Every American MUST See This Film!

Every Democrat, every Independent, and every Republican in this country should see this film. The depth of Michael Moore's love for this great country and his fellow average Americans is clearly evident in Fahrenheit 9/11. Far too many of the policies being adopted by our "elected" government officials are created behind closed doors in secret - and contrary to what the majority of Americans want. This film gives the average American access to more actual information - rather than the filtered news, empty sound-bytes and catch phrases that are repeated ad nauseum. With so many multi-millionaires in his cabinet, is it any wonder President Bush is out of touch with the "common man"? Michael Moore does a masterful job of exposing the lies and inspiring Americans to get off their butts and exercise their privilege to vote with a better grasp of what's going on today in our country.

#3 is like...

You know what #3 is like? It's like one of those lame and chessy TV reunion special. You know, those that they did for Brady Bunch, etc. It was not a total disaster, but close... The first two, what can I say? Classic and more classic!
The DVD set was great, and my Toshiba player does play the bonus disc with no problem at all.

Ignore the Box

The box cover is a bit of a spoiler. This is unfortunate, because the first time you see this film, the ending is a real shocker. Don't ask anyone what I mean; watch it without knowing the ending, and let yourself take the wild roller coaster drop when you see it.
The casting is unusual and brilliant. Kim Hunter, best known for winning the supporting actress Oscar for A Streetcar Named Desire, plays Zira, a chimpanzee who is a psychologist studying human behavior. Former child star Roddy McDowell plays her husband, Cornelius. Charleton Heston is Taylor, a talking human who shakes up the ape society's view of itself as the species created in the image of god.
The set design and costumes hint of "B" IAP movies, but this is not a B-film. It is a brilliant, heavy-handed, yet not didactic commentary on human society; it is as true now as it was when it was first released upon the Vietnam-era United States.
Though there are sly backhands at the government that got us into Vietnam, and created the "generation gap," the larger commentary on race relations and the treatment of non-human animals is staggering.
The ape make-up is pure art, and the film is watchable just for the human actors bringing the ape faces to life. But it's watchable for much more than thrills; watch it for its message: because of the ape allegory, the film makes many statements that couldn't be made directly.
On top of it all, this is plain fun, science fiction, and a fantastic action film.
Rated G when you could say "damn" in a G film, this film is something that children will love-- though there's so much in it, and adult won't pick it all up without repeated viewings.
This is a buyable film; you'll want to watch it again and again.

Solving a Mystery that has No Clues!!

(Note: this review is exclusively for the Miss Marple mystery "Nemesis" on VHS)

I watched this movie without reading the 1971 Dame Agatha Christie novel that it was based on. (Christie wrote twelve full-length Miss Marple murder mysteries.) I'm glad I did this! Why? Because it forced me to really watch this movie in order to try and deduce who the murderer was.

The movie begins with millionaire Jason Rafiel (Frank Gatliff) dying of natural causes. Soon after his death, Miss Marple (the late Joan Hickson) receives a letter written by the now dead Rafiel (who was her friend) asking her to do some investigation. Miss Marple questions and comments after reading this letter:

"What kind of crime, if it was a crime, was it? When [was it] committed - where - anything? I'm most bewildered. It's like being asked to do a crossword puzzle without any clues!"

Miss Marple eventually, with the aid of her godson Lionel (Peter Tilbury) begins slowly collecting information, the most interesting being the mysterious death of two young girls named Verity Hunt and Nora Brent. However, Miss Marple is not sure of herself in her investigation and admits the following:

"Mr. Rafiel is a ghostly puppet master...laughing at [me] from beyond the grave."

Eventually a murder and suicide occur.

Who are the people associated with this intriguing mystery? They are as follows:

(1) Michael Rafiel, Jason's son (Bruce Payne)
(2) Mr. Broadribb, Jason's lawyer (Roger Hammond)
(3) Mr. Shuster, another of Jason's lawyers (Pat Godfrey)
(4) Miss Temple, retired school head mistress (Helen Cherry)
(5) Professor (of criminal psychology) Waustead (John Horsley)
(6) Miss Cooke, bodyguard (Jane Booker)
(7) Miss Barrow, bodyguard (Alison Skilbeck)
(8) Clothilde Bradbury-Scott, the past guardian of Verity Hunt (Margaret Tyzack)
(9) Anthea, Clothilde's sister and another guardian of Verity (Anna Chopper)
(10) Lavina, a married sister of Clothilde (Valerie Lush)
(11) Mrs. Brent, mother of Nora (Liz Fraser)
(12) Archdeacon Brabazon (Peter Copley)

Joan Hickson (whom Agatha Christie herself wanted to play Miss Marple) captures the essence of the heroine super sleuth in her performance. (Hickson was 81 years old in this movie!). Other fine performances to look for are Bruce Payne as Rafiel's son and Margaret Tyzack as Clothilde.

The character Jason Rafiel also appears in the Miss Marple murder mystery "A Caribbean Mystery" (1965).

Finally, the cinematography of this movie is well done. All costumes and props are authentic looking. The background music adds to each scene.

In conclusion, this is a fun and intriguing movie even if you have read the novel it's based on!!

(1987; 100 min; made for TV; British drama; full screen; color)

Anne Of Green Gables - The Sequel - movie DVD cover picture
Gilbert and Anne make the perfect couple.

I found myself sobbing last night while watching Anne of Avonlea (directly after Anne of Green Gables, of course!) again after quite a long time. My heart broke alongside Gilbert's as Anne refused his marriage proposal after so many years of being in love with her. And then the surprise reunion later in Kolinsport when he gently tells her that he's going to marry someone else, then gives a genuinely sentimental note of congratulations to his 'carrots', and you can see the pain in his eyes of still being in love with her, which brings tears to her eyes (as well as mine!). And then having them finally end up together at the end--the sparkle he tried to force himself to extinguish in his eyes from adoring her returned. I know I have Jonathon Crombie to thank for such a vulnerable, heart-tugging performance and Megan Follows' portrayal of an overwhelmingly imaginative 'kindred spirit' who could make the most handsome man in Avonlea fall so desperately and deeply in love with her (I guess I'm as much of a romantic as Anne). The only fault of the film is in not giving enough screen time to the two soul-mates (especially at the very end) That and perhaps being a wee-bit trite with some of the lines. I regret not having the opportunity to see Jonathon Crombie in any of his other performances, although I'm certain the Anne mini-series is his most heartfelt and best (as far as I'm concerened, it's Megan Follows's best!)
I was absolutely delighted to learn of the continuation soon to be released! I was always slightly dissapointed that we never got to see Anne and Gilbert's wedding, not to mention their future life together! I think it's fascinating that the original actors have reunited after more than a decade to produce more glorious, heartfelt performances in a story they clearly cherished. What a reunion it will be! I can't wait!!

Tenchi the Movie 2 - The Daughter of Darkness - movie DVD cover picture
The best Tenchi Muyo Movie!

I liked this movie even better than the first Tenchi movie! I think that it is funnier and is more dramatic. I thought it was a good story line that Tenchi's "daughter of darkness" Mayuka was created from the Demon Yuzuha's and Tenchi's hair. It's kinda sad too. I strongly reccomend this title to people 13 and older for a scene of complete nudity, breif language and a scene of sex. (Even thought pioneer ranked it with the 16 and up crowd. I find that an inappropriate rating!)
