Dark and Delightful

A cracker of a film from the start. Carpenter builds the atmosphere in a way that seems unique to his own personal style. Using actors which are unknown and therefore not stigmatised by expectancy from past performances works, and serves to enhance viewer empathy with the characters. The plot is simple enough, the Precinct in question is a Police Station which is being closed down, the people within it are a few staff and prisoners, awaiting final closure for transfer, and the assaultees are a gang of callous youths, down on the system, and up on the chance to show it.It's the coldness and calculated methodology behind the building attack which makes the film so dark. What's more, it's believable, which only adds to the effect. The musical accompaniment too, parallels this, giving the impression of impending attack, and then respite, albeit a brief one. As films go, especially considering the budget, this is as good as you'll see in a long time.

Worth it for the performances

This is a run of the mill english crime drama.
So why did I rate it five stars? Well this is one of those movies which you do not watch for the plot - you watch it for the performances of the entire cast.
The stand out performance is Ben Kingsley as the nightmare of a gangster who comes to visit and refuses to leave. But the movie would not work without Ray Winstone who turns Gal the retired Gangster into a sympathetic character, a man who has found his own paradise and will do anything to defend it.
And watch Ian McShanes scene stealing performance as gangster boss Teddy "Mr Black Magic" Bass.

Batman Begins (Widescreen Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
The bat is back!!!!

When Batman & Robin hit theatres in June of 1997, it single handedly buried the Batman franchise. The characters, writing, directing, acting, and plot were so bad, that fans went into shock. With Batman Begins, director Christopher Nolan has gone back to basics, jettisoning both the silliness of the TV incarnation and the gothic and fetishist elements of the '90s version. This is a hard-core, down-and-gritty origin story - the tale of, as one might reasonably expect, how Batman begins. It isn't intended as a "prequel" to the 1989 film, not only is Gotham City a completely different place, but key events of the Batman chronology are re-spun. Batman Begins is designed as the start of a new life, a reboot for the franchise. In the process, Nolan has not only crafted the best Batman movie, but arguably the second-best motion picture superhero narrative. Through every inch this film shows how Batman got his cool gadgets and his fighting style. Can't wait till this goes on DVD.

I watch this movie when I need a good cry...

I think Tim Hutton's Conrad is his best performance to date; Judd Hirsch, exceptional as Dr. Berger; and Donald Sutherland's Calvin is the father we all wish we had. This movie packs solid emotion and real meaning. It's my one true favorite movie...a must see.

This is getting better and better

After the first movie, it went really down the slope for the Hellraiser-movies. Pinhead is one of the biggest badguys, but that is not enough when the movies are way out of line. When the movies are made to show only blood and action, and no real story, it doesn't please me much. I'm glad that stopped with Bloodline. When I first saw Inferno, I couldn't belive it. It was a deep movie, and you didn't see almost anything of Pinhead. And it just got better in Hellseeker. I was looking foreward to see the goodgirl from the original Hellraiser and Hellbound in the Hellraiser-legacy again, but she was just acting in the beginning and the end...maybe 5-10 minutes, and surprisingly, I didn't care. Bouth Inferno and Hellseeker has a good, deep, Seven-alike and very differnt story than at least Hellbound, Hellraiser III and Bloodline. More of that. I don't say that I love blood and goore, but the film has to have a story too. I loved the part in Hellseeker when they open the scull and put pins in the mainpersons brain...mmm. To sum up what I've said here, I would say that this is a movie for persons who like a good stoy, a suprising ending and some blood and gore

Look All Around You

This 1966 black comedy, directed by the prominent screenwriter George Axelrod, was way ahead of its time. He satirizes American teenage culture, new concepts in modern day education, psychoanalysis and just about anything in society that requires scrutiny. There's a terrific score composed by Neal Hefti. Neal Hefti was in such demand for his unique style of comic scoring during the 60s and then he was gone. This film is like a trip back in time. They were modern times but people still used to take the time and look at something new or different. I think that's what so great about this movie. Roddy McDowall and Tuesday Weld as they were will remain eternal on this film.

Another Great Season of Hercules!

A great season of Hercules. I agree with another reviewer that the Golden Hind episodes are well worth watching.
I looked around to see what I could find out about this DVD set. Anchor Bay Entertainment does a nice job on their website of describing their products. Here is what they had to say. According to Anchor Bay's website, the special features include:? Audio and Video Commentary From Kevin Sorbo & Michael Hurst ? Hercules Chronicles and Mythology ? Direct Access Scenes ? Freddy never looked better.

I've had the Nightmare Collection since it was released back in September. All I can say is that the collection is the crown jewel of my DVD stock. The movies look so great, that they feel like all new films. I watched the old VHS transfers and they don't compare. The DVDs are crisp and clear while the VHS tapes are faded and just plain ugly. Sound Quality is outstanding. Plus, the films are presented in their 1.85:1 aspect ratio...the widescreen expeirence from the movie theatre. If you've had second thoughts, don't...this is a must....if you don't have a DVD player...hey...better get one...just don't miss out on these films. Freddy's been brought back to life, and he's never looked, or sounded, better. abe

How Teen Shows Should Be Done

The first season of "Degrassi Junior High" often came very close to feeling like public access, with a miniscule (at best) budget and often very wooden/weird acting. It is truly a guilty pleasure. However, the show *did* portray everyday tween/teenager problems in a realistic, if sometimes heavy-handed, way. And tho the viewer feels like they're watching something from a movie that "Mystery Science Theater 3000" would be lampooning at times, the messages of "Degrassi Junior High" resonate much, much more than nearly any other high school-set series ("Feaks and Geeks" is at the top of that list).

From a technical standpoint, Season Two is a big improvement. New topics that are tackled include depression, divorce/remarriage, and sex. The teen actors clearly developed their talents and come off more believable as they did in Season 1. The camerawork and direction have also improved. From a guilty pleasure standpoint, you STILL will love watching these episodes with dated music, clothes, and hairstyles a plenty. The DVD set comes with teaching supplements that would be helpful for any jr.high/hs teachers that are thinking of showing episodes in class. I give this series an A+ for having its heart in the right place and not talking down to its audience. Other features include the "Degressi Talks...on Depression" special, which is actually quite moving.

Like the first season collection, you can't go wrong with this DVD. You'll appreciate its honest portrayal of 12-15 year olds, but find much to laugh at in terms of the production values and overall 80s nostalgia. Glad Season 3 is just around the corner!
