Excellent Michelle fight scenes, and lots of them!

This movie has a fight scene every 15 minutes, it seems. Michelle is wonderful. The choreography is graceful and it's -- hey -- a chick flick. The story is fun, light, enjoyable. The characters are also fun, light and enjoyable.

The Passion of the Christ (Full Screen Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
Passiion of the Christ

I saw the Passion on opening weekend but had overdosed on researching reviews and "behind the scenes" commentaries. The first viewing I had to sit too close, was distracted by the audience and wasn't as affected by the movie experience as I had anticipated. Let me say I rarely enjoy repeated viewing of a film. However, I have now seen the Passion film 3 times and with each viewing I am amazed at nuances in dialog and expression I missed earlier. To fully appreciate the screenplay, symbolism, directing and set design one should do a chronological study/read of the 4 gospels in the New Testament prior to the movie. It will reveal the depth of the entire work of the Passion to you.
Oh, and forget the idea of antisemitism....every human that has lived on earth, both BC and AD has been fully culpable for the crucifixion in 33AD as well as daily, now. As implied in the film, His free gift of Compassionate, Merciful Grace is all we can trust by His death/life through the Resurrection depicted in the representative scene. I was a tad disappointed in the brievity of that scene symbolic of His overcoming states of matter and movement between our physical world and the spirit world.
This year's Gospel of John is another excellent and similar film but without the in depth of brutality shown in The Passion. However, the G of J is missing some of the more artistic expression given us in the Passion. See them both and judge for yourself!

The Fifth Element - movie DVD cover picture
One of the best Bruce Willis films I have ever seen

This movie was a bit of a surprise to me. When I saw it for the first time in the theater I wasn't expecting all that much, but man was I wrong! The movie is based on the idea that every few thousand years or so the ultimate evil awakens and tries to wipe out all life in the universe. The only defense against it is a weapon built by an ancient race and (coincidentally) stored on earth. The weapon is the Fifth Element. The other four basic elements are fire, water, earth and air. The Fifth Element also turns out to be not an object but a very beautiful girl. Chris Tucker also stars in this movie, and while others have reviewed his character as annoying, I must say it was very well done and funny! The whole movie has a look and feel almost of a sci-fi/music video. The sound track has an awesome feel to it, and the actors move well within it. Over all out of the hundreds of movies I have seen in my days, I would have to rank this one in the top ten. If you haven't seen it yet, be prepared to watch it again and again, because you won't want it to end.

Even better on re-viewing

After recently spending days viewing all currently available video Hamlets, I realize that this is definitely the best of the lot. Branagh's version is certainly valuable for the full text and is beautifully filmed, but that is part of the problem. The 19th century setting makes the instructions from Claudius to the King of England to kill Hamlet on his arrival ridiculous. This is a much too civilized court for the rottenness in Denmark. The Zeffirelli version sets Hamlet in a dark, primitive, medieval Denmark where all is possible. Branagh is a stage Hamlet, an actor playing a part, however well, while Gibson IS Hamlet for the two hour duration of the film. The blonde wig Branagh wears is also rather off-putting, as though he were dressing up as Laurence Olivier in his version. I also find the cameo parts in the Branagh version rather self-indulgent, particularly that of Robin Williams and Charlton Heston, or simply incompetent (Jack Lemmon). All the actors in Zeffirelli's version are living their roles, with their facial expressions changing moment to moment as the play unfolds. No ego trips here.

Movie making at it's best!!!

One of the best films from the early 60's with great performances and a great storyline! Natalie Wood is, again, SPECTACULAR and truly deserved the Oscar for this one! If you are a Wood fan you can't miss this one... ...and here is a little piece of trivia...a true Wood fan knows she never appeared without a bracelet or other cover up on her wrist because of a distended bone caused by an accident when she was a pre-teen...well, check out the bathtub scene very bracelets or coverups!!!

In the Bedroom - movie DVD cover picture

This flick was nominated for five Oscars in 2001 including best picture. Having just watched it, I'm surprised it didn't win. The subject is emotionally searing. Sissy Spacek and Tom Wilkinson play Matt and Ruth Fowler, whose staid lives are shattered by the murder of their young son Frank. Marisa Tomei is his girlfriend Natalie whose ex-husband kills Frank in a sudden, violent rage. The action escalates after Frank's funeral as the Fowlers try to resume lives which were once so safe and secure. Matt mows the yard and goes back to work too soon. Ruth resumes her teaching duties but home life revolves around drinking tea, watching too much tv, and chain smoking. Both are shell shocked and their grief almost consumes them. I won't reveal too much here, but the action now pivots on Natalie's trial testimony. This is a very well acted albeit disturbing film. Spacek, who earned a best actress Oscar for Coal Miner's Daughter, proves again why she belongs in acting's upper echelon with Meryl Streep. Tomei is great and Wilkinson gives a fine, nuanced performance. There are far reaching consequences with any murder - this film explores them all.
