This cartoon marked my childhood - for the better!

I would have loved to have been in on the production meeting that resulted in this film.
"Hey, how about a movie where Donald Duck chases after live-action women?"
"Hmm... kind of flimsy premise."
"Okay, we'll disguise it as a Latin American travelogue."
As goofy as it sounds, the result is one of my favorite Disney films. Donald, along with his buddies Jose and Panchito, travel to Brazil and Mexico, take in a couple of cartoons and perform one of the greatest musical numbers in Disney's long history of Disney musical numbers.
This DVD also includes two shorts that I can only assume were selected for their links -- tenuous they may be -- to Latin American culture. In "Don's Fountain of Youth," Donald tricks his nephews into thinking he's fallen victim to the famous fountain sought by Ponce de Leon -- one of my favorite Donald shorts. "Pueblo Pluto" is just okay, but it's still nice to have a sampling of cartoons on the DVD.

Script, timing and superb acting

What can be said? In the eleven years since this film was made, no other comedy has reached its heights. Wonderful comic timing, excellent dialogue, good actors, witty script, and the right amount of Pythonesque craziness and non-PC-ness when it comes to stutterers, little old ladies and their dogs, and other delicate subjects.

God bless Martina

I am especially excited about this new DVD of Martina McBride's because it includes the video for "Concrete Angel," a superb song that was not included in the "Greatest Hits" DVD. It was this song that made me a fan, and I am looking forward to hearing more of Martina's stuff. She has a beautiful voice and a lot of class; she is not afraid to sing about things like faith, hope, and prayer, and she will go far with that.
This DVD is available at a great price and for a singer with this much talent, it is well worth every penny. This is well worth buying for "Concrete Angel" alone; a heartbreaking song with a message that speaks volumes, this is a showcase of Martina McBride's great talent and courage.

True to the Song

Burl Ives, as Sam the Snowman, narrates this story of the lovable, yet North Pole outcast, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Who has ever heard of a red-nosed reindeer, you say? No one, until now. Rudolph is the only reindeer with such a nose, which is a problem, considering he can't join in any of the reindeer games, and is shunned by everyone in Christmastown. But when he meets Hermey, and outcast elf, and Yukon Cornelius, they escape from Christmastown, and the ridicule, and, while trying to avoid the Bumble (the Abominable Snow Monster), the three friends come across the Island of Misfit Toys, where they meet many toys who are looking for a person to love them. But one year, when Christmas has been officially cancelled, and Santa Claus can't find a way to guide his sleigh through the blizzard, Rudolph returns to Christmastown, where Santa Claus calls upon him to guide his sleigh, and where he becomes a world-renown hero.
For everyone who has sung the song, the official story, and movie, is here. Fans young and old will relish in the exact similarities between the song and the movie; and the sweet relationship that Rudolph develops with his friends Hermey the Elf, Yukon Corenlius, and even the Bumble. Not to mention the little romance he develops with a beautiful little doe. This movie isn't all fun and games. It also holds a message: being different makes you special. A perfect movie for everyone this holiday season. Don't miss this one.

Supporting Military Cast Are Not Actors in This Film

One thing overlooked in other reviews, which I am in agreement with over the quality of this film, is that the military people in this film are actually the people serving in the hosting Airforce Unit in Germany at the time. When I first saw it on late night television, I noticed the very real radio chatter that went on in the aircraft and most of all Clift's commanding officer, who had such an un-hollywood demeanor that I wondered where they got this guy and/or who was the genius directing this that created this take on this character. Then when the credits came, I saw that he was the serving commanding officer of the Airforce outfit: he was just being himself (and his "performance" will surprise many who only know the "cartoon version" of military people). And he's not the only one: they show all the "actors" one at a time in formation at the end (the military folks). Good stuff (and as a former military man myself, I found it very refreshing to see this sort of non-cartoonish depiction of military characters in this film). This film is a great product of it's time, the era which gave us "Third Man" and a few other of the great "Cold War" Noir films (some day "Night People" with Gregory Peck and Buddy Ebsen will come out on Dvd, too!).
You can't go wrong.

Who Would've Known?

What is it about this woman that can elicit such effusive, such overwhelming praise from those who worship her? In short, everything she does is magic. Red licorice swirling spiral-like from her breasts; a frantic, mesmerizing black-and-white jig atop a semi through the streets of New York: each of her video moments captures something beautiful, something odd, something interesting, something memorable. Each of her moments on film effuses an absolute magic matched only by the magic of her voice. She takes the two into her palms, makes them one, makes them grow from the strengths of one other. Her presence on video is worth seeing if nothing else than for the sheer magic her face.

Vigilante Saints

Vigilante killers sweep the dregs of Boston, targetting all manner of bad guys: mobsters, killers, and drug dealers alike. Taking the proverb, "An eye for an eye," to the extreme end, this film raises question to one's belief system through controversial situations it presents. "The Boondock Saints" is a must-see film.
