Exquisite visual journey into one man's sexual subconscious

Twenty years from now "Eyes Wide Shut" will be just as alive, brilliant, unsettling and confounding as it was when it first released in 1999.
Because the mark of a great film is one from which newly-found appreciation and interpretation can be gleaned in subsequent viewings, "Eyes Wide Shut" is a great film that works on numerous complex psychological levels. Narrative structure is invisible. Music, dialogue and visual spectacle predominate and are symbolic of deeper meaning. The viewer enters the world of Stanley Kubrick, a world where reality as known to the filmgoing audience is non-existent -- non-existent even within the audience's own common understanding of suspension of disbelief in movies.
The Kubrick world is distant, cold, mechanical and disturbing. Kubrick's Manhattan (filmed in the UK) has a pace opposite to the New York most know or hear of -- Kubrick's Big Apple is very slow -- and disorienting to the audience, disorienting to the point of creating in the viewer the same feeling of alienation, unease and discomfort that Dr. Bill Harford (Tom Cruise) feels in his nocturnal adventures.
When Harford is unable to control his circumstances or grasp meaning in several bizarre events he witnesses, his psychological fiber is challenged. And so is the audience's. "Eyes Wide Shut" is a beautiful vision for adults. Sometimes it has the macabre feel of David Lynch's "Blue Velvet". Other times, the delusions and mysteries of David Fincher's "The Game" -- particularly that repetitive singular piano note.
But at all times the look, feel and haunting atmosphere of this film is Kubrick, Kubrick, Kubrick. One of the interesting aspects of "Eyes Wide Shut" is that its big-name actors (Cruise, and to a lesser extent Nicole Kidman) look so much unlike themselves from other films. From Cruise and Kidman's vacant expressions alone we seem to understand that in "Eyes Wide Shut" we are in an altogether different human universe.
Watching this film again and again on DVD where the elements that made it so powerfully great in the theater (the superb color, music and lighting -- are enhanced tenfold) is a great treat and a refreshing analytical exercise. "Eyes Wide Shut" is a colorful visual puzzle that provokes viewer thought and solution the more it is watched. In the strangest sense, it's the cinematic equivalent of the ol' Rubic's Cube. "Eyes Wide Shut" is Kubrick's Cube -- a spellbinding mystery with many questions, answers and dozens of ways to get to the end of its rainbow -- and you will be confused, disappointed, frustrated, enlightened, satisfied or thrilled with the conclusion (or solution) that you reach.

As a lover of Nelsons Navy, It's great. Hornblower is perfect, and the idea of building an actual replica of a frigate makes it better. The problem is that it cost 12 million to make. As a Brit its rare that films like that continue, especially as ITV (UK TV company) payed for most of it, and they are very tight on money!! Also if you read the books, they will require to built a proper man of war if they continue. Let's start funding them!!

Audrey, Bogey, Moon River...and...You!

This review refers to the Audrey Hepburn DVD Collection...

Can you think of anyone better to spend a weekend with than Audrey Hepburn? And with her, she brings some wonderful gifts. She brings, Gregory Peck, Humphrey Bogart, William Holden, George Peppard, Patricia Neal, 'The Mouth of Truth' (this is one of my all time favorite movies scenes), "La Vie En Rose", "Cat" and "Moon River"..sigh.

You don't need me to tell you, what a gift Audrey Hepburn was to the world, or how wonderful these films are. Pure Movie Heaven... "Roman Holiday"(1953), "Sabrina"(1954) and "Breakfast At Tiffany's"(1961) are three films with all those great cinematic moments, that once seen, will never be forgotten. They are directed to perfection by Hollywood legends, William Wyler, Billy Wilder and Blake Edwards. Audrey Hepburn will tug at your heartstrings, she'll make you smile, laugh and cry. The stories are very romantic, funny, dramatic, and poignant. The music is wonderful, and the locations charming.

Still haven't pushed that "buy now" link yet? Okay here's more..The DVDs are fabulous. I was especially impressed with the restoration of the Black and Whites. Sabrina and Roman Holiday look brand new. Crisp, sharp and clean. Breakfast At Tiffany's looks great in widescreen with excellent color and has the options of DD5.1 or stereo. It may also be viewed in French and has English subtitles for deaf and hearing impaired viewers, as does RH and Sabrina. Not much in the way of Special Features for Breakfast, but Roman Holiday and Sabrina have some great ones. RH includes an entertaining and informative documentary "Remembering RH" with quotes from the cast, a featurette on the restoration, an Edith Head featurette and a photo gallery. Sabrina, also includes a documentary and a photo gallery. Each disc is in their own keep case, with scene selection insert, and the price is right for these three classics, sure to be viewed over and over again.

Ride along with Audrey and Bogey as she serenades you with "La Vie En Rose"... as Sabrina's says... "It's the closest thing to heaven"...Laurie

A TRULY WONDERFUL MOVIE

This is a truly heart warming story of four sisters turning from children into "little women" durung the 1860s. It's as good if not better than the novel. They let you in in their joys and hardships. Winona Ryder is truly amazing as Jo, and seems to capture her character perfectly. It's a also a very good proformance by Christian Bale as Laurie, the boy next door. He makes it seem as though he really is Theodore Lawrence.

Forget the literary elitists...this is a wonderful movie

Bottom line... this is a wonderful movie that contains all of the elements of the great story laid down by Tolkien. Notwithstanding the pretentions of the literary snobs who take issue with "this or that" as compared to the book, if you sit back and take in this movie as it comes you will not be disappointed. It is simply a wonderful experience. The cinematography, acting and pace are first rate. This movie is truly a masterpiece and can be enjoyed by all in the family.

OH YEAH

Excellent work out. If you apply yourself you WILL sweat. I lift weights and tae-bo on a regular basis. Much more enjoyable than running. The moves are easy to master, it may take you quite a few runs at the instructional video but once you get past that, the basic and advanced workouts are excellent.

An Unsettling RING

A reworking of a highly popular Japanese film from 1998, THE RING is a disquieting and unsettling mix of psychological and supernatural horror elements with just a whif of Satanic imagery behind it. Avoiding the quick and easy way out via cheap shocks, director Gore Verbinski and screenwriter Ehren Kruger fashion one of the finest and most chilling horror films of recent times.
Naomi Watts stars as a Seattle newspaper reporter looking into the deaths of four of her closest friends, all of whom died after watching a videotape at an isolation mountain inn. She watches the tape for herself, and sees random, disconnected, and nightmarish images, bookended by a mysterious ring pattern. A phone call comes, filling her with dread as the mysterious caller intones "Seven days." As a result, she and her boyfriend (Martin Henderson) have to do some quick investigating before it's too late. The mystery leads to an isolated island in the Puget Sound, and a family with a very strange past.
In the tradition of THE SIXTH SENSE, THE RING offers mysterious and nightmarish images and no quick-fix solutions to the story's mysteries. Horror films that leave things up to the audiences's imaginations are far more effective and disturbing than those that just resort to cheap blood-and-gore shocks. There are some solid shocks, but none that are so explicit that the film's 'PG-13' rating is compromised in any way. But it is those racing cloud images, the Satanic looking tree at the top of the hill, and the ring image itself that stay within the mind long after the movie is over. Just on those counts, THE RING is one of the best films of 2002.
