Dress to Kill

Was introduced to Eddie by one of my roommates in college, and while I am always a bit skeptical of stand up comedians, I fell in love with Eddie's personality and humor immediatly. I wore out my copy on VHS because I have watched this over and over again, and find myself rolling on the floor time and time again. Although many are put off by my favorite "Executive Transvestite", look past that momentarily and you will be glad you did. Have introduced it to many many friends, who all also highly recommend... =)

Lots of flair and class--go see this movie pronto!!

The best way to enjoy this movie is to take it like it is and not try and do comparisons to the director's other films. Night wastes no time in diving into the plot of this movie, right from the very start of the flick. Mel Gibson is so moving as a jaded former Catholic priest, and his love for his children in the film is very engaging. The sweet little girl who plays his daughter will have you laughing and saying "awww" a dozen times or more, and Rory Caulkin is pretty good too as a kid with more wisdom than most his age, and who suffers from asthma. There are many funny moments in the film, where humor is used in the oddest ways. I was surprised at the sci-fi touch that this movie had, but for me the suspense of not getting to see the aliens until towards the end(in the beginning they are shadows and shapes) made the movie better than if the aliens would have been shown right off the bat(I swear I am not giving anything away with that comment--the plot of the movie is a possible alien attack via the crop circle evidence). The best part about this film is Night's use of subtle wisdom, subtle humor, and plot detail. This is a movie that you will walk out of the theatre thinking about, and you will be absorbing meaning over issues dealt with, in addition to thinking about how touching the whole thing was. Please don't listen to the negative critics--this movie is worth all 5 stars!!

Inspiring beyond words...

If I had art supplies with me, I'd start to paint my thoughts -- and I'm not even a painter. I want to create art that does indeed change the mirror we hold up to reality and art that gives us a chance to think. Really think. As a theatre actor/director who is constantly inspired by Julie Taymor, I'm overjoyed to say this film won't disappoint anyone. The music, the voices, the tones, the colors and the details (for a lady libra such as yours truly, it all matters)... the acting and passion of Salma and Alfred -- along w/the team of other players... I have always wanted to meet Frida and thru this film, we can all meet a part of her. Kudos to Salma for believing and being patient with this project. The time, energy and love is what shines thru. And you DO NOT have to be a Frida lover to appreciate this film.

Amazing Sound

This DVD release sounded great on my surround system. If I stand in the middle of my living room it's like Freddie sitting beside me and singing. Really life-like, I'm amazed what the producers have done with this DVD, regarding that this consert is taped over 20 years ago. Only problem with the sound is the low bass level, but that can be corrected if you have a good sound system. Many versions of the songs are great, especially "Save me", "Keep Yourself Alive" and "Now I'm Here".
I recommend this DVD to any Queen fan.

a powerful and unusual story

you will be amazed at Paul's ability and dedication to learning the tuvan language, despite extremely limited resources (being blind, and having to translate from english to russian, and then from russian to tuvan! it was a huge challenge). This is a powerful story told in the spirit of Richard Feynman's life, which was also spontaneous and full of meaning. The tuvan throat singing is simply amazing; I still have no idea how they do it. Paul's live performance in the concert is astounding, especially because he winged the whole thing! If you don't appreciate something this good, I don't know what to say. Just go get it, and see that truth is stranger (and better) than fiction.
Also get the soundtrack, especially if you were impressed by the music. And get Paul Pena's New Train cd that recently came out, which is a lost classic that was just released by his record company.

No stretch to claim that F&G is the best T.V. series EVER!!!

Most critics put this show as the best of the 1999-2000 season. Yes, even above Sorpranos. What's more is that even, as of this writing, after this show was moronically cancelled by NBC, this show found a hugh and cultish following on college campuses. I was just starting college in August 2001 (University of Chicago) and during the first weeks (before 9/11) the campus had many showings of F&G. As time went on, more and more people crowded around to watch and what's more was the amazing silence during, which was only broken by the laughter (which of course there was a lot of). After 9/11 none of us wanted any showings until after the holidays because admittingly we felt guilty about laughing and not thinking about the tragedy. Our dorm started showing it again in January 2002 and the get togethers have not stopped. This show will stick with everyone, because the story's are (collectively) all of ours. The acting, all around, on all levels was phenomenal for television and a list of standouts is impossible. Just to say that some careers that were launched here are Linda Cardellini (Legally Blonde and Scooby-Doo) and James Franco (James Dean & City by the Sea). The parents on this show may not have been main storylines but they were extremely important and extremely well played by Becky Ann Baker, Joe Flahery, Amy Aquino and I feel terribly upset by this but I cannot remember the actress who played Bill's mother so brilliantly, she must be mentioned. I have worn out my tapes to near destruction and the version being shown on ABCFamily Channel are terribly cut up and dull looking. A DVD would be true justice to something like Freaks and Geeks and with some extras that only the creators could give. I will breathe now.

Band of Brothers is the best Waorld War Two film, documentary or mini-series. The actors are slightly unknown and incredable. This is the most powerful story out there. Buy this series despite the cost. It is more then worth it.

I found this production to be most enjoyable. There are some weaknesses in individual cast members, but the multi-racial casting is an unusual touch that works quite well. The sets and costumes are whimsical in true fairy tale fashion and you can't lose with a Rogers and Hammerstein score.
Still, the real news here is Paolo Montalban - an acting, singing, powerhouse with an on camera presence that steals every scene he's in. In time, I believe, the introduction of Paolo to the viewing public is what this production will be famous for.

By far the best of the trilogy

Okay. I saw this movie in November of last year, and even had the good fortune to meet Mr. reggio himself (I told him to watch "Dancer in the Dark", he said he loved Von Trier and I almost collapsed right there). Anyway, the movie. Of all the opening scenes in the history of cinema, I'd say the opening scene of "Naqoyqatsi" ranks in the top ten most beautiful of all time. The first image you see is an MRI image (made 3-D) of "The Tower of Babel", a painting by a famous Italian painter. It zooms in to show the incredible detail of the painting as the quite frankly INSANE music playing starts building up. Then begins a flawless, completely fluid transition from this amazing image to one even more amazing and, in my opinion, the most powerful in the film - the countless broken windows of an abandoned white building in Detroit. Now, when I saw this the first time, I had no idea where this building was or what type of building it was (someone here said it was a railroad station, though it looked to me like an apartment building). I believe the POINT is the anonymity, or better yet, the universality of the destruction and decay present in this image. It could be anywhere in the world. As Yo-Yo Ma's cello strikes out some of the most unforgettable music you'll ever hear, the camera sweeps to show the face of the ruined building in its entirety and believe me, it's one of the most haunting and beautiful images in the history of film. That's the BEGINNING of this movie! For the next 90 minutes, you're shown a panoply of images that define our times in all their confusion and strife, and all I can say is you probably won't get them out of your head for at least a week after seeing it. How can people call this a disappointment? What MAKES this film so beautiful is the integration of the real and the unreal, of the reality behind the image and the artificiality of the image itself. I believe this film is the synthesis of the trilogy, and that the filmaker's message is that life out of balance ultimately BECOMES life as war. Now, let's just hope it gets out on DVD soon.
