Finally -- now produce the new series

This is one of my favorite tv shows of all time. Wonderful to finally have them all to watch. And this is glorious fullscreen, like originally televised, unlike the wretched DVDs of the two mini-series (V and V the Final Battle) which are in letterboxed only editions, unlike the fullscreen versions originally broadcast.
It is also worth correcting something from one of the reviewers below, in a factual sense. Reviewer "dpcole7" (Oak Park Heights, MN United States says that at the start of many of the episodes of V, The Series, there is "Some silly bogus TV announcer at the start of the show, doing his best not to laugh at the script he'd been given to read." That is NOT some "silly bogus TV announcer"--that is Howard K. Smith, an actual Tv network news anchor at the time, which lent a real air of reality to the series to viewers at the time, who knew who he was.
Buy this and watch it, and let's encourage the network to make the follow up mini-series which is supposedly in the works.

NICKELBACK F***IN RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I grew up on Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath.Of course, I heard a couple of NB's songs recorded in studio and I always thought that it was great job of sound engineer. These guys have no such skills as Page, Plant, Lord, Pace and Gillan had, but it really does not matter. They have most important for rock band thing. It's called "drive". I've bought this DVD for my daughter's 15th birthday. And now I'm afraid to tell her that IT IS MINE!!!

One of the best versions of Jane Austen

This is one of the best interpretations of Pride and Prejucice. Everything about it is wonderful - the acting, the sets and costumes, the attention to historical accuracy. And then there's Colin Firth. He's reason alone to buy the set. I recommend it highly.

The Jungle Book

My whole family simply loves this movie. As I stated in the title I give this movie 100 stars. It was Walt's last and arguably one of the best pieces of entertainment to be produced while Walt was still alive. Can there be a more perfect matching of characters and voices in an animated film? I don't think so.

Shallow Hal - movie DVD cover picture
shallow hal

"Shallow Hal", the latest movie from the Farrelly brothers, is something of a departure for them. It's a kinder, gentler work from the team that made the idiotic "Dumb and Dumber", the wacky, raucous "There's Something About Mary" and the rather vindictive "Me, Myself and Irene". Again, they take on a sensitive subject. This time it's obesity. Instead of loading the picture with fatso jokes, which is undoubtedly what many of their fans were hoping for, they chose instead to focus on tolerance and on the idea that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The results are mixed. It could have been a lot funnier, but that might have also made it mean-spirited. It's charm and warmth make up somewhat for its general lack of laugh out loud humor.
As the movie opens, young Hal is traumatized by his father's deathbed admonition to pursue only beautiful women. Soon we see the grown up Hal [Jack Black], who has taken the advice seriously. He is indeed shallow, chasing only the most desirable women [read bimbos]. Never mind that Jack himself is no looker. One day he gets trapped in an elevator with real life inspirational speaker Tony Roberts, who convinces him to start looking for the inner beauty in women. When he meets Rosemary [Gwyneth Paltrow], he is instantly smitten. What he sees is, well, Gwyneth Paltrow, What the audience and his friends see is the real Rosemary, who weighs in at about 300 pounds. At first she is offended by his insistence that she is beautiful. After she accepts that he is telling the truth, one of the oddest love affairs in the history of movies begins.
Jack Black, in his first real starring role, makes Hal an interesting character. Paltrow is excellent as the Rosemary Hal imagines he sees and, in a few scenes, as the much more substantial real Rosemary. Jason Alexander is hysterical as Hal's idiot best friend, Mauricio.
It can be argued that the Farrellys only further the stereotype of what defines beauty by casting Paltrow as Hal's ideal woman. The fact is that the last half of the movie would not work if he did not have an `ideal' Rosemary in his head when he finally sees the woman she really is.
I think "Shallow Hal" is the Farrellys' best movie after "There's Something About Mary". And it's certainly a winner in an era of lame, uninspired gross-out comedies.

This movie is better than Five Stars!!

I saw this movie as soon as I could get it from the video store, and I had to tell them to order it for me back in the eighties!! This is the ONLY movie I have seen more than five times, and I've seen it at least 20 times! This is absolutely the best sci-fi movie I have ever had the priviledge to watch, and I've seen them all!!! From the very beginning leave your definitions of concepts tucked somewhere under a distant grey matter fold in your brain, and watch and absorb the completely new ones beamed at you in the movie!! The concept of folding space to travel from one end to the other via mental projection is a believable answer around light speed-time-space limitations posed by Einstein and Hawkins, et al, and one that intrigues my imagination!! Many kudos to the participants that made this film epic! And the voice modulation-amplification weapons idea is stupendous!! It definitely works for me!!!

Kandahar - movie DVD cover picture
A journey in the land of Taliban horror and oppression

This Iranian film was made before the horrible events of 9/11 etched the name of Kandahar into our consciousness. This film is NOT a documentary. It is a fictionalized story of an Afghan woman, Nafas, a Canadian journalist, who returns to Afghanistan during the reign of the Taliban to search for her sister.
Filmed in Iran, it nevertheless gives us a feel for the bleak sun-dried landscape of Afghanistan. Here, the woman wear burkas, they are not allowed to go to school, and they must constantly look out for land mines. During the course of the film Nafas has disguises herself as a fourth wife of a man returning to Afghanistan from Iran, is helped by a young boy who has to eke out a living the best way he can after being thrown out of a religious school, sickens and meets a doctor who speaks English and joins a one-armed man and a group of women on their way to a wedding in Kandahar.
There is horror and oppression everywhere, not just for the women, but also for everyone under Taliban rule. Saddest of all are the victims of the land mines. There are several scenes in a Red Cross station about this, with the dozens of one-legged men who are in constant pain and who wait for the helicopters to drop prosthetic legs from the sky.
Nelofer Pazura, a real-life Canadian journalist who was born in Kabul and therefore speaks both Parsi and English, plays the part of Nafas. She is beautiful with wide sad blue eyes and she plays this role as if in a dream, her face expressionless whenever she lifts her burka. The film is upsetting and not for everyone and some of the images will haunt me for a long time. I do recommend it. But don't expect to leave the theater smiling.

Great Mind candy, not eye candy

This movie was very good as is challenges you to keep up on what is happening. There are two realeases of the movie on DVD, one is the American release, one from Canada. I'm assuming this is the Canadan release which is the verson I recommend getting (there are two listed here at Amazon). There is no movie difference, but the canadian release has extras like director commentary, documentaries, etc. and the US version has nothing like this.
