Five Stars All-Around

I grew up with and loved the original series; therefore, I will not compare the two or disparage the original, because I love them both for entirely different reasons.

The new Battlestar Galactica strikes me as if Ronald D. Moore sat down and said I am going to write the sort of SF I have always wanted to see. Luckily for me I share his vision of what good SF should be. The characters and multilayered, flawed, and sometimes very dark, they are in every sense of the word human, and this includes the Cylons. The story is complex and is not a simplistic good versus evil scenario, in many ways the Colonials are guilty and deserving of their fate, while the Cylons are committing a horrendous act of genocide that can never be forgiven or wiped away.

It was easy for me to give the movie five stars, and I believe it is deserving of each and every one of them. If you have never seen BSG, now is the time to start, and if you are a fan of the original put you prejudice aside and realize that the similarities end with the name and enjoy what is assuredly the future of serious adult SF.

Completely Beautiful....

Most movies are either good or bad. This one was beautiful. I have never seen a movie so utterly romantic. By romantic, I do not necessarily mean "involving love." It is a rare view of a man (Hannibal) wanting nothing more than an idealized society full of classical art and refinement. The movie is a wonderful combination of mystery, action, and beauty. Even the most grotesque scenes have an odd sense of beauty and intrigue; their images will leave lasting impressions on you forever. I know they have on me. The ending is somewhat of a disappointment though. The book (read it if you haven't already, it's better than the movie) has a much more unexpected ending. The film's ending was much more predictable, and much less of a shock. After reading the book, the movie's ending was not as good as I had expected, but that is not to say it did not have any merit. Compared to other current movies, this one far surpasses the others in its artistic quality. This movie will have you watching with your eyes glued to the screen until it is over, and you will probably cry at the end. I highly recommend this film as one of the best I have ever seen.

Why wasn't this released in the UK?

My husband and I sought out Sordid Lives and went out of our way to see this movie. It doesn't appear to be playing "very" (and this is an understatement) many places. We both thought this movie full of heart, great characterizations by the actors, pathos - and it was the FUNNIEST movie that we had seen in absolutely years. When we weren't laughing we were crying (but not very often, unless we were crying because we were laughing!) The actors were all superb! Why is this movie not playing in every movie theatre in every city and why are there no reviews in newspapers such as the L.A. Times and The San Francisco Chronicle? A friend kept reminding me to see in it Palm Springs because her friends kept reminding her. Yes, we are Art Movie fans but we see mainstream movies too and this is the best of the best in our opinions. Get the word out. Sordid Lives in just Great!!!!

Couldn't forget it

I saw ?Blow Out? for the first time when I was 8. Couldn't forget it. I saw ?Blow Up? for the first time when I was 10. Couldn't forget it.I saw ?The Conversation? for the first time when I was 25. Couldn't forget it.
The reason these movies stay in your mind is simple. See the three of them and you'll understand.

Who's your favorite possum?

I don't think anyone should feel embarrassed admitting that they like this movie- it's great! Yes, I did first see it when I was in...middle school, I think, but it is SUCH a classic! Very funny- very cool, and- it's goofy! It even has cool music! (powerline...! :) )I've since graduated, and now I work in a kids-care center and see this movie ATLEAST three times a week, and I still love it! In fact, if it's my decision what movie gets put in, 9 times out of 10 this is what I'll choose!

wanna wanna be a munster...

thank god, FINALLY the munsters on DVD. my brain exploded when i found out about it and pre-ordered within minutes of finding out, but it has been in my hands for all of 10 minutes now, and i couldn't have even imagined how amazing this is start to finish. from amazing packaging, 30-some-odd episodes *including the never before seen pilot* and the packaging makes me remember why i got my first "F" in school at age 9 for writing about wanting to be a Munster when i grew up. my life is becoming complete.

Epic, Haunting and Beautiful

The story is about a man haunted by his past in being part of a massacre of an Indian tribe. He can't sleep quietly since he is punished by nightmares about how he was forced to be and participate in something he clearly saw as wrong but had no other choice. Simply put this character is another poor life destroyed by war.
He is hired by the Japanese to train the Imperial Army in the occidental ways at a time a week emperor allows his advisors to forget tradition an import the ways of "more advanced civilizations". In the process, the man gets captured by the samurai and during this captivity he begins not only to learn about their ways and philosophy, but also has peace for the first time in many years.
The Costume Design is incredibly accurate and the cinematography is absolutely superb. The music by Hans Zimmer is just beautiful, like another Gladiator epic. This movie is for people who love those little details. The production is really ambitious and works to deliver an astonishing view. This DVD is really promising with features like the "History vs. Hollywood: The Last Samurai History Channel Documentary"If you like this kind of movie where characters find themselves with a simpler but deeper view of life and appreciate a superb production, then this movie is certainly going to give you a very good three hours.
