Crossroads Guitar Festival - movie DVD cover picture
First of probably Three Volumes

This is a remarkable set of DVD's, for sure! Any show sponsored by the World's preeminent guitarist, Eric Clapton, is sure to be excellent! But, this show had unrealistic expectations of being entirely presented on this two-pack DVD set, I think. There were just too many quality artists involved to permit each of them to be adequately accomandated on this set. I believe that there will be much more yet to be seen! The "plum" of the festival was certainly the one song that Jeff Beck performed with Clapton, and it was mysteriously deleted from this set dramatically just days before it went into production, (if the media is to be believed). A second set featuring this performance, along with a good helping of Buddy Guy's set, is certainly yet to come! Actually, there is enough of the best stuff omitted in this set to allow for a second "Crossroads" release to be the better of the two!!
I think that Clapton did a good job in all his participation, (at least in what is on these two DVD's), with the one exception of not giving more time to Vince Gill. Gill is the best guitarist in country music, and I had hoped that he would have been able to really exhibit his playing skills at this guitar-oriented event. Usually, he has to focus on his vocals, that is what made him such a huge figure in his genre, but at the expense of his playing time on stage. His guitar-work is incredible, when he has time to display it. I had even thought he might have played some more rock-oriented selections, just to show what he can do!
The single best song presented on this set is the one solo number by Robert Cray. It really stands out among the selections on the second DVD. ZZ Top was a good choice to end the DVD, but they butcher the lyrics, though the two songs were well chosen. Where were Tommy Shaw, & Styx? I heard they were awesome at this festival! The young guys were able to reach a different audience, I think. I was particularly impressed by Jonny Lang, who sings as well as he plays. Vai's performance was well-planned, and Mayer was an interesting addition. But, what was James Taylor doing there?
This entire festival needs to be released!! Or, at least much more of it!

Rage Against The Machine is the best band, probably ever, they have so much talent. If you've never seen them live, then you owe it to yourself to, even if its just with this dvd. People have mentioned the documentary foorage being unnecesary, but its so great to see what they;re doing this concert for. Its worth at least this proce just to see Tom Morellow play though. And teh censorship can be turned off if you turn on the closed captioning, at least that swhat worked for me. Any rage fan must have this dvd.

BLACKDVDDVD - I was there

It was a great night. We were there at The Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne. We were warned that the band started sharp at 8.00pm. It was the third and last night of recording this DVD. About 9.15pm The Eagles took a 20 minute break. They returned to the stage and the whole set finshed after 5 encores at 12.30am. Now for US$80.00 name another band that plays for 4 hours plus - is spontaneous, exciting and just magic. What a night and what a must have DVD. Can't wait. If The Eagles are not your bag this concert was electric, on stage live they have it - don't miss this concert just for the sheer energy of this show. When The Eagles toured Oz they played sell out concerts coast to coast to national critical acclaim. Share the joy, share the excitement - these guys still have it - one and all - the performance - the lyrics, the musicianship - am I raving - you got the message!!!!

Armageddon - movie DVD cover picture

This is one of the most spectacular movies I have ever seen. It had me off my seat the whole time with its intensity, thrill, and emotion. It is deffenetly a must see movie. When NASA realise there is a meteor the size of Texas heading strait for Earth in just 18 days, that could end all life on Earth, they know they have to do something.By this time in the movie I am overcome with suspence on what may happen. They decide to take a team off roughneck oil drillers to drill a whole and drop a nuclear warhead into it's core. The drillers are divided into two groups to go into space. As soon as they get into space, 1 of the space ships goes down because of too much debri from the meteor. There are only three survivors from that accident. The other space ship lands on the meteor and begins to drill, but can not get to the wanted dept without help. The three survivors from the first space ship come to the rescue and help them drill to their wanted dept. In all the caos the remote to detinate the bomb has been wrecked so somebody has to stay on the meteor to detinate the warhead sacrificing himself to save the world. In the end all is good and well because of one brave man who saved the world.

One of the best!

I bought this video for my preschooler and toddler, but I ended up enjoying it as much as they did, if not more. It's great for young children; since, it is really three stories in one. It keeps them interested.

A wonderful Adaptation of the Novel

Today I saw 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban'. I had mixed feelings about it. On one hand, I liked the new director's more fluid, visceral style. The soundtrack was great, and I'll be singing 'Something Wicked this Way Comes' for years LOL.
But as far as the plot went, it really fell short. This book, more than any of Rawling's other books, is first and foremost a perfectly crafted mystery story. In order to have a good mystery, all the clues need to be in place. Several lines of dialogue and several key scenes that were vital to the plot were removed from the film version. My sister (who has read the book) had to explain the plot to my mom (who has not read the book).
For instance, although a big deal is made out of the Marauder's map, the film never tells us who Padfoot, Prongs etc. are! The significance of Harry's patronus' form is therefore missing from the film.
Also, in all storytelling, if a deux ex machina is to be used, in this case Hermione's time turner, it's existance must be firmly established long before it intervenes to save the day. The book did a far better job of this, but the film only briefly mentioned Hermione's strange behavior. In the novel, she becomes ragged and run down. She is constantly missing. In fact, Hermione appears less in Azkaban than in any of the other books. In the movie, they gave her less problems, and more screentime. It was an o.k. decision, I guess, but not at all like the book.
The story felt rushed and incomplete, with gaping plot holes left unfilled. The best thing about this movie is that it made me appreciate the origional, masterful book more.
And I want Chris Columbus back.

The Spike Jones Story - movie DVD cover picture
At long last...

Finally a great Spike Jones biography on DVD... a biography that just happened to originally be released about 15 YEARS AGO!! ;) ... BUT ANYWAY!
The great thing about this DVD is that it was filmed (or video taped anyway) when George Rock was still amoung us. I'm just a fan in my 20's but I have a great respect for George Rock's talent in the city slickers... this biography was actually dedicated to his memory (He obviously died shortly after this was put together).
I loved this DVD, while much of the footage was simply from Spikes TV show... there's also a lot of rare footage. Interviews with Sir Frederic Gas and Billy Barty are a plus... not to mention the insights of a younger Dr. Demento.
Buy this DVD... It's a great price and good for multiple viewings (if you're a crazy fan like me anyway)

anything less than 5 would be blasphemous

simply life changing.this ISNT a MOVIE.this ISNT HOLLYWOOD.sure, mel made a ton of money.but who doesnt go into a venture without planning on reaping some profit?fact is,he has poured roughly $25 mil of his own money and 5 hard/dedicated years into this project without any assistance.there was no guarantee that this would be the financial behemoth it has turned out to be.this had the signs of either a sure flop or a 1 weekend wonder.this was neither.this IS the story of the last days of Christ.depending on your spiritual beliefs, this is as accurate as it gets.the bad publicity this received was the anti semetic guff.if thats is your stance then you must also accuse the Bible.mel didnt add his own take on the event.its all there for you to compare.right down to the number of lashings,it is very accurate.again, thats if you are a christian.jews tend to think otherwise, hence the argument.they also WRONGLY assumed that this would flame the,i guess, already burning anti semetism and cause a huge riot.were still waiting.if this is the wronp depiction, then let someone from the jewish faith make their version.i was extremely fortunate to experience this in a theater.i brought with me a couple of equally macho but non believing friends.we should have brought kleenex.there wasnt 1 person in the place not sobbing.i told my macho friends that there was a possibilty of waterworks.they mocked soon as they got out the whip from hell(with demented looking fish hooks at the end)i felt the eyes get watery.i am not worth half of one second of what Jesus went through.that is what kept going through my mind.this film is all about ones own personal faith and belief.if youre curious and/or want to see if youll be as moved as others, then you probably wont be.i can only go by my own faith and what i experienced from the non faithful bunch i went with.i own this but have yet to open it.this isnt a film that 1 think i can watch more than once.this is,IF youre a christian.if youre not, then you really cant judge this on proper merits.i am truly in mels debt for him creating this masterpiece.

Rabbit-Proof Fence - movie DVD cover picture
Courage and determination during a dark chapter of history

Between 1905 and 1971, the Australian government had a horrible policy. They forcibly removed all half-caste Aboriginal children to special training schools. The grown daughter of one of these children wrote a book about her mother's experiences. This film is an adaptation of that book.
The story takes place in 1931, when Molly, then 14, her sister Daily, then 8, and her cousin Gracie, then 10, are literally torn from the arms of their mothers, put in a cage, and taken 1,200 miles away to a school which is actually a sort of prison. Here, they are forbidden to speak their own language, they have to attend a Christian church, and are taught the ways of the white Australian culture around them. Led by Molly, the girls run away. And most of the film is the odyssey of their trek back home, following the rabbit-proof fence that bisects Australia, constructed to keep rabbits out of the pastureland.
The villain is clearly the white director of the school. It is amazing, but he actually believes in the racial theories that were prevalent at the time. He believes he is helping them and plays his role well, coming across as stupid and misguided rather than evil. The Aboriginal girls are all unknowns, and terrific actresses, as are the women who play Molly and Daisy's mother and grandmother. The courage and determination of the girls during their three-month journey, the people they meet along the way, and their efforts to dodge the trackers who have been sent to retrieve them by the school, is truly inspiring. This is all set against the backdrop of the Australian outback; the cinematography certainly captures its beauty.
The film is 94 minutes long and moves quickly. I immediately identified with the girls and felt their fear as well as their bravery as they made their way across the Australian continent. In a postscript to the story, we learn more about their lives. It did not turn out to be pretty. But two of the girls have survived into their nineties, and we meet them briefly. They are strong women with weathered faces, one of them walking with a cane, but clearly at home in their Outback surroundings.
The film is a lesson in inspiration and courage as well as a geography and history lesson about Australia. I loved it and highly recommend it.
