Im a big Sting nut, and I have to say that Stormy Monday is Sting's best acting Movie! The preformance he gave to this movie made him like he was in the movie business his whole life! Not Music.
Its special to see that the setting was in Newcastle, England (Sting's hometown)

Moving. Hits on many levels. Perfect

I have never reviewed a film on Amazon but I am compelled to because this is such a fine one. I did not expect, what I feel to be one of the most eloquently told and moving stories, to come in animated form.
Sure, I've seen almost all of Miyazaki. My kids love them and I love, for instance, the playfulness of Totoro and how Kiki finds her self confidence. And then there is the technical brilliance of, say, Spirited Away.
But Takahata's Grave of the Fireflies is a cut above. It shattered me emotionally, yet somehow uplifted me spiritually. I don't see it as a sad movie, devoid of hope, as someone wrote here. It is a beautiful tragedy with a message to tell. It is a film for adults and it hits on many levels and I am still seeing meaning in it after three times viewing it.
The hope comes from the love of the brother and sister for each other and their dignity. Despite their many hardships they are, with a few exceptions where Saita completely breaks down, well mannered. Meanwhile, everyone they meet cares only for themselves, or at least shows a rude ambivilance towards the two. The contrast is incredible. Yet, judgement is not passed upon them. It is left to us to judge. Nor is judgement passed on the enemy, whom the closest we get to, is seeing them as they streak overhead in their bombers.
Also, the hope is shown by the "spirit" Saita and Satsuko who shadow the real characters at important crossroads in their lives and in the very last scene as ghosts watching over modern Japan.
But the movie is not about Japan or World War Two or even War itself. It is about compassion and the human spirit. As a film, it is most like Schindler's List and the same emotion and depths of emotion I felt in that movie I feel with Fireflies. Everyone should see this movie.

The movie Spielberg could only make

This movie is in my opinion, the most important movie of all time. This movie could be a social lesson about racism. I would hope that after viewing this movie, we could really all learn to get along. It is powerful, moving, and brillant. The realism of the Holocaust is shown with brutal honesty. From the scene where the children in the camps are removed by the terrified parents, to the women thinking they are in a gas chamber to realize they are actually in a shower room, Spielberg gives a glimpse of the horror of one of the most dark moments in humanity. The acting is all first rate. Liam Neeson gives a beautiful portrayal of a man who changes his view of "his workers". From a entreprenuer who is seeking the bottom line to a man who is on a mission to save as many people as he can, Neeson captures the role. Ralph Fiennes gives a chilling performace. To play a man who does not care about the value of another human being that is not of his ilk...no words can describe it.
From a critical standpoint, any other movie Spielberg does may make more money or be more popular, but THIS movie will be his artistic impression that is left in the industry. From a personal view, one of the final scenes when Schindler is leaving the plant and realizes he could have done more always touches me. This movie is a must for movie lovers.

"STILL RAIN"

When I was a young kid, Japanese animes were always on Tv. They were in series of course and not only children but grown ups also enjoyed it and after every episode we couldnt wait for the next week. Marco, candy, heidi, vikings, maya the bee ,pinnochio, flying goose and countless others took us to the dream world. They were nothing like the super cyber Akira and the rest. They were very well designed and stories were brilliantly written. Most of these animes however were sad or had sad moments which were basicly about wars ,deaths, losses and separation. But mostly (not all of them) ending was optimistic and happy. In Japan unlike the west, animes are not only made for kids. I personally believe that grown ups especially youth adores them and they watch it on big screen.Grave of fireflies is an example of pre Akira period anime.Yes it is a sad anime because firstly it is an anti war movie. Secondly you exactly know whats coming from the very early screens of the film. It is based on the last days of Japanese empire in ww2 when Japan was under bombardment of US planes. Our hero is a little kid who tries to help his little sister and survive in those days of hardship. Fire bombs rain on the city, food is very less, and accomodation is burnt and families are all shattered. His mother dies during a raid and high rank officer father never replies back from his ship of the imperial navy. He remembers the pre war days and days of happiness and pride when they were together and how nation was strong.these are presented in wise falshbacks throughout the film. War time is presented with its all cold reality. Families are shattered, people are changed and become selfish, basic needs of life is hard to find.He buys, borrows and steals food for his little sister and for himself even dangering his life during air raids. When he brings his sister to the doctor, doctor says she needs nourishment not medicines. He shouts back "where is the nourishment ?"As I mentioned, the flashbacks really work well, especially pouring huge rivers of emotion to the viewer when loved ones die. Director uses all the advantages af an anime and makes them as dramatic as it can be. People are represented as fireflies who drop and die so quickly and so young. They light the area that surround themselves for a while and after go off. Like a group of fireflies, they are put in mass graves together.During the film we never see anything from the front and battlefields. We only see the bombardments and the damage done to the civilians. Director shows here that home front is also no better than the frontlines and death is hiding in every corner, dressed in many ugly costumes. Director's way of painting this movie as an anti war film also make us to think about other nations who suffered even greater pains during the war. Mothers, children, hunger, illness and death are all international issues of war and director manages to capture the conceptof an non pretentious anti war film very well. Actually Grave of fire flies with its all cold reality and human warmth , succeeds where most of the anti war movies fail. Maybe because of anime's freedom and limitations, maybe not.It is a very sad move so better prepare yourself before the film If you are calling yourself a hardened person (If you are going to watch it with a group) . Otherwise make sure to prepare some tissues.War does not kill only soldiers but also many fireflies. Fireflies like us and our families.

Cold War Comedy Classic

Great comedy with a wonderful messege!! Perhaps those who do not know much about the Cold War might require a bit of information to better appreciate the context of the humor and story, but it is not necessary. Besides, the "extra" on the DVD with Director Norman Jewison discussing the film will help alot BUT -- see it afterwoods (then watch the movie again, if you like) because it has many clips from the movie and some "secrets" are revealed -- it presumes you already watched the movie, so wait till after you see it to check this interesting piece out. No matter what, the movie is still a hoot, and fun for all. BTW, I recently watched the movie with a Russian (who enjoyed it immensely) and he confirmed that the Russian characters all truly spoke the language, although Alan Arkin was clealy not a native speaker. On the other hand, he believed Theodore Bikel had a great accent, so he wasn't sure about him, while most of the others appeared to be "real" Russians. Have fun with this one!!

Quite possibly Better then the Book

No, you rarely ever do see something like that, but for Hearts in Atlantis, the movie, it is right up there with the book. First and foremost, the way the actors brought the characters to life. Anthony Hopkins...well, what can you say? The man is brilliant, playing right into the character who is extremely different, yet unique. He is amazing in this role, as always. Anton Yelchin...definitely brings everything that anyone could have asked for in his performance of Bobby. He was great as well. And the girl who played Carol was great as well, as was Bobby's mother. The acting was extremely high, much better then you'd find in most other movies.
I never enjoyed the book all too much, and I'm a big King fan. But this movie brought all the important aspects of the book-save everything about Vietnam-and made them known. In places where King took five pages to get something done, the movie did it in thirty seconds, saving us from some slightly annoying time-consuming minutes. The movie is powerful, which brought me nearly to tears (but hey: I cry at a ton of movies).
And so yes, this may be controversial, but I truly believe this movie went above and beyond this book. The only complaint I had was with the ending. The movie would have been next to perfect if it had used the ending the book has. In fact, the ending the movie had was somehwat dissapointing. This IS a different movie then most Stephen King books, but it shows that he does have a soft side...and when he shows it, he's great.
