Five Stars?! Read this and find out why!

Okay, if you've seen this you probably can't imagine giving it five stars, but I really couldn't help myself! It should get five stars for eye candy alone though! Okay, maybe there's not much of that either, except for Helen Slater, but hey, she wears some of the hottest outfits you've ever seen in this movie! Normally she doesn't turn me on, but in this movie she pulls it off bigtime! I was a kid when this came out. A real junkie for the Superman movies and totally ready to see his hottie cousin in action. I remember seeing it at the movies and I'm not sure what I thought about it at the time, but I think I liked it. As for now, well, I rented it about a year ago, and after that couldn't help but spring for the DVD 2 pack! I must admit it was a really cool experience! Sure the story is corny and full of holes, but this is such a FUN movie! Right up there with Cloak and Dagger for 80's fun! This movie delivers, maybe not in the same way as the first two Superman films, but it still delivers! I'm not familiar with the comics. My love for comic characters is confined mainly to movies and TV, with the exception of Disney, Sailor Moon, Star Wars and Indiana Jones comics, but I'm sure most comic fans would be pleased with at least some aspects of the film. It was great to see a cameo of Jimmy Olsen from the Christopher Reeve movies! This is a really fun flick, especially if you've got a group of friends or fam to watch it with!

Delivering on the Promise of a Great Director

I love Cameron Crowe. 'Say Anything', 'Jerry Maguire', and 'Almost Famous' are all deeply moving films showing a film maker learning and improving on his craft and his storytelling with each year. My only complaint was that before seeing Almost Famous I started hearing rumors about a longer, richer cut of the film. It took an edge off the original experience. I found myself noticing jumps in the storyline. Character were left unresolved that needed to be resolved. I just wanted more! Now it's here, and it was worth the wait. The DVD fills in all the holes, and leaves me waiting for a release to the big screen in ten or fifteen years.

The Best of Jim Henson's Muppets

I have loved this movie for years. Not only does it have Kermit and the others(including Robin) but it has Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, and a special appearence by Jim Henson in it. I have watched this for too many Christmas's to remember, and always cry when I see all of them together.

HBO drops the (alan) ball

What does HBO think its doing?!
After blowing our minds with an impressive dvd set, HBO has seen fit to follow it up with...
a coffee table book.
Let me reiterate: a coffee table book.
A coffee table book about fictional characters containing their fictional journal entries, fictional artwork, and I presume, some fictional e-mails and such.
Look, I love the Fishers as much as the next guy, but a collectors book is something you whip out when the series is a long-cancelled and wistful bit of neo-nostalgia and you have literally NOTHING ELSE UP YOUR SLEEVE!
Get season 2 out on DVD already! And for that matter, when will we be seeing season 4? HBO is so busy whipping up cool lifestyle accessories that it doesn't seem to notice that people are starting to forget all about it.
Is SFU falling victim to contract negotiations and boardroom-concept cool? That'd be sad, because the quickest way to ruin something cool is to try too hard to make it cool.
Hey, HBO! Lay off the baseball hats and the desk clocks and get back to the matter at hand. The show, remember?

les enfants du guerre .....

GASPARD ULLIEL as the lost-soldier has that unique Jean Cocteau inspired beauty that stays with the viewer long after seeing this 'poem to love under stress' created by Jean-Pierre Jeunet ~ there's something Chaplin/Barrault/Marceau - esque about the actor's performance.

This immensely moving portrait of WW1 and actual trench-warfare [we're fortunately spared the results of mustard gas] reminds us to look closely at the 'reasons' behind war and its aftermath.

Audrey Tatou is brilliant as the fiancee who does not give up and constantly plays little games with her conscience [?] and god to reaffirm her belief that her soul-mate is alive. [Her performance reminds us of Mamoulian's advice to Garbo "Queen Christina" - the final scene] Tatou's face alone states it all.

The landscape is vast - taking us from the WW1 trenches, through the agonies of domestic separation to quaint revenge [the bordello mirror episode]. Superior/Award winning Art Direction, Costume and score [but that's always the standard Juenet sets - perfection].

This movie should be mandatory viewing for the young ~ just as a reminder.

[Jodie Foster shines - and brings ever-new dimensions - as the misbegotten wife, facing a unique dilemma ~ all for love].

Ranks right up there with "THE VICTORS", 'THE BRIDGE", and 'SAVING PRIVATE RYAN" [with a nod to the story-within-a story in "STUNTMAN"].

Brillant backed by uplifting music score

I'm surprised this movie is not held in higher esteem by the public and critics. A perfect role for Steve Martin who plays an over the top con man minister trying to score on the local waitress. When the bus breaks down he decides to open a revival and and put some time in the effort.
But this farming town is in the depths of depression caused by a drought. Martin deserved an academy award for his brillant portrayal. Great supporting performances by Debra Winger, Liam Neeson and Philip Seymour Hoffman in his first memorable role.
The other star of this movie is the excellent score particularly near the end as the author shifts from the con to "could this be real". Not often is the score so prominent in manipulating thre viewer emotionally. I'm agnostic but the story is so uplifting that you can't help but be touched. Also the sweeping scenes of middle Americans is very inspiring in projecting average Americans going about their lives.
This movie entertains and mentally challenges the viewer. I score this movie very highly and a must see particularly if you enjoy watching the career journey of the brillant Steve Martin.

This is an awesome movie!!

Those that say this movie isn't any good obviously aren't a serious star wars buff like myself. if you are, shame on you!! This movie had a good plot, even better acting, & even better directing. It follows the story perfectly, and now the stage is set for episode two & three. Watch it and read the book - it gives a lot of background.

Baron Strikes Again! Great Program!

I have a boatload of Yoga videos that I alternate with (over 70) and I just practiced with this tape for the first time this morning. It was outstanding! You will definitely sweat and feel exhilirated after this program!

As usual Baron has put together a routine that is challenging but sane. He has a knack for being able to communicate thru the video medium that makes you feel like you almost have him teaching you in person. His is a compassionate approach which stresses working at your own pace and ability, yet he encourages you to push yourself to your edge and a just a little beyond, while being mindful not to go too far.

One important thing I particularly enjoy about Baron's videos and book is that he focuses on poses that most people can achieve to some degree as long as they put in the work. No legs behind head stuff or ridiculous pretzel poses. Still, you will be challenged with the likes of Crow pose, many balancing poses and variations of more standard poses.

The overall routine covers a lot of the Program that he lays out in his excellent book "The Power Within" which I am still currently reading and learning a tremendous amount from. If you like Baron's teaching style there is a lot to be gained from getting his book because he gets into a lot of excellent details regarding alignment and the mental approach to the practice.

Anyway, back to the video "Soul Of Strength Live":

If you are looking for an intense vinyasa Yoga experience that will thoroughly move your body thru every range of motion that you can imagine you will love this video.

Also, the "live" classroom setting is very inspiring because there are students of all levels doing various modifications during the class. I found that this was very encouraging because on any given day, depending on my level of energy or strength I will often use many of the modifications (both simpler as well as more challenging.)I find that having real students demonstrating these various modifications right in front of me was tremendously helpful.

Other excellent, relatively short but intense Yoga video's that I'd highly recommend are Rainbeau Mar's "Pure Power" and "Pure Sweat" videos from her "Sacred Yoga" 4-tape series. Yoga Zone's "Fat Burning" tape is surprising challenging considering each of it's two routines are only 20 minutes long (they feel longer because they are pretty tough :) ).

Of course if you would like something along Ashtanga Yoga lines, David Swenson's Short Forms video is amazing and has 3 routines: 15, 30 and 45 minutes plus a long deep relaxation at the end. This tape is great in and of itself (David is one of my favorite Yoga teachers) and it is also meant as a preparation to move into the Primary Series. The introductory footage is also incredibly inspiring w/David demonstrating some incredibly advanced Asanas.

If you want something a bit longer at an intermediate level, check out Sherri Baptiste Freeman's (Baron's sister) "Baptiste Power Of Yoga" video. Sherri is an outstanding teacher with a deep knowledge of yoga, and a true master teacher. Her program is very different than any other program available. It's challenging yet very realistic and her instructions are crystal clear and inspiring!
