The Best!

Although I'm still very resentful towards Dimension for releasing so many quality martial arts films without the Chinese language tracks available, this remains the king of martial arts movies. It's a remake of Bruce Lee's "Chinese Connection/Fist of Fury", and its actually better. Jet Li's character Chen Zhen is a devout gunfu student during China's tumultuous Qing Dynasty/Republic era. His teacher dies during a challenge match at the hands of the Imperial Japanese ultra-nationalists, and Chen is out to restore the name of the Jingwu School. Fist of Legend has the best fighting, with little "string-fu" and Chen Zhen's character utilizes everything he learns from other opponents to form a more complete, convincing fighter. An excellent film!

"F" Scream and the new stuff

This is Fulci's most unpleasant film, but not all for the right reasons. To be sure, the violence featured is revolting, especially the death of the final victim by close-up razor slicing. We also get a broken bottle rammed into a naked womans crotch, and many other sleazy scenes. However, the film is very ugly to look at, with nearly all scenes being set in dull streets, apartments and offices, with lots of tiresome dialogue as the main character, a police detective, tries to find the murderer. Apart from the grisly murders and one strange hallucination sequence (also with violence!) set in a cinema, there isn't much to hold the interest visually, none of the characters are interesting, and the story is laughable, especially the explanation of the killer's "Donald Duck" voice...don't hold your breath. Watch Fulci's gothic horrors like "House By The Cemetary" and "The Beyond" instead.

Sir Attenborough is very good but

the camera work is phenomenal and is generally edited very well -- in the behind the scenes extra you see how much inactivity the crew had to sit through to get the final footage.
David Attenborough is his usual self, soft spoken and easy to understand while being informative.
the series as noted deals with different segments of the ocean from the beginning Ocean World (a general overview) to the Coasts (as he saids, the most dynamic) and i suspect if you have even a remote interest in marine life there is something in this series for you.
my favorite is disk two with Open Ocean and The Deep; not coincidently, i find these two to be have the best cinematography. the images of marlins and tunas exploding through a huge tightly packed school is remarkable until hear Attenborough announces 'they have attracted a giant' and a whale materializes out of the blue depths.
this entire series is shot in enhanced resolution so most of the footage is very sharp -- but none more so than in The Deep (with the black background and the lack of suspended particles); it seems unreal in clarity. deep water footage is harder to get due to the specialized equiptment necessary to withstand the immense pressure so i shouldn't have been surprised to see something completely new... Attenborough takes you to what looks to be underwater lake -- it's water of the highest salinity and is denser than surrounding waters so it kind of collects like a lake -- this is described in greater detail in one of the behind the scenes features. just astonishing.
i've watched this series several times and really enjoyed each time; with the exception of Ken Burn's Civil War, i have never been so impressed a documentary series.

Star what?

The Matrix is undoubtedly one of the most innovative and enjoyable movies of this decade. With its out-of-this-world special effects and amazing sets and of course the splendid cast, the movie is easily enrolled into the sci-fi hall of fame with classics like Blade Runner and Terminator. The Matrix will be a model for future sci-fi flicks.

I only have three words: Oh My God....

This is the funniest thing I've ever seen in my entire life! It's not every anime that causes you to go into a fit of laughter suring the first five minutes. I don't want to give anything away, so I'll say that Scary Movie, Austin Powers, and Animal House COMBINED don't have the insanity factor required to match the hilarity that is Excel Saga! HAIL ILPALLAZO!!!!

Bela Lugosi Meets a Brooklyn Gorilla - movie DVD cover picture
More Fun Than A Barrelful Of Monkeys!

Take Count Dracula, throw in a fake Martin and Lewis (Duke Mitchell and Sammy Petrillo), add a Dorothy Lamour wannabe (Muriel Landers), and you have the perfect ingredients for "Bela Lugosi Meets A Brooklyn Gorilla." Dean and Jerry - I mean Duke and Sammy - are on their way to perform for the soldiers stationed in Guam, when they open the wrong door and fall out of the plane. Luckily for them, they're wearing parachutes and just happen to land safely on an inhabited island. The natives are led by a chief who speaks English and has two daughters, one beautiful and one extra large. The plump honey goes ape over Sammy, while Muriel falls for Duke. Bela Lugosi is a scientist who has a castle on the island and is conducting experiments on evolution. (That makes perfect sense to me!) Muriel is his assistant and the dirty old man is smitten with her, but she only has eyes for Duke. Bela has perfected a serum which reverses the evolutionary process. To get his revenge and win Muriel's hand, he injects Duke with the serum and turns him into a gorilla! Sorry to say for him, but Muriel prefers a Brooklyn gorilla to a Hungarian mad scientist. Ramona, Bela's prize chimp, also takes a liking to Sammy. If the plot sounds like there's too much monkey business going on, just relax and laugh along with the insanity! Duke Mitchell and Sammy Petrillo never made another movie together, to the best of my knowledge. After this classic flick, Bela Lugosi was primed and ready to make a career comeback, starring in Ed Wood films.

Classic Cagney Performance

A STAR-making vehicle if there ever was one. The sexual overtones in this movie have always been overlooked. Critics always mention the "grapefruit scene" and always remark that it's because the Tom Powers character has gotten bored with Kitty, which is and isn't the case. "Public Enemy" is the story of a young man trying to get laid and his sexual frustration turning into violence When Tom and Matt meet the two girls at the speak-easy, sex is obviously on the boys minds. However Matt gets the girl who's sexually active, inevidence when Tom answers the phone hears giggling and cooing coming from the next room. Tom's girl is perfectly happy "playing house" which causes the "grapefruit scene". Tom ditchs Kitty for Gwen but he doesn't get any further there either. "How long can a guy hold out" he says. Later when the boys have to go into hiding, he finally gets some. But, it's to a woman he doesn't find attractive and he's too drunk to remember. This causes him to leave the apartment and leads to the death of his best friend.Later, in standard Cagney fashion, Tom goes down in a blaze of glory. There's many layers to this movie. Start diggin'.

Time Capsule Morse

If there was any program that got the closest to reflecting correctly life in Britain during the 80s and 90s, it was Inspector Morse.
While "Masonic Mysteries" and "Last Seen Wearing" are probably the best of the mysteries, "Cherubim and Seraphim" is the one that captures the British 80s/90s Zeitgeist best. The direction of this program is as good as any well-done British thriller.
It was end of an era. Now you'll understand Peter Hitchens.

V The Classic 80's Series

When this title became avaliable in Dvd format I thanked the studios to make posible, without doubt this masterpiece is one of the best 80's shows in TV.I was a boy when the show arrived in Spain and it became a superb sucess the first time that the Tv's played. It was followed by a sequel The Final Battle which I think that also must be released in Dvd but not the tv series whom have lack of imagination and where a mere tv weekly show without the charm of the original. I wonder this release is the first of many more 80 tv hits such The A Team,Knight Rider,Miami Vice and many more which I think also must be released in Dvd format to bring a new excitement in tv series.
