Five Stars? Yes...Just Because it's soooo Corny

Everyone has a favorite "stinker" in their home video collection, and this is mine. My girlfriend thinks I'm nuts. My friends cringe and turn the other way whenever I mention it. And my family offers me "special medication" if I try and get them to watch it...again.

But what can I say; I love this film. It's banality, shallowness, and out-and-out unscientific approach to modern man's changes and discoveries throughout the eons is just hilarious to watch. It's a ridiculous film, and so should be watched with that in mind. Why?

The story is about Atouk played by former Beatle master Ringo Starr, who is kicked out of his caveman tribe by the muscular and massive chief Tonda (probably lineman John Matuszak's only role on film, I'd guess) because he's in love with the chief's woman, Lana (a VERY busty Barbara Bach).

Once out on his own, Atouk begins to make new friends. They include Lar (Dennis Quaid), Tala (Shelley Long), Gog (Jack Gilford), Ta (Cork Hubbert), and a gazillion others. Among this rag-tag grouping comes the ability to stand up straight, how to cook a dinosaur egg, how to kill a rather large dragonfly by using someone's face (my favorite part in the film...but I felt bad for Dennis Quaid), the discovery of fire, music, drugs, homosexuality, and weapons, and just about a million years of evolution and discovery all wrapped up in one short, foolish film.

So call me a moron. Go ahead, it's okay. But this film is a great no-brainer, laugh-a-minute flick.

Now I'll go grunt in the corner for while...

Why things may be wrong now.

If you grew up in the 70s as I did, this film presents camera shots of your past, providing you were a white, middle class suburban. Products of 50s parents, these 70s people struggled for sexual freedom but with the birth of their children, found themselves confused as to the direction of that freedom now that they are role models (and their children are copying their behaviors.) It provides one reason why the 90s produced parents detached from their children: no wives waiting for their husbands at the end of a workday and sending their kids off with fresh lunches in the morning. The ice storm represents both the physical storm in the film and the one that stifles everyone's emotions.

The Heart of a Lion

How clever to have named Van Damme "Lionheart". He escaped a French legion to escape to America. He had to find a job, so he fought on the streets. After winning all of his fights (predictable), he fought a huge, unsightly man at the end in a tent! After defeating such mortals in a pool, under a bridge, in a circle surrounded with car lights and on military grounds, Van Damme couldn't control himself. He even acts for the first time, how insane! The world went mad when this Van Damme epic was released. And I have stayed that way ever since!

boo

I loved Gummo and own it on dvd also. At the same time i bought Julien after waiting about a year to see it. I was 13 and it was hard to see it. I have seen it and i feel breathless. It is a most beautiful film. The images are some of the best i have ever seen in my life on film and it is such a truthful film. Korine even used to spy cameras so the actors would interact with real people in the film. Korine is a new type of director and writer making new types of films. One of the best. Some hate him and some love him. They hate him because they have been conditioned by hollywood to only like one type of film. The others who know the truth are the real film viewers and makers. Hail Laird Henn! ( harmony's new moniker)

It was awesome

This is a great movie and Damon Wayans and Adam Sandler make a great team. The movie is about a Rock Ketes(Wayans), a cop, who befriends Archie Moses(Sandler)to get closer to a Drug King Pin. But Archie finds out later and thats when the fun starts.
In my opinion its the BEST Adam Sandler movie I have. This movie is R though for language, violence, sexual situations and beer. But that's what makes a good movie. If I were you I would go to the store and get it. You don't know what you're missing if you don't.
The best part is...

The Best Movie Of The Summer!

Spider-Man rocks! I went into the theater expecting a movie that would be about equal with one of the Batman sequels but I got much more! Not only is this better than ALL the Batman movies but it's the best Comic Book movie adaption ever! Toby Maguire is perfect as Spider-Man! He is totally believable in the role and he is one of the few comic book movie heroes that have depth. Kirsten Dunst is perfectly cast as Mary Jane and her fine acting also brings depth to her character. And Willem Dafoe, Wow! This is surely William Dafoe's BEST on screen role ever! His Green Goblin is the coolest villian ever! The rest of the cast is great as well! Sam Raimi again shows his suberb talent behind the camera and it all assembles together for the Perfect Summer Movie! I am surprised that everybody did not love this great movie! It was well deserving of it's $115 million dollar opening! When the film is over it leaves you wanting more! A sequel hits in May 2004 but until then we will all have to wait for November 1st when the best film of the year thus far hits DVD.

Goodbye, Columbus - movie DVD cover picture
"It Must Be summer if Doris is Reading 'War and Peace'..."

For years "Goodbye Columbus" has been an old movie favorite of mine, popping up sporatically on late night, broadcast television in various edited forms. I'm delighted, that this satirical 'slice of life', romantic-comedy (based on a novella by author, Phillip Roth) has now finally made it's appearence in the DVD format. The story is pretty simple. Neil Klugman (Richard Benjamin) is a guest at his Cousin, Doris' ritzy, country club. It is there, he catches sight of and is instantly attracted to the beautiful, Brenda Patimkin (Ali MacGraw). This poor young man from the Bronx asks out and starts dating the wealthy, spoiled girl from Westchester. We watch the relationship blossom over the course of the summer, as Neil falls in love with Brenda and gets involved with her crazy family. On the simplest level, this film is a satirical look at being young, Jewish and dating in 1960's suburbia. But it is also a film about being young and not knowing what you want out of life. Throughout the film, Neil is questioned repeatly about his low paying, Librarian's job and what his plans are. The truth is he dosn't really know. He dosn't want to "grub his whole life away trying to make money", yet he also finds the counter-culture answers of 1960's youth just as ridiculous. The film looks at the different view points on a variety of topics (sex, marriage, children, work) between baby boomers and the WWII generation, that came before them. This is all wrapped up in delicious satire, that pokes fun at Jewish life in suburbia (including, the most overly ostentatious wedding ever put on film). Director, Larry Peerce and Screen Writer, Arnold Schulman have created a wry movie, which is both humorus and inciteful.I love the scene where Brenda's father gives Neil a speech about the "contempt" that today's youth show for their elders. He pointly reminds Neil, that at one time he felt the same way. The casting for the film is also brillant. Actor, Richard Benjamin shines as the young man in love, who is trying to find his place in life as well as among Brenda's loud and obnoxious family. Ali MacGraw (in one of her first roles) is equally good as the spoiled, rich girl. But the cast member who really gives a memorable performance is actor Jack Klugman as Brenda's Father, Ben. He gives a great nuanced reading, showing us a father who works hard, loves his family and will do anything to make his daughter happy. The DVD itself has both good and bad points. The mastering of the picture is crytal clear, but the sound is only fair (but what do you expect from a 1969 film). The DVD is bare bones without any extras (not even a trailer). I would have loved to hear audio comentaries from either Bejamin or MacGraw. This is a great film comedy which makes for a wonderful evening of entertainment! Highly recommended!

Get this video and WAKE UP JEFF!

Maybe I'm biased being from Australia but these guys are great. My girls love them (1 and 2.5 years)and dance and sing along to their favourite songs. Each song has simple dance moves so that your toddler can easily copy Jeff(Purple Wiggle), Murray (Red Wiggle), Greg (Yellow Wiggle) and Anthony (Blue Wiggle). Captain Feathersword (the friendly Pirate), Dorothy the Dinosaur, Wags the Dog and Henry the Octopus all feature in this video as well. There is always lots of Wiggle humour thrown in as well which my girls find hiliarious! What I like about The Wiggles is that you can tell that each member is really having a good time - they enjoy what they do, entertaining children and their carers, and this shows through on their videos.
