Jane Austen's Emma - movie DVD cover picture
Excellent adaptation of Austen's work!

This movie is far superior to the one starring Gwyneth Paltrow. Kate Beckinsdale gives the part of Emma a greater depth of character than Ms. Paltrow does...and a great deal more fire and attitude - as Emma should have. Character development in this version is much better than in the Miramax version. Ms. Beckinsdale's Emma is much more lovable and understandable than Ms. Paltrow's. In the end, this makes the audience symphathetic to Emma - she deserves this. Remember, she is only a child, still finding her place in society.
The scene on Box Hill is played quite brilliantly in this version - Emma, you must remember, is very naive and is not really aware of what she is doing. You get a better sense of her blunder and of her remorse in this version than in the Miramax version, in which she seems to be nasty on purpose.
The casting (and acting) in this version is superb - Jane in the Miramax version is saucier than one would expect; her expressions were much harsher than author Jane Austen may have wanted.
A nice nod to the Pride and Prejudice version - the inclusion of Ms. Lucy Robinson (Mrs. Hurst in P&P) in Emma as Mrs. Elton was a great choice. She makes a wonderful, loud, brassy wife.
If you must insist on watching the Emma starring Gwyneth Paltrow, watch that version first, and then watch this version. Otherwise, you will be very disappointed.

Superb science fiction!

Contact captivates from the first moments and never lets go. It's one of my all-time favorites, that I view over and over again. It's poetic and spectacular--an awesome movie--and Jodie Foster is wonderful as the ever-searching Ellie Arroway. Matthew McConaughy is quite the hearthrob, too. (I love his gorgeous curls and dimples!) After watching this movie, I had to get Carl Sagan's book. Zemekis has captured the essence of the book but for those who hunger after more I highly recommend reading the book as there's so much more to the story and the science that couldn't be told in the movie, especially the trip through the wormhole (taken by several people, not just Ellie) and the sections about the number pi. Simply fascinating.

What a nice surprise..

I bought this movie on the recommendation of a friend and I'm really pleased that I bought it.
First of all, the plot is really unlike any other gay movie I've seen. It's not set in the city (NY, LA, SF etc) and has zero muscleboys in the cast, but it's one of the best-cast and acted movies in a long time.
A great date movie, for sure, but also an interesting view into what life could and will be like one day in the not-so-distant future when being gay is just another part of the cultural makeup of society.
The DVD has a lot of nice bonus material including information on the production, the beautiful location used for the film's setting, the actors and the evolution of the film from idea to celluloid.
I really can't recommend this movie enough - it's not earth-shattering by any stretch of the imagination, but it has rich, well-developed characters, a beautiful setting, and a lot of heart and soul.

The Madness of King George - movie DVD cover picture

as is said to king george, he has his ups and downs; so does this film. the film is a quiet, beautiful work of visual and verbal eloquence. while the actors all give marvelous performances, the film belongs to nigel hawthorne, mr. king.
king george, a kind and generous ruler, sadly descends into some sort of madness (alzheimer's?) while his son, the prince of wales, rather than being a sympathetic son, plots to become regent of england. machiavelli would have no doubt been proud to know this prince, but all the prince really ever wanted was to have something to do other than smile and wave at his subjects.
the king's temperament runs from nasty and vindictive to playfully and childishly charming. i wept when the king was torn from his castle and queen and forced into a terrible torture, which was in those days called medicine. a lifetime of worries and duty and the loss of the colonies push this kind soul towards madness.
the short scene in which the king and his contemporaries play a scene from 'king lear' is one of the most touching moments i have seen in any film. the parallels are obvious, even to the tormented mind of king george. it's wonderful.
ian holm is wonderful as the doctor who steps in with great understanding of the king's illness. while his methods seem barbaric by today's standards, they do help the king to regain his senses and triumph.
smile and wave? i cheered. this film gets my highest recommendation.

Doesn't Disappoint!

Let's start by saying there is too many great things about this show to list them all here besides if i mentioned all of them it would ruin some of the fantastic suprises that await you on this show or should i say short movies. I have seen alot of action television shows and the reason i enjoyed this more than anything else is that it gets you away for an hour much like some of the movies do at the theatre for two i feel almost as if i have watched a motion picture after one of these episodes. The acting is so much better than anything i have seen now i look at these other shows and can't help noticing the poor acting going on. The entire cast is perfect and jennifer garner should win every emmy award until the show ends with the acting she has done on this show UNBELIEVABE not to mention the fantastic acting by the rest of the cast WOW. give this show a beyond perfect score it deserves more than the maximum five stars allowed if you have not seen it this dvd is perfect each episode is presented in anamorphic widescreen ( those who have widescreen tv's will be in heavan) and fantastic 5.1 surround sound along with some fantastic special features including a great gag reel and a very cool look into season two. So i urge you who have not seen this show rent or better yet buy this season now you will be on the edge of your seat from the moment it starts. And if jennifer garner or the writers of alias are reading this i just have to say sydney needs to hook up with vaughn soon. five stars fantastic show.

Love Beat the Hell Outta Me - movie DVD cover picture

depending on where you are in life (mentally, emotionally, spiritually, etc.), you will either love or hate this film. well i LOVE it and am HIGHLY recommending it to all (and i have only seen it once - so far)! my personal Lord and Savior, Jesus - the Christ, has allowed me to be so greatly humbled that i can see and appreciate beauty almost anywhere, while others - standing and looking so high - miss it!...
if you have yet to have some of life's experiences and enrichments that will allow you to appreciate the beauty of this film, then you will miss the messages and loose the lessons. it is not often that a man will open his heart and reveal his innermost self (AND that women are allowed to see it!). this film does that, and very poetically! the words, the poetry, the prose in this film were deep, profound and thought-provoking. granted, i must concede that some things were 'ghetto-fabulous', but this particular aspect represents the other realm of the gamut to appeal to all at various levels. SO WOMEN, if you want to how a man emotes, how he thinks and WHAT he thinks, then this film is a must see! but then again, as i have said before, some people simply can not appreciate the finer things in life.

Bad Taste - movie DVD cover picture

BAD TASTE is a low-budget, home-made, horror/science-fiction film about aliens who come to Earth to kill humans and turn them into hamburger meat that they will sell back on their home planet. It's up to a group of crazy government assassins to stop the alien invasion and the extermination of all mankind. This movie has it all; flying guts, splattering brains, gushing blood, excellent alien make-up effects, and an exploding sheep!

A truly fun movie

I highly recommend this movie. It's funny and fun to watch. The quality of digital graphics is simply stunning and makes the movie worthwhile just for that; it really is superior to the Toy Story movies. Fortunately, it's not just a special effects wonder. The movie's story stands up on its own too.
It's about Shrek, who's a gruff on the outside but soft inside ogre played my Mike Meyers, who sets off on a quest to rid his swamp of all the fairy tale creatures that have been exiled there, and as his companion for his adventures he has a donkey, voiced by Eddie Murphy.
I would not exactly call this a kid's movie. It is rated PG and they will love it, but most of the humor is actually aimed at adults, and it hits the mark. I laughed all the way through it - something I haven't done at the movies in some time. There are a lot of clever physical gags (pretty much anything that's bodily and gross) centered around Shrek and then there's Murphy's character of the donkey. Murphy's performance here equals anything else he has done. If you are a fan of Eddie Murphy, you won't be disappointed with his character.
This movie is not just one long comedy though. Remember, this is a fairy tale, so there is a romance story going on as well, but it never takes itself too seriously, keeping the movie's light atmosphere from bogging down.
Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona and John Lithgow as the rotten Farquaad are simply superb. All the actors were well picked for their characters.
You won't regret going to see this show. In fact, you may consider going a second time. I know I am.
