predator 2 - movie DVD cover picture
Great Film - But It Raises Some Issues

This is a good alien-invasion movie in general, and a terrific sequel in particular. Setting the story in L.A. with protagonists Glover, Paxton and Busey made for quite a tale.
However, the film raises some extremely serious questions. When the predator first attacked, and people realized what they were dealing with, why didn't any of them pause and ask, "Why does he hate us?" The people acted terrorized by the violent actions of the predator, and struck back for the purpose of killing him. Was that sort of response compassionate, diverse, tolerant or inclusive? Rather than unilaterally attacking the predator with an army headed by three cowboys, shouldn't everyone have attempted to form a coalition (perhaps involving the United Nations) and worked to appease the predator? Shouldn't they have settled for passing some resolutions against the predator, then employing inspectors to verify his compliance? And if that had not worked, shouldn't they have given the inspectors more time? The people gave no thought whatever to the predator's cultural or religious background -- they just tried to kill him as soon as possible, apparently thinking that was the only way to protect themselves from a totally irrational being. Can you imagine how things would be in real life, if the good guys merely killed terrorists as quickly as possible, as was done in this movie? Obviously if you kill them, they can't harm anyone any more -- but is that a compassionate, inclusive, tolerant and diverse manner in which to react to a murderous terrorist? Giving the inspectors more time is the best way to deal with a predator, obviously.
