One of better recent mysteries

The Spanish Prisoner is in a league of its own. Not only is it one of the better mysteries of the decade, but it also achieves such without violence, sex, or profanity. Not that I'm against those mind you, as long as they are there to benefit the plot, and not just for show. What I mean to say rather, that it is astonishing to watch such an absorbing film, and then by the end of it all realize that it did it without traits mentioned above. Much like the Usual Suspects, this film plays with your mind. You are taken on a rollercoaster. Who can you trust? The acting is dead on perfect. Campell Scott is good as the unexciting man in the middle of it all. And believe it or not Steve Martin is perfect in his role. So if you're looking for a good brainteaser, I reccomend this one. Also, look for a cameo by Ed O'Neil, better known as TV's Al Bundy.

Punch-Drunk Love (Two Disc Special Edition) (Superbit Collection) - movie DVD cover picture
ARE YOU THREATENING ME?

PUNCH DRUNK LOVE is a great love story. It is simply about a lonely man, Barry Egan. He is a good person. He is a nice man. He is loyal. He minds his own business. He owns his own business. But he's lonely. He's always been lonely. It's a curse that has followed him through his entire life, but finally gets what he deserves. He finds a love in his life, what may be the love of his life. This movie is bizarre and comes from out of nowhere. As you may have heard in the commercial, the movie is on the edge. It's a great story that has come out at exactly the right time. Teaming two of the greatest names in Hollywood, great writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson, and great actor, Adam Sandler, in a fine role, due to the fact that expands his audience's expectations of him. To me, while Sandler does an amazing job as a comedian (him being one of my favorite actors) I have felt that he has always been bound in his work to many similar movies: BILLY MADISON, HAPPY GILMORE, WATERBOY, ANGER MANAGEMENT, etc. So I think this is audience's chances to see the side of Adam Sandler that few pay attention to. Combine this with a killer story, and the skills of one of the greatest storytellers of our time, Paul Thomas Anderson, not to mention adding great supporting actors, such as Emily Watson, Luis Guzman, etc. and you have what could possibly one of the greatest movies of our time. The only problem is that this movie didn't exactly get a lot of publicity when it was released, although it did get some, and it only played in select cities (although I saw it in theatres, and bought it on DVD) many people who would enjoy this movie have been deprived of seeing it, or even hearing about it. So if you hear about this movie, and you decide to go to amazon.com to check it out, and come across this review, which I doubt, take it from me (but you don't have to) this movie is great. You'll probably enjoy it. Plus, if your a fan of Adam Sandler, Paul Thomas Anderson, Emily Watson, Luis Guzman, or anyone involved in this film, you'll probably like this movie. I'm not forcing you to watch the movie, but I strongly suggest that you check it out. And if Adam Sandler comes across this review, which I doubt, "congratulations on your marriage-I'm a huge fan of your movies". Now remember, Adam Sandler probably won't read this review. Just in case.

This movie is for YOU also!

Warner Bros. did a grave disservice in how they promoted this film when it first came out. I remember seeing a theater preview that managed to completely botch what this movie is about, and thought, "Well, that's one to miss." Then I picked it up on a two-fer DVD rental night and, realizing what I'd missed, immediately bought my own copy.
Put simply, this is one of the best animated movies you will ever see. It is plainly a labor of love: every detail, every nuance, every little bit of this movie was crafted with passionate care and attention. Children of all ages will love it, but they won't be alone; I can't think of another feature-length animation that a thinking adult could enjoy as much as this, and it holds up to repeated viewing. It is that much-overused word, a masterpiece.
The story, adapted from the children's book by Ted Hughes (yes, _that_ Ted Hughes), is moved to America in 1957, just after the launch of the first Sputnik. The time and place are conveyed with stunning but understated precision. In fact, there is a exacting discipline never found in the loud overkill of recent Disney productions with their mechanistic, plastic musical numbers. (The score is lush and beautiful -- the composer and Czech orchestra deserve recognition on their own right.) If anything, the darker elements hearken back to the heyday of Disney movies, such as Snow White and Pinnochio.
One element not much remarked on, despite his importance, is the character of Hogarth. How long has it been since you've seen a depiction of a young boy who can serve as a positive, courageous role model without being unrealistically smart or smug? What a refreshing change to see a character that age have fun _and_ be responsible enough to grapple with big issues.
All the secondary elements of this movie help the main theme (You are who you choose to be), but do so without preaching. Any emotions you feel at the end (and you'd have to be made of stone not to feel some) will be real.
Despite the ending, I hope there is no sequel. This is a special movie, the kind you treasure because it is unique.

I JUST FINISHED VIEWING THIS DVD. SEVERAL THINGS COME TO MIND. FIRST, OVER HALF OF THE CAMERA SHOTS ,IN THIS DVD , START AS "OUT OF FOCUS" THEN FADE INTO FOCUS SLIGHTLY. THE CAMERAS JUMP AROUND AS IF THE EDITOR HAD JUST DRANK ABOUT 50 CUPS OF COFFEE BEFOR ENTERING THE EDIT ROOM.I DON'T THINK THERE IS 1 CAMERA SHOT THATS STAYS ON THE SUBJECT FOR MORE THAN 5 SECONDS. VERY HARD TO WATCH. SECONDLY, THERE ARE A LOT OF FILL SHOTS. EVERYTHING FROM THE BASS PLAYERS BOOTS TO THE BACKS OF PEOPLE OUT OF FOCUS AND TOTALLY OUT OF FOCUS SHOTS OF WHAT I DON'T KNOW. I'M SURPRISED TOM PETTY SIGNED OFF ON THIS PROJECT AS BAD AS IT IS.TOM AND THE BAND PLAYED THEIR COLLECTIVE BUTTS OFF ONLY TO BE RUINED BY BAD, BAD, EDITING!

"Now & Then..." Blew Me Away

Now and Then, Here and There is grim, brutal, powerful and beautiful all at once. From what I understand it's loosely based on a documentary about child soldiers in Africa that the director saw, the violence in this series isn't disturbing because of it's gorey nature as in more typical anime, but in that the acts of violence ring with a disturbing note of truth and reality. Despite this however, the protagonist Shu, is so noble and optimistic that there's always a glimmer of hope through all the darkness, and you never hit rock bottom while watching. Some people may not be able to stomach it, but if you're not sqeamish it's a very rewarding series.

we are transmitting to you...

Yes! This gave nightmares for months after seeing it the first time. May not be THE John Carpenter movie to beat (That would be The Thing)but is up there with Escape From NY and Dark Star! Being familiar with the British serial character Alan Quartermass (sort of a WWII precursor to Dr.Who)helps, as it was based on one the series' stories (again Carpenter throwing the referrence to us in the credits, creidting Alan Quartermass with the screenplay). Many good features, stalwart Donald Pleasance, looking doughy and confused, BD Wong flirting with everybody (and failing miserably)-and my personal fave-Thom Bray as expendable scientist #1! That's right, the Boz from "Riptide" gets attacked by posessed bums led by...Alice Cooper! What are ya waiting for?!
