Five Star Disappointment

One of the most clever films I've seen in years. And, the only movie that is just as good if not better than Rushmore. Wes Andreson has definately done it again. This film is a great way to get away from the usual big budget hollywood stuff. Finally someone knows how to make a good film.

Music of the Heart (Miramax Collector's Series) - movie DVD cover picture
Parts Of This Movie Will Make Your Sing

MUSIC OF THE HEART, the story of violin teacher Roberta Guaspari and her fight to save a music program in East Harlem's school system, is based loosely on the 1996 documentary SMALL WONDERS. Ms. Guaspari believed, as did her principal Janet Williams, that studying music and art, in this instance the violin, teaches children discipline and provides them with a sense of self-worth and that the arts should not be treated as frills but rather an integral part of a child's edcuation.

Meryl Streep, nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of Ms. Guaspari, is as always magnificent. She favors the instructor a little; but more importantly, she takes on her walk and speech patterns so as to actually become her. While Cloris Leachman, Angela Bassett and Aidan Quinn give respectable performances, the movie belongs to Ms. Streep.

The film adds new material not seen in the documentary; some of it works better than others. The relationship between Quinn and Streep-- she and her two young sons have been deserted by her husband-- could have been left out entirely without much having been lost. On the other hand, the death of a student from a drive-by shooting and the child who has to leave Streep's class and move away because her father is abusing her mother, while fictional-- at least they are not in the documentary-- add touches of necessary realism and keep the movie from becoming one-sided.

The highlight of both this movie and the documentary [included in the DVD version and is not to be missed] is the concert at Carnegie Hall by the students, along with some of the great violinists of the world, to raise money to keep the violin classes continuing. Apparently the concert was the brainchild of Arnold Steinhardt of the Guarneri String quartet and his wife who came to Guaspari's aid in her fight to save the violin program.

Ms Guaspari's vision, refreshing and heart-warming, is simple through profound: teachers make a difference, discipline is essential to learning, music is an integral part of education, all children can learn to play the violin, one should play from the heart. We could use more movies like this one, particularly in times like these when movie houses show documentaries entitled ENRON and THE FOG OF WAR while the casualties from the War in Iraq daily continue to rise and no weapons of mass destruction are found.

Parts of this movie will make you sing.

A MUST SEE

Young GUnd is another Brat Pack type movie with lots of action. It is great for mindless entertainment, a light snack of a movie. The story and situations seem a bit contrived and ridiculous, the acting sometimes wooden, but overall, a nice movie to vegge out to.

Great film -- but why get 4 copies?

i don't understand why anyone would spend $100 to get 4
copies of the same film. you'd have to be an avid, or
perhaps unhinged, collector.

but a great film (one copy is enough though)

''A Star'' Is Whole Again!

This beautifully restored print of the classic musical includes over an extra hour of scenes, photos and dialog that was cut from the film after it's premiere, despite objections from director George Cukor and Judy Garland.
Sadly, much of the footage no longer exists, and this is why they have had to reconstruct the scenes with photo stills and audio tracks, making the film seem less choppy, and the story makes more sense and flows more easily with the cut scenes restored.
Judy Garland should have REALLY won the Oscar for her role, and her rendition of the bluesy 'The Man That Got Away',is magic.
James Mason adds a new dimension to his Norman Maine, and the suicide scene is tenderly done.
Also featured are the songs 'Born In A Trunk'and 'That's What I'm Here For'

The Love Letter

I stayed home from the office today and watched Kate and Leopold, another time travel movie. Aferwards, I got out my video of The Love Letter to watch. I was in sentimental mood, and I thought what the heck, I haven't watched it years.
Although, I liked Kate and Leopold, The Love Letter is so much better and touched me more. I realized how much more, when I started crying when Scott sees the grave of his beloved Elizabeth and reads these words that are etched on her tombstone "I never forgot". Thank you Dan Curtis for making such a beautiful movie.

The Matrix Revisited - movie DVD cover picture
Love the Matrix? You'll love this...

One of the best and coolest documentaries I've ever seen. Anyone who loves the matrix, or loves 'technical but not overly technical' documentaries will love this.
One thing I love about Revisited is how much it feels more like a separate film from the Matrix; at the moment I'm watching Revisited more than the movie, and enjoy it every time.
Also, the movie is divided into chapters (just as every other DVD is...) except on this DVD, each chapter is a separate sub-documentary that focuses on a spacific aspect of the film (example: special effects, costumes, etc.) Come to a chapter on the DVD that you don't think will interest you? Hit the ol' skip button on your remote and you can go to the next fascinating sub-documentary.
Another thing I love about this is how much closer you feel to the cast and crew when you are finished watching this movie; you see how they think, train, work, film, imagine, create, design, build, and just about everything else that has to do with the matrix films (yes, it briefly discussed the trilogy near the end.) You feel higher than other Matrix nerds after you watch this simply because you know a few more random facts about it than they...and I love that feeling.
